Furusiyya and the FEI Nations Cup™ Editorial by Louise Parkes It’s not always easy to take a great idea and make it even better, but that is exactly what the new-look Furusiyya series has done for the long-established and much-loved sport of FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping.

In 2013, thanks to the support and enthusiasm of the Saudi Equestrian Fund, this team Jumping competition which has grasped the public imagination for over a century was modernised and transformed, and extended its appeal right across the globe.

The ancient term ‘Furusiyya’ embraces the concepts of horsemanship and equestrian expertise along with purity, nobility and chivalry, and all of these elements have long been an intrinsic part of the history and tradition of Nations Cup Jumping.

Great pride in representing one’s country, in demonstrating the extraordinary bond between horse and rider as they bravely tackle the toughest courses of fences, and a huge sense of team spirit and camaraderie have been key to its success and popularity. However it was initially restricted to a limited number of top-class nations while the rest of the world looked on.

Last year, however, Furusiyya became the catalyst as the doors were flung wide open and a whole range of new countries were encouraged to take part. It was a challenging moment for the traditionalists who felt that only the best of the best should compete against one another in this particular series, but even its strongest critics altered their opinions as the inaugural Furusiyya season progressed.

Provided with the opportunity to show just how good they could be, previously unknown horse-and-rider combinations sparkled and shone, and a whole range of new countries began to emerge with the promise of great things to come. The very first season ended with a glorious finale in Barcelona, Spain at which the French team came out on top ahead of while Ireland finished third. The atmosphere was electric, and the event was hailed, far and wide, as one of the most enjoyable, entertaining and competitive fixtures of recent times.

HRH Prince Faissal commented at the end of the series about the potential for further growth over the coming years, and that in itself is another exciting prospect. This year’s Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping series is expected to further cement the future of the prestigious and high-profile sport which was once described by FEI President HRH Princess Haya as “the jewel in the crown of the FEI”.

Once again, Barcelona will host the world final in October, and we can expect many wonderful moments of sporting endeavour before the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ 2014 champions are crowned.

CSIO5* Rome (ITA) 23 May 2014 4

Presentation of Furusiyya has embraced the (هيسورف :For centuries, the ancient term Furusiyya (Arabic idea of horsemanship and equestrian knowledge, and now this same sense of purity, nobility and chivalry has been brought to the FEI Nations Cup™ – the Show Jumping’s leading team competition. The term is a derivation of faris, or horseman, and faras, a horse.

Furusiyya is the brand name for the commercial arm of the Saudi Equestrian Fund. The Saudi Equestrian Fund was created by King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz by royal decree in November 2009 to give the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia a lasting legacy in through sport and cultural events.

Reflecting a huge growth in popularity for the sport around the world, the new structure of the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping embraces more countries than ever before, who will compete head to head in a competition which pits the traditional powerhouses of the sport against teams from developing nations.

Furusiyya is immensely proud to be the title sponsor of the FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping until 2017, and to be the catalyst for the international expansion of this great equestrian competition. During the inaugural 2013 season, no less than 37 nations competed for 18 places at the Final, which will was staged to great success in Barcelona (ESP) at the end of September. The first Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping Final featured teams representing countries from around the world and was a true reflection of the popularity of the Jumping sport on the global stage.

But 2013 was only the start. The Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping has been created to make the sport more accessible to all nations, and Furusiyya believes that the competition will lead to more countries than ever before wanting to compete against the best in years to come. This will see an increase in the number of Nations Cup shows being staged around the world and ultimately, higher standards of competition across all levels.

So, we at Furusiyya wish all the horse and rider combinations the best of luck today, and let’s all enjoy the start of a new era and look forward to some top class international team Jumping throughout the 2014 season.

Longines is the official timekeeper of the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping www.longines.com

Under the new agreement between Longines and the FEI, the Swiss watchmaker is proud to support the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping with its timekeeping expertise. In January 2013 Longines and the FEI formalised a partnership that sees the brand become the FEI’s first Top Partner. Longines will also be the Official Timekeeper and the Official Watch of the FEI.

Longines’ passion for equestrian sport dates back to 1878, when it produced a chronograph engraved with a jockey and his mount. Seen on the racetracks as early as 1881 and extremely popular among jockeys and horse-lovers, this model enabled its user to time performances to the second. It was already being used by most sport judges in New York in 1886. In addition, the brand was involved for the first time in the Concours Hippique International Officiel de Genève as timekeeper in 1926. Today Longines’ involvement in equestrian sports includes besides Jumping, Endurance and flat racing.

The partnership between Longines and the FEI reinforces the traditional and long-lasting commitment of the Swiss watchmaker in equestrian sports and makes the brand a major player in this field. A key element of this collaboration is a significant investment by Longines in the development – together with the FEI – of cutting-edge timekeeping and data-handling services, including the related technology, specifically for equestrian sport. The development of these services will be for multimedia applications, giant screens, scoreboards, and for broadcasters as part of the presentation of FEI events around the world.

Longines has been based in Saint-Imier, , since 1832. Its watchmaking expertise reflects a strong devotion to tradition, elegance and performance. It has generations of experience as the official timekeeper at world championships and as a partner of international sports federations. Longines is a member of The Swatch Group S.A., the world’s leading manufacturer of horological products. With an excellent reputation for creating refined timepieces, the brand, whose emblem is the winged hourglass, has outlets in over 130 countries.

The rules The calendar Under the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping 2014 rules, the world has been divided into six regions for the purpose of qualifying teams for the Final: • Europe (Divisions 1 and 2) • North & Central America • South America • Middle East • Asia/Australasia • Africa The number of qualifiers for the 2014 season has been limited to 20, with eight in both Europe Division 1 and Europe Division 2. The North and Central America & Caribbean League now has three qualifiers, including a new CSIO at Coapexpan (MEX) from 7-11 May. The season opens at Al-Ain (UAE), the single qualifier in the Middle East League, with the CSIO5* running from 5-7 February.

The Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping Final will once again be held at the Real Club de Polo of Barcelona (ESP), venue for the equestrian events at the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992.

The detailed calendar of the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping 2014 is available on p. 10 of this press kit.

The nations Qualifying events for all regions will be run under the traditional two-round Nations Cup formula. To be eligible to participate in qualifying events for the Final, all nations must have a minimum of four riders in the Jumping Rankings at the end of October the previous year.

For regions without qualifying events, the Longines Rankings will be used to determine the teams that will qualify for the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping Final.

National Federations participating in the series must compete at their home event, if applicable. The second round at each qualifying event is restricted to the top eight teams, with all four athletes competing.

National Federations competing in Division 1 and 2 can earn points at a limited number of events in their region, depending on the number of qualifiers staged in the region. National Federations must declare these events by 1 February of that year. For regions where there are fewer than four qualifying events, all events count for points. National Federations may participate at events outside their region if invited, but may not earn points at these events.

CSIO5* Rome (ITA) 23 May 2014 8

The nations declared for the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping 2014 are listed on p. 11 of this press kit.

Points system The following points system will be used for all qualifying competitions: 1st 100 2nd 90 3rd 80 4th 70 5th 60 6th 55 7th 50 8th 45 9th 40 10th 35

Qualifying points for the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping are based on each eligible team’s classification among the teams from the respective Region or Division in the competition, meaning that an eligible team placed eighth in the competition obtains the points for seventh place if the seventh placed team is from outside the Region or Division.

The Final The Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping Final 2014 has been allocated to Barcelona (ESP) and will take place from 9 to 12 October. A total of 18 teams will be eligible to compete – nine from Europe, and two each from North & Central America, South America, Middle East and Asia, and one from Africa. If the home team has not qualified for the Final it will be eligible to compete as the host nation, increasing the number of teams to 19. The FEI Nations Cup™ Final will consist of three competitions, with all qualified teams starting in the first of these. This one-round competition, not against the clock, will decide the top eight teams that go through to the third and final competition. Teams placed ninth and lower will compete in the consolation competition (competition 2).

The eight teams through to the third competition, which decides the outright winner of the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping Final, start on zero penalties. Four riders in each team compete in the first round, with a jump-off against the clock in the event of equality of penalties for first place after this round.

Only three riders per team go through to the jump-off, with no drop score, guaranteeing a thrilling finish to the series.

In case of a tie for any place on the overall Regional classification, teams are separated by:  giving preference to the team with the greater number of first place classifications; in case there is still a tie the number of second place classifications will count and if necessary the number of third place classifications and so on until the tie is broken.

If after applying this method there is still a tie for any place at the conclusion of the last event of the season, preference will be given to:  the team with the greater number of clear rounds among the scores counting (i.e. maximum 3 scores per round per team) from each competition throughout the season; if there is still a tie the scores counting (i.e. maximum 3 scores per round per team) of each team from each competition will be added together and preference will be given to the team with the lowest overall score.

Two North-Central American/Caribbean teams will qualify for the 2014 Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Final (CSIO5* Barcelona/ESP, 09-12 October 2014).
