Muslims first contacted Koreans thirteen hundred years ago in China and then arrived in Korea at the end of the Shilla Dynasty. Throughout a few hundred years of history, Muslims greatly influenced Korean society in such arenas as politics, culture, economics, and even religion. However, ironically, their da'wa movements were not successful because they joined with the colonizing powers of the Yuan dynasty and later the Japanese. Muslims oppressed the Korean people in order to maintain their economic and political power. In this sense, the religion of Islam was not presented as favorable for the Koreans. By the second half of the twentieth century, however, the negative image of Islam began to soften in Korean society as Muslims spontaneously participated in the Korean War as allies and through their active involvement in the rehabilitation of war- devastated Korean society. Through these efforts, Islam has now become a more positive religion to Koreans and has grown. Moreover, foreign and Korean Muslims have developed da'wa methods in order to make Islam a popular religion in Korea. As a result, the rehgion of Islam has become a revival religion in Korea in the twenty-first century. While Korean Christian churches have declined since 1995, the Muslim population in Korea has increased constantly. Particularly in the last decade, numerous Koreans have become interested in and are transferring their religious identities to Islam. My research explores the reasons for these conversions, identifies the characteristics of Korean Muslim converts, and suggests missiological responses for the Korean Church toward the Islamic da'wa movements taking place in Korea. This dissertation is comprised of six chapters. Chapter one introduces the background of this study, the research problem, the assumptions for the research, and methodologies used. Chapter two explores the missionary world of Muslims within etymological, theological, and historical approaches to the missiological term da 'wa. In this chapter, a hypothesis that Islam is a missionary religion is proven. Chapter three chronologically researches the history of Korean Islamic movements. In chapters four and five, I use data analysis comparing the results of antecedent research and identifying the uniqueness of this study. This research shows that Islam is a revivalistic religion in Korea today. In particular, the rate of Korean Christians' conversion to Islam is greater than to other religions, such as Buddhism and Confucianism. These Korean Muslim converts are well- educated and middle class members of Korean society. Their previous religious traditions did not satisfy their spiritual and intellectual thirsts, whereas they found that Korean Muslim communities responded appropriately to their religious needs. Moreover, the converts interviewed in this study reported that their main reason for conversion to Islam was the clarity and simplicity of Islamic theology. Semua Muslim yang diorganisir KMF awalnya benar-benar bagian integral dari bangsa Korea yang menjadi Muallaf bukan karena kedatangan imigran Muslim dari negara-negara Islam. Sejak tahun 1970-an pemerintah Korea membantu KMF dalam perkembangan Islam, padahal selama itu mereka simpati pada Zionis dan pro Israel bahkan sejak masa kemerdekaan sampai sekarang berada di bawah naungan Amerika. Pemerintah Korea memperlakukan Muslim atas dasar sama dengan kelompok agama lainnya, tidak mendiskriminasi bahkan membuka pintu lebar-lebar dakwah KMF dengan memberikan sebidang tanah untuk pembangunan masjid dan universitas Islam. Meski Islam agama baru dan minoritas di Korea namun memiliki posisi terhormat dan stategis. Dalam memobilisasi perkembangan Islam, KMF melakukan kaderisasi mengirim beberapa pemuda Muslim Korea ke negara- negara Muslim untuk belajar Islam dan melakukan riset. Terlihat bahwa minoritas Muslim Korea punya nasip lebih cerah dan menjanjikan jika dibandingkan dengan keadaan minoritas Muslim lainnya.

KARABENICK Department of Sociology Combined Program in Education and Psychology University of Maryland University of Michigan To capture the common features of diverse fundamentalist movements, overcome etymological variability, and assess predictors, religious fundamentalism is conceptualized as a set of beliefs about and attitudes toward religion, expressed in a disciplinarian deity, literalism, exclusivity, and intolerance. Evidence from representative samples of over 23,000 adults in Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, and Turkey supports the conclusion that fundamentalism is stronger in countries where religious liberty is lower, religion less fractionalized, state structure less fragmented, regulation of religion greater, and the national context less globalized. Among individuals within countries, fundamentalism is linked to religiosity, confidence in religious institutions, belief in religious modernity, belief in conspiracies, xenophobia, fatalism, weaker liberal values, trust in family and friends, reliance on less diverse information sources, lower socioeconomic status, and membership in an ethnic majority or dominant religion/sect. A fresco from the Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves, dated to the 9th century; although Albert von Le Coq (1913) assumed the blue-eyed, red-haired monk was a Tocharian,[1] modern scholarship has identified similar Caucasian figures of the same cave temple (No. 9) as ethnic Sogdians,[2] an Eastern Iranian people who inhabited Turfan as an ethnic minority community during the phases of Tang Chinese (7th- 8th century) and Uyghur rule (9th-13th century).[3] Buddhism entered Han China via the Silk Road, beginning in the 1st or 2nd century CE.[4][5] The first documented translation efforts by Buddhist monks in China (all foreigners) were in the 2nd century CE under the influence of the expansion of the Kushan Empire into the Chinese territory of the Tarim Basin under Kanishka.[6][7] These contacts brought Gandharan Buddhist culture into territories adjacent to China proper. Direct contact between Central Asian and Chinese Buddhism continued throughout the 3rd to 7th century, well into the Tang period. From the 4th century onward, with Faxian's pilgrimage to India (395–414), and later Xuanzang (629–644), Chinese pilgrims started to travel by themselves to northern India, their source of Buddhism, in order to get improved access to original scriptures. Much of the land route connecting northern India (mainly Gandhara) with China at that time was ruled by the Kushan Empire, and later the Hephthalite Empire. The Indian form of Buddhist tantra (Vajrayana) reached China in the 7th century.

Introduction After the start of the twenty-first century, studying the relationship between Japan and Islam, including the study about “Japanese Policy toward Muslims( 「回教 政策」),” gets various results, including some from new source materials. There were some memoirs and interviews related to this policy, but these were, unfortunately, with the other source materials, both in Japanese and foreign languages. For a long time Japanese scholars have interest in this policy but hesitated to undertake aca- demic research for various reasons. However, Islamic studies recommenced after the war without any assessment of prior academic researches. Nowadays, although many source materials have disappeared, aggressive and corroborative studies have surfaced (see Misawa 2010). In this paper, we would like to introduce the new source material among the Japanese periodicals, in order to get more detailed information about Japanese relations with Islam before and during World War II.

    13 MUSLIM INTELLECTUALS AND JAPAN A Pan-Islamist mediator, Abdurreshid Ibrahim Komatsu Hisao Since the end of the nineteenth century, especially after the Russo-Japanese War in 1904–1905, Muslim intellectuals began to take substantial interest in the emer- gence of modern Japan, and to develop a positive image of Japan and the Japanese people. In general, they supposed that Japan adopted Western civilization without abandoning its traditional culture, becoming one of the most developed countries in the world within a short period after the Meiji revolution. Of these Muslim intellectuals interested in Japan, Abdurreshid Ibrahim (1857–1944) was among the most outstanding.1 He not only introduced Japan and Japanese people in detail to the broad Turkic Muslim audience through his extensive travels, by means of his journal, Âlem-i ⁄slâm: Japonya1da intivar-ı ⁄slâmiyet [The World of Islam: The Spread of Islam in Japan],2 but also made efforts later in his life to establish a close relationship between the Muslim world and Japan based on his Pan-Islamic (⁄ttihad-ı ⁄slâm) ideology and strategy.
