Overview: When the late urban developer/preservationist Tony Goldman and daughter Jessica Goldman Srebnick, a former fashion industry executive, tapped innovative fashion designer Todd Oldham to create South Beach’s jewel, The Hotel of South Beach, formerly the Tiffany Hotel, a new wave appeared on the horizon. Its historical November 1998 opening marked the first time an American fashion designer had created all of the interior aspects of a hotel and the beautiful boutique property went on to win numerous awards and accolades. In 1999, The Hotel was named one of 31 top new hotels worldwide by Condé Nast Traveler magazine and in 2007 was listed on the magazine’s prestigious Gold List.

Originally built in 1939, by master architect L. Murray Dixon, today the hotel encompasses 53 deluxe rooms and suites, a rooftop pool with panoramic ocean views and Spire Bar, a rooftop lounge space open for private events. A new oceanfront addition to The Hotel with 20 breathtaking deluxe rooms, designed by Oldham in a glowing sunset palette, opened in January 2010, at 800 Ocean Drive, above the iconic News Café, bringing The Hotel’s rooms and suites down to the ocean. The two properties bring the total to 73 beautiful rooms and suites, with shared amenities.

Developer: Goldman Properties has been restoring historic buildings in architecturally significant locations in New York and Florida since 1968. Founded by Tony Goldman, the company was responsible for renovating New York City’s Soho district in the 1970s, Miami Beach’s Art Deco district in the 1980s, and Pennsylvania’s historic Center City in Philadelphia in the 1990s. Design & Decor: Consistent with Todd Oldham’s love of handmade details and lush colors, the décor at The Hotel is a cozy mix of cool, rich, vibrant colors, and artisan detailing. From the hand airbrushed tiles to the mosaic door pulls, almost everything was custom designed and handmade exclusively for the property. The lobby encompasses a private dining room which features lush landscaping and slatted wooden screens, creating an intimate enclave accenting green velveteen banquettes, artisan made high tech tiled lighting, and a massive hand cut golden mosaic mirror inspired by the remarkable original terrazzo floors.

The new 3-story oceanfront hotel addition above the iconic News Café reflects Oldham’s vision of Miami’s awe-inspiring sunsets, with a glowing palette of red, coral and orange balanced with earthy browns and gold. Signature details such as artisanal striped tiles in the roomy bathrooms, mosaic handles and custom fabrics abound. Guests are coddled in white linen clad beds, with cozy knitted throws; hounds-tooth covered window seats and sofas provide a perfect perch to enjoy spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Reflecting Oldman’s style is the romantic garden dining area which encompasses swaying bamboo trees and ceramic pots of ferns, and a magical Bisazza-tiled fountain in jeweled tones of green, blue, and silver. The emerald-shaped pool floats serenely on the rooftop and is surrounded by bright blue, green and turquoise crush dyed cabana curtains that reflect the crest of a wave. The Spire Bar boasts Oldham’s signature style and casual elegance. Canvas- covered, overstuffed sofas and chairs are solid white, accented with handmade orange and pink woven ribbon pillows. Sheer white fabric, stirred by the ocean breezes, hangs from the rooftop’s main wall. The flooring consists of planks of wood, painted vibrant red, orange and white. The circular Spire Bar, dramatically illuminated, surrounds the original Art Deco era Tiffany spire.

Accommodations & Amenities: The Hotel is a four-story boutique property featuring 49 deluxe rooms and 4 spacious suites, swathed in bright primary colors, where comfort is key. The rooftop deck area boasts an emerald- shaped pool overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, a stocked fitness facility, a pool bar and outdoor shower tiled in luminescent shades of green and blue. Chic poolside cabanas provide a respite from the South Florida sun as well as an ideal venue for massage treatments.
