Crystal ball, anyone? A reality of breeding is that matings must be planned well in advance of sales. Current yearlings are the result of decisions made in 2017 and, in the case of proven sires, based on race results of 2017. Predicting future sire success is folly, otherwise how does one explain why Rip Van Winkle (Galileo), sire of New Zealand’s second best horse, Te Akau Shark, has just three lots in Book 1? In addition, Swiss Ace (Secret Savings), sire of quality sprinter and recent winner of the Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) Julius, has just two. Rip Van Winkle averaged 84 live foals his first four seasons at stud. In 2018 (the crop represented this year), he produced just 32 live foals. Meanwhile, Swiss Ace averaged 77 live foals his first seven seasons. In 2018, that number had dropped to 58. In addition, Ocean Park averaged 103 live foals his first four seasons, but just 62 in 2018. Finally, look for Savabeel to preside over all others and Iffraaj to have a very good sale. Of the first season sires, Tivaci is expected to make a lot of noise, with a strong buzz detected Karaka NZB around his offspring in the lead-up to the sale.

Hewitson gets his Valley victory on Ferraris veteran

BY DAVID MORGAN | HKJC_RACING

yle Hewitson earned a long-awaited and deserved first Happy Valley win on Wednesday to help trainer David Ferraris continue his solid form this term,L particularly with his stable’s old-stagers. The two-time South African champion jockey has had a stark introduction to Hong Kong racing, with his stats rolling into tonight’s nine-race card reading one win from 174 rides – a win strike rate of 0.57 per cent. But Hewitson has not buckled in the face of limited opportunities. After enduring a barren four months before sealing his breakthrough Hong Kong win at Sha Tin, the extra 24 days for his Valley follow-up must have seemed a breeze. “It’s probably a lot more exciting here at the Valley with the atmosphere,” Hewitson said Lyle Hewitson (left) HKJC after driving the Ferraris-trained Kiram (Elusive City) to a neck verdict in the Class 3 Hung To Ferraris was pleased for his 22-year-old in great form, and I knew that if he kicked at the Handicap (1650m). countryman whose talent, he believes, deserves top of the straight with a lead they’d struggle to “Without blowing my own trumpet, I feel more success. catch him.” I’ve been riding really well and getting positive “It’s lovely,” the trainer said. “Lyle should Hewitson took the bull by the horns with results from limited opportunities.
