Lusty University of Nevada, Las Vegas While metalheads around the world embrace the engaging storylines of their favorite songs, the influence of canonical literature on heavy metal musicians does not appear to have garnered much interest from the academic world. This essay considers a wide swath of canonical literature from the Bible through the Science Fiction/Fantasy trend of the 1960s and 70s and presents examples of ways in which musicians adapt historical events, myths, religious themes, and epics into their own contemporary art. I have constructed artificial categories under which to place various songs and albums, but many fit into (and may appear in) multiple categories. A few bands who heavily indulge in literary sources, like Rush and Styx, don’t quite make my own “heavy metal” category. Some bands that sit 101 Lusty, “Rocking the Canon” LATCH, Vol. 6, 2013, pp. 101-138 on the edge of rock/metal, like Scorpions and Buckcherry, do. A segment devoted to the Bible as a source text has many pockets of variation not considered here (country music, Christian rock, Christian metal).

o R M D EVERY MUSICIAN KNOWS IT’s THE RHYTHM SECTION THAT HOLDS a band together. But who knew we’d find as durable an application of that maxim as the one exemplified by the history of Fleetwood Mac? & Over the last thirty years, Fleetwood Mac has comprised fifteen musicians shuffled through six major lineups, resulting in endless tin- kerings with tone and genre. Yet the two members to survive it all rarely write tunes and never front the recordings. They’re the beat- keepers - drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John Me Vie. The fact that a rhythm section could sustain a band through thirty years seems all the more amazing considering the traumatic histories of the band’s shifting array o f stage-front stars.

Santa Cruz Bird Club Newsletter Vol. 64 No. 5: May/Aug 2020 PHOEBASTRIA NIGRIPES Inside Going the D i s t a n c e - By Emily Coletta No Events due to Covid-19 Pandemic could say a lot of things about this story. I could highlight the unlikely fact that a Laysan Albatross crash landed in the Santa Cruz Mountains. That it sat there without getting eaten for at least two days. That it landed in the best possible place—on a “perfectly flat grassy runway” within a half mile of two seabird Ibiologists. I could joke about how it wasn’t an April Fool’s Day prank. Mostly though, I want to celebrate this unexpected pelagic visitor and the twin acts of paying attention and taking action—seeing something strange and taking the matter to hand. If there was ever a time to celebrate cooperation across distance, it is now. It is late on the evening of March 31st when I get a video text from my friend Bird-Safe Kate Jaffe. My phone screen is bright. I Building Design squint at the video and play it twice. In it, a Laysan Albatross sits in the grass. The bird swivels its white head from side to side as though it’s watching a tennis match. Its brown eyes follow the camera, the surrounding feathers making each into a dark, smudged comma. A man’s Santa Cruz Birds voice asks, “What’s going on buddy?” My thoughts exactly—this video was taken on This Bears Rodeo Gulch Road, Soquel.
