119 BIBLIOTHECA ORIENTALIS LXII N° 1-2, januari-april 2005 120 As to the hermeneutical matter it is argued that ‘pesher' refers to a type of interpretation which is best characterized as ‘fulfillment exegesis'. There is no discussion of other aspects of this type of interpretation, such as the modes of it and the question of the techniques involved (see, e.g., M. Horgan, Pesharim, pp. 244-247). In the main section of the book, first a synopsis of Qumran history is given (pp. 25-58) in which the author deals with several debated issues and uncertainties in a sound and balanced way. This is followed by chapters about the pesharim and Qumran history, the dat- ing of the pesharim, and the issue of historical allusions in the pesharim, the last of which is central to the book. Since the interpretations in the pesharim are presented in a camou- flaged way, and therefore are difficult for ‘outsiders’ to understand, the interpretation of these ‘interpretations' (pesharim) is not an easy matter. It is in a sense the decod- ing of a language full of veiled names and expressions. One therefore can only agree with the following statement, ‘The historical data mirrored in the pesharim can be recovered and understood only within a balance of delicate possibilities and probabilities' (p. 116). The pesharim, dated roughly speaking to the first half of the first century BCE, allude to persons and groups in Judah of the time, and to persons and groups outside Judah. One can agree that, e.g., the ‘Seekers-after-smooth-things' as well as ‘Ephraim' are a sobriquet for the Pharisees, but one won- ders whether Pesher Isaiah-a (4QpIsa-a [4Q161) is one of the sources which refers to king Jonathan (Alexander Jannaeus), because this pesher does not offer a clear reference to this king. -

BY STEPHEN EMMEL The present investigation seeks to clarify statements in the secondary Coptological literature of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries con- cerning the existence of a “Codex St.-Louis,”1 that is to say, a Coptic manuscript supposedly brought to Paris by Louis IX at the end of the Sixth Crusade in 1254.2 The Objects of Investigation (1) Bibliothèque Nationale de France (FR-BN), manuscript Copte 13. A beautifully illustrated Tetraevangelium (the four Gospels) in Bohairic Coptic, copied and illuminated between 1178 and 1180 by Michael, 1 So called by René-Georges Coquin in correspondence between us in the early 1990s. 2 Most of the basic research for this investigation was done a little over a decade ago, and I now take the occasion of the Eighth International Congress of Coptic Studies (Paris, June/July 2004, with an accompanying exhibition titled “Pages d’une autre Égypte: les manuscrits des Coptes” planned by the Bibliothèque Nationale de France to include the manuscript in question, Copte 13) to report it. I owe special debts of gratitude for assis- tance of one sort and another to Anne Boud’hors, Jacques Debergh, Michel Garel, Iris Hinerasky, and Bentley Layton. The World and Writing of Francesco di Marco Datini and his Correspondents” Francesco di Marco Datini, the so-called Merchant of Prato, may be the best-documented correspondent in the premodern world. From humble beginnings as a trader in Avignon, Datini carefully nurtured his social and economic resources until late in life he sat at the center of an economic network that employed a heterogeneous group of friends, countrymen and business associates in all the major ports of the western Mediterranean. Letter-writing was at the center of his business practice and the surviving corpus of his letters is truly monumental, comprising over 150,000 individual items. The Datini archive, though, also preserves correspondence that might be categorized as social rather than economic – letters to his absent wife and other personal friends. This paper will consider both mercantile and personal letters from the Datini archive as a way to think about the network as a tool of analysis, as well as to consider the role of letters in managing trust and interpersonal relationships in the premodern world. The Sherleys and the Shah Persia as the Stakes in a Rogue’s Gambit GarY ScHWarTz The second of the three sons of the Sussex peer Sir Thomas Sherley (ca. 1542–1612), Sir Anthony Sherley (1565–ca. 1638), suffered from—and made others to suffer even more from—a personality disorder of the kind we encounter in con men. He was a keen judge of men who used his insights only to manip- ulate those who trusted him, in the first place his father, brothers, and protectors. During his wide travels, nearly every move he made left others holding large uncovered loans and debts. His twentieth-century biographers Boies Penrose and Edward Denison Ross were unable to contain themselves when it came to describing Anthony’s character: “He was an inveterate and unscrupulous intriguer, a sententious hypocrite devoid of all real sentiment … He had all the natural devotion of a buccaneer, and his cupidity was only equalled by his extravagance.”1 He was “a self-seeking adventurer pure and simple, a born intriguer, a complete opportunist, a man whose word could never be relied on and whose personal dishonesty leaves us gasping.”2 These judgments are no different from several testimonies from Anthony’s lifetime. His secretary Tomas Pagliarini wrote to the Spanish ambassador in Venice: “Don Antonio is a man who comes running whenever there is an offer of money. Which Bible, Whose Text? Biblical Theologies in Light of the Textual History of the Hebrew Bible Stefan Schorch The most important foundation of any biblical theology is the text of the Bible, both in principle and in detail. At first glance, this basis seems to be a very firm and well-defined one. Looking more closely, however, the ground turns out to be rather shaky. Which text should be or has to be re- garded as the basis of a Christian biblical theology? Of course, this question is not a new one. As is well-known, the prob- lem, which biblical text the Church and theology should draw on, was one of the central controversies in the theological conflicts between Roman Catholics and Protestants already in the 16th century. Thus, with respect to the Old Testament, Protestants insisted on the hebraica veritas, while Ro- man Catholics gave the highest authority to the Latin text of the Vulgate. Apparently, the Protestant approach could be justified by the fact that most books of the Old Testament canon were originally composed in Hebrew, while the Vulgate was only a translation. However, the Roman Catholic side quickly became aware of this position’s Achilles’ heel: while it hardly could be denied that Hebrew was the original language of most Old Testa- ment compositions, the question as to whether the Masoretic text was in- deed identical with the original Hebrew version proved to be a very effec- tive weapon, as can be seen in different developments throughout the 17th century: ‒ On the one hand, the impact of these challenges can be well observed in the dogmatic writings of Lutheran orthodoxy in the 17th century. -

Chapel Hill 2009 Approved by: Tim Carter, chair Annegret Fauser Anne MacNeil John Nádas Jocelyn Neal © 2009 Virginia Christy Lamothe ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii Abstract Virginia Christy Lamothe: “The Theater of Piety: Sacred Operas for the Barberini Family (Rome, 1632-1643)” (Under the direction of Tim Carter) In a time of religious war, plague, and reformation, Pope Urban VIII and his cardinal- nephews Antonio and Francesco Barberini sought to establish the authority of the Catholic Church by inspiring audiences of Rome with visions of the heroic deeds of saints. One way in which they did this was by commissioning operas based on the lives of saints from the poet Giulio Rospigliosi (later Pope Clement IX), and papal musicians Stefano Landi and Virgilio Mazzocchi. Aside from the merit of providing an in-depth look at four of these little-known works, Sant’Alessio (1632, 1634), Santi Didimo e Teodora (1635), San Bonifatio (1638), and Sant’Eustachio (1643), this dissertation also discusses how these operas reveal changing ideas of faith, civic pride, death and salvation, education, and the role of women during the first half of the seventeenth century. The analysis of the music and the drama stems from studies of the surviving manuscript scores, libretti, payment records and letters about the first performances. -

FRANCIS XAVIER IN EUROPE AND ASIA Rachel Miller, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2016 Recent historical studies have focused on the vital role that Catholic saints played after the Council of Trent, investigating how these holy figures were utilized to alleviate all manner of problems besetting the Post-Tridentine Church, emerging European nation states, and individual Catholics. My dissertation, however, approaches this issue from an art historical perspective, considering how images of St. Francis Xavier, the sixteenth-century Jesuit missionary, exercised considerable agency in an early modern world rife with global crisis. Specifically, I investigate Xaverian prints and paintings created in border zones of early modern Catholicism or in territories of the Iberian empires, particularly Antwerp, Goa, and Naples.
