"Dia bukan hakim dunia. Yang saya tahu S46 satu parti sahaja," katanya. -- BERNAMA AZZ AKD .

However, the PH government, led by ex-premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, only lasted 22 months. Accordingly, the sudden collapse of the PH government drew many to offer their respective analyses. James Chin (2020) wrote one of them titled ‘Malaysia: The 2020 Putsch for Malay Islam Supremacy’. He argued that, amongst the many reasons attributable to its sudden collapse, one stood out – the position of Islam and Malay supremacy in Malaysia. Since Malaysia is predominantly a Malay-Muslim country, such a profound claim warrants a thorough response. Thus, this study’s objective is to analyse and offer critiques on Chin’s work based on the three main factors, namely the concept of Malay supremacy, unreadiness of Malays to share power with non-Malays and the position of non-Malays e ISSN 2735 - 1904 https://doi.org/10.22452/JOMAS.vol32no1.8 118 Jurnal Pengajian Melayu - JOMAS, Jilid 32(1), 2021: 118-137 in the top government positions.

  • NIK AZIZ HALANG PAS SERTAI SEMULA BN (Bernama 30/07/1999)
30 JUL 1999 Razaleigh-PAS NIK AZIZ HALANG PAS SERTAI SEMULA BN MACHANG, 30 Julai (Bernama) -- PAS pernah bersetuju menyertai semula Barisan Nasional bersama-sama tiga lagi parti pembangkang tetapi dibantah oleh Mursyidul Amnya Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, demikian menurut Pengerusi Badan Perhubungan Umno Kelantan Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.

The above assumption, and its many consequent analyses of a rising, perhaps even threatening, ‘political Islam’ seemed justified, if belatedly, by the results of the November 1999 general election.

Whilst the country has been able to sustain a relatively stable politics since the 1969 tragedy, and hence spawn a rapid economic development (at least until the 1997 Asian economic crisis), the project of nation-building remained a basic national agenda yet to be fully resolved. This study investigates the delicate process of nation-building in Malaysia in the post 1970s, especially in the context of the vision of constructing the Bangsa Malaysia or 'a united Malaysian nation' enshrined in Mahathir's Vision 2020 project which was introduced in 1991. The aim of the study is firstly, to examine the underlying socio-political parameters that shaped and influenced the politics of nation-building in the country, and secondly, to explore the viability of the project of Bangsa Malaysia in the context of the daunting challenges involved in the process of nation-building. Drawing from a range of theoretical frameworks as well as from both primary and secondary data, the study contends that, based on the Malaysian experience, the potent interplay between the forces of ethnicity and nationalism constitute the crux of the problems in the politics of nation-building in Malaysia.

The electoral authoritarian system is now in a state of transition. The electoral breakthrough was the result of longer-term socio-economic transformations, but the formation of a strong pre-electoral coalition was ultimately decisive for the victory. The article compares various coalitions and their performance during seven elections since 1990.

The Islamization of the State: A Framework and Case Study in Malaysia Research Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for graduation with research distinction in Political Science in the undergraduate colleges of The Ohio State University By Kok-Hin Ooi The Ohio State University April 2015 Project Advisers: Dr. Jan Pierskalla, Department of Political Science Dr. R. William Liddle, Department of Political Science 0 The Islamization of the State: A Framework and Case Study in Malaysia Kok-Hin Ooi The Ohio State University, USA This thesis attempts to provide a framework to study the Islamization of the state in Malaysia; a successful result of which can be used to approach the study of Islamization in other Muslim- majority countries. It postulates and examines four critical factors: the roles of electoral politics, the judiciary, religious bureaucracy, and non-state actors. Electoral politics in Malaysia is dominated by the country’s biggest political parties, UMNO and PAS. Through competition and cooperation, they were the catalysts for the rise of political Islam and the Islamization of the society, especially after the 1980s. From the beginning, there has been a heated debate about the status and role of Islam in Malaysian politics. The country’s constitution provides for Common Law while stating that Islam is the religion of the federation. The matter became more delicate when the Constitution was amended in 1988 to effectively establish a dual-law system consisting of Civil Court and Sharia Court. This hybrid judiciary system led to a couple of controversial court rulings regarding the position of Islam, which sparked public protests.

  • Ideals and Realities in the State of Kelantan, Malaysia
Southeast Asian Studies, Vol. 37, No.2, September 1999 Establishing an Islamic State: Ideals and Realities in the State of Kelantan, Malaysia MUHAMMAD SYUKRI SALLEH* Abstract This paper observes an experience in establishing an Islamic State in the State of Kelantan, Malaysia, undertaken by the Malaysian Pan-Islamic Party (PAS) -led government. From the outset of its establishment, PAS holds to the ideals that political and governing power, hence an Islamic State, is indeed an important means in executing a complete law of Allah. Without political power, PAS believes, not only an establishment of an Islamic State is impossible, but the execution of the laws of Allah that binds the complete Islamic way of life would also be unachievable. In the State of Kelantan, the ideal of having the governing and political power has already been accomplished. But this is inadequate. The PAS-led government is facing with two unfavourable realities. Firstly, the realities that are related to external factors, from outside the Party, and secondly to internal factors, from within the Party and the PAS-led government themselves. In the former, one witness the role of the Federal Barisan Nasional government, especially through its Federal Development Department established in the State, in interrupting the endeavours undertaken by the PAS-led government. In the latter, PAS is suffering from at least five realities, viz. leadership identity crisis, lack of practical experience and expertise, the existence of unmotivated civil servants, absence of either a blueprint or a proper operational guideline, and refusal to welcome help from other sympathised Islamic movements. Consequently, the idealism of the PAS-led government in establishing an Islamic State in the State of Kelantan has yet to be fully realised.
