It took more than an hour of furious chopping, beating and pounding by these men to break the grip that frightening monster had locked upon their boat. When it finally decided to release its grip and drop back into the sea, the men said that there was not a square inch of its head and shoulders that was not squirting blood. The sea around the boat was thoroughly mIxed with the mammel's blood as it sank below the surface. The four men who had been at tacked by that awesome creature were, John Byrne, Martin Byrne, Michael Emberly, and Martin How lett. When the men returned to their home port later that day with their battle scarred boat, their de scription of the frightening creature was unanimous. They all agreed, that the anirnal or mammel had the head and shoulders of a huge horse and even had a short mane at the back of its neck. It had large black angry looking eyes and itschizzel sharp fangs seemed to be more than an inch long.
