Jean Blaydes Madigan is an Elementary School Physical Educator with 30 years teaching experience, recognized for her excellence in teaching. She was awarded Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the year for Texas in 1992 and in 1993 for the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (Southern Districts). In 1997 she received the Texas Association of Health Physical Education Recreation and Dance (TAHPERD) Honor Award. Jean will present contemporary information linking brain based learning theory with movement and how this can be applied to teaching practice to promote quality learning. She will illustrate how movement can be incorporated into learning experiences as a key ingredient to engage and facilitate learning. She is a dynamic presenter who has facilitated workshops on this topic throughout the United States and Internationally. Jean is the author of articles linking Brain Research and Movement to Learning and she has worked with organisations including TAHPERD, American Heart Association, the Texas Association for Supervisors & Curriculum Developers, Parenting Magazine, Teaching Elementary Physical Education, and Kimbo Educational. In 2005 Jean was awarded Advocate of the Year from PE4LIFE in recognition of her development of an Action Based Learning (ABL) Program as a model elementary PE program. She has produced videos on ‘How to Make Learning a Moving Experience’ and ‘Teaching the Teen Brain’ and resources titled ‘Thinking on Your Feet: A Year’s Worth of Lesson Plans, Action Based Learning™ Lab Manual’, and the ‘Body Brain Adventure LAB Manual.’ Jean is currently involved in curriculum writing in a number of special projects including the Eric Jensen CD Library, Cooper Institute for Aerobic Research's Voyager after school program, and the Richardson and Humble Independent School’s Districts PE Curricula. *Jean will present her keynote address and conduct three 90 minute practical sessions. Professor Donna Cross has an international profile in school health promotion intervention research. She is Professor of Child and Adolescent Health and the Scientific Director of the Child Health Promotion Research Centre (CHPRC) at Edith Cowan University (WA). The public health outcomes of her research have positively influenced the health promotion practice of teachers, schools and parents throughout WA. Dr Cross’s research team is currently conducting 12 cross‐sectional and longitudinal school‐based health promotion research projects involving children, adolescents, their parents and educators in the areas of bullying, cyber bullying, aggression and violence, school connectedness, drug use, obesity prevention and smoking cessation. Since 2000, under the direction of Professor Cross, the CHPRC has conducted several large‐scale research projects in the area of school bullying, including the Friendly Schools (FS) and Friendly Schools Friendly Families (FSFF) projects, and the Supportive Schools Project (SSP). Recently, the CHPRC completed the Australian Covert Bullying Prevalence Study, commissioned by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, and the Cyber Friendly Schools Project (2008‐2009, Public Education Endowment Trust). We feature research articles commemorating the events of 150 years ago by Gillian Hibbins and Trevor Ruddell. You can explore more of the 1859 story of Australian Football in the feature displays on level 1 and 3 of the Pavilion. These are supported by Ross Perry‘s remembrance of the great Australian cyclist and dual Olympic champion Russell Mockridge and an examination of football board games by Eric Panther. Vale Stanley Bannister It is with sadness that we record the passing on April 7 of MCC colleagues. He loved bringing his wife Phyl along to the annual Library volunteer Stanley Bannister at the age of 80. Stan joined Volunteers’ Luncheon, and he was especially proud the year that the Melbourne Cricket Club in January 1981.     In from the Cold: Tom Wills – A Nineteenth Century Sporting Hero By Gregory Mark de Moore A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY School of Human Movement, Recreation and Performance Faculty of Arts, Education and Human Development Victoria University Melbourne, Victoria September 2008 i Abstract Tom Wills was the most important Australian sportsman of the mid-nineteenth century, but it is only in the first decade of the twenty-first century that he has grown in profile as a figure of cultural significance. Although Tom Wills is best recalled as the most important figure in early Australian Rules football, it was cricket that dominated his life. He rose to prominence in cricket during his time at Rugby school in England during the 1850s. When he returned to Australia he became the captain of the Victorian cricket team. On 10 July 1858 he penned what has become one of the most famous documents in Australian sporting history: a letter calling for the formation of a ‘foot- ball’ club. Only three years later his father was murdered by aborigines in central Queensland in what is recorded as the highest number of European settlers killed by aborigines in a single assault. Remarkably, only five years after his father’s murder, Tom Wills coached an aboriginal cricket team from western Victoria. Tom Wills’ life ended early, as did so many lives of colonial sportsmen, shortened by the effects of alcohol. Alcohol abuse led directly to the suicide of Wills at the age of 44 years. This thesis is the first academic attempt to uncover and then critically review some of the important parameters that shaped his life.

Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT: For the last 30 years or so, there has been discussion and dispute as to whether or not Australian Football as we know it today was originally based on an Aboriginal game of football known as Marn grook. Those who support the Marn grook argument may have been too imaginative, while those who oppose its possible influence on the beginnings of Australian Rules football may not have given sufficient consideration to that possibility. In this article I consider the evolution of the Anglo/Australian game and discuss and compare the references to Aboriginal hand-ball and football. As all of the references to Aboriginal ball games come from Anglo/Australian observers, I will particularly note the background to these references and discuss their relevance and validity.
