SACRED FALLS TRIUMPHS IN G1 DONCASTER

O'Reilly colt Sacred Falls realised a dream come true result for Raffles Racing and Waikato Stud with his exciting triumph in Australasia’s most famous 1600-metre race, the A$2million Gr.1 BMW Doncaster Hcp (1600m) on Saturday.

Sacred Falls, already the winner of the Gr.1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas and runner-up to fellow Kiwi-bred three-year-old It’s A Dundeel in the Rosehill Guineas, shocked the Randwick crowd as he inflicted the first ever Sydney defeat on glamour colt Pierro.

The son of O’Reilly and Redoute’s Choice mare Iguazu’s Girl was bred and sold by Waikato Stud at the 2011 National Yearling Sale. After the handsome colt had won his first six starts in New Zealand for trainers Tony Pike and Mark Donoghue, Waikato Stud went back to Dato Yap Kim San - owner of Raffles Farm, and bought a share with a view to a stallion career.

That coincided with his transfer to Sydney trainer Chris Waller, who lined him up for the fourth time on Saturday in the hope that his Rosehill Guineas second was the sign of even better to come in the A$2 million feature.

So it proved as Sacred Falls overcame a tardy start and jockey Tommy Berry banked on an inside run. Tracking through behind the favourite Pierro, Sacred Falls proved unstoppable over the final 200 metres as he burst through to down the local hotshot, with Thorn Park filly Norzita completing a three-year-old white-wash.

“That’s racing at its finest – you can’t describe it or put it into words,” said Waller, who registered his 3rd individual win in the event.

MARK’S MAIL

What an absolute thrill it was to see Sacred Falls win the Doncaster!

As a homebred galloper who so closely resembles his own sire O'Reilly, he is a very special horse to us and I can tell you, it was a very emotional win!

We are honoured to be racing a horse with Dato Yap Kim San, his son Kyan Yap and with Raffles Racing’s manager, Bruce Sherwin.

A special thanks to Dato and his family, to the horse’s trainers Chris Waller, Tony Pike and Mark Donoghue, to bloodstock agents Guy Mulcaster - who purchased Sacred Falls as a yearling, and Bruce Perry - who very astutely enabled Waikato Stud to purchase Sacred Falls’ grand dam Iguazu, to jockeys Tommy Berry and Leith Innes, to all my Waikato team and of course, a big thanks to my own family!

We are very proud of the stallion strength at Waikato Stud and to think that this guy will add to this in 2014 is truly exciting.

For the last 20 years – and particularly so recently, Waikato Stud has continually made significant investments towards stallion prospects such as these. When you consider these sustained efforts, you can understand why we are just so delighted with the results that our roster is currently achieving on the Stallion Premierships (see below).

On one last note, how about that O'Reilly?! A Doncaster winner, a Newmarket Hcp winner and a Crystal Mile winner all in one season…that’s huge!
