The Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-Conditioned Racemare LADY KIPLING Gave Her Sire SAVABEEL His 7Th Individual Stakes Winner for the Season Last Weekend
The Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-conditioned racemare LADY KIPLING gave her sire SAVABEEL his 7th individual stakes winner for the season last weekend. The 5YO mare achieved the feat in the Gr.3 Eagle Technology Stakes (1600m), winning with 1.5 lengths to spare in the hands of Leith Innes. Bred by Alchemy Family Trust & Windsor Park Stud Ltd, Lady Kipling was a $62,500 Select Sale graduate. With the 11 wins to her credit including the Gr.2 Cal Isuzu Stakes (1600m) and Gr.2 Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1400m), she has so far returned NZ$437,800 in earnings to her owners Geoff Candy and Lawrence Redshaw. Lady Kipling will seek to add Gr.1 success to this resume before retiring to stud, with likely Gr.1 starts ahead including the Zabeel Classic (2000m) at Ellerslie on Boxing Day or the Thorndon Mile (1600m) at Trentham in late January. Savabeel will be represented by 87 yearlings at Karaka in 2014. Gr.1 Glory for Sacred Falls
Gr.1 Glory for Sacred Falls GR.1 ROSEHILL GUINEAS TILT CONSIDERED Dato Yap Kim San's unbeaten O'Reilly colt Sacred Falls extended his winning sequence to a ‘super six’ with Saturday’s Gr.1 Sothys 40th NZ 2000 Guineas, prompting consideration for a likely tilt at the Gr.1 Rosehill Guineas. “We will sit down tomorrow and work out the best plan, but at this stage the Rosehill Guineas is a race we are considering for him,” said Raffles Farm Manager Bruce Sherwin today. Endearing himself to the task on Saturday, Sacred Falls demonstrated a gritty Gr.1 will to win. The handsome 3YO settled in the last three before improving wide to have the leaders within sights on straightening. Finding plenty when called upon, the colt dug deep to fend off the game filly Oasis Rose by a head margin at the line, with last season’s champion juvenile Warhorse finishing a neck away in third. “He’s always had the temperament and ability to be a top liner,” said Cambridge co-trainer Tony Pike after the race. “He just finds a way to win races.” “Leith (Innes) rode him like he was the best horse and got him out and going early. He had a real fight on his hands but he’s a very good horse.” Sacred Falls - who will now be spelled for 6 weeks or so, represents the 13th Gr.1 winner for his sire O'Reilly and is the 27th Gr.1 champion bred by Waikato Stud. Sports India and World
SPORTS INDIA AND WORLD World Cup Cricket History The idea of organising a World Cup of cricket was mooted and agreed to in principle in 1971 when such a proposal was discussed at a meeting of the International Cricket Conference in London. However, due to various commitments the tournaments could not be staged until 1975 when the original plan of a South African team's visit to England fell through following opposition to the country's racial policy. England's Prudential Assurance Company came forward with sponsorship and for three consecutive years - 1975, 1979 and 1983, the one-day limited overs cricket tournament was held in England. It became famous as the Prudential Cup. In the first two tournaments, apart from the six full members of the International Cricket Conference (England, Australia, West Indies, New Zealand, India and Pakistan), Sri Lanka, before being elevated to Test status in 1981, had joined East Africa in 1975 and Canada in 1979 (two top teams among the associate members) to complete the groups in the tournaments proper. The West Indies, under Clive Lloyd, not only won the first two tournaments in 1975 and 1979 but in true Calypso style they produced sparkling cricket and confirmed their unassailable supremacy in this game. India broke the West Indian stranglehold in 1983 to open a new chapter in the brief annals of this prestigious tournament. Gloaming by Kathleen Jones
Gloaming by Kathleen Jones Throughout the history of Thoroughbred racing there are many exceptional horses who have been held as examples of heroes whose names would live forever. We call them legends. But somehow, over time, the details of their successes have grown foggy until eventually the memory of these once-legendary animals lives only in the rarely-touched paper leaves of libraries. One horse in particular who deserves a better fate than anonymity is an Australian-bred gelding named Gloaming. At a time when Americans were celebrating the exploits of Man o'War and Exterminator, Australian and New Zealand race fans were going crazy for Gloaming. He won from 4 furlongs to a mile and half, setting time records at any distance. At one point his streak of victories had reached nineteen in a row. From ages 3 to 9 he began in 67 races, and won 57 of those. He was 2nd on nine other occasions. The one race in which he failed to run either first or second was a race at age 3 in which he fell. Gloaming was entirely of British descent, and was inbred 4x4 to Two Thousand Guineas runner-up, Sterling. He also carried duplications of Bend Or, Galopin, and Rosebery in his pedigree. The racing season of 1918/1919 in Australia and New Zealand got off to a slow start owing to an outbreak of influenza which necessitated the closing of several race meetings. So Gloaming's first start was a 9f prep stakes for the AJC Derby. He won his debut by 8 lengths then followed up with a new time record in the Australian Derby.
