Clinical management of cystic echinococcosis (CE) has evolved over decades without adequate evaluation of important features such as efficacy, effectiveness, rate of adverse reactions, relapse rate, and cost. CE occurs in health care environments as different as Europe/North America and resource-poor countries of the South and the East. This creates setting-specific problems in the management of patients. Furthermore, studies carried out in either of the two fundamentally different environments lack external validity, i.e., results obtained in one setting may be different from those in the other and practices that can work in one may not be applicable to the other. In this paper, we review the current management procedures of CE with particular emphasis on the evidence base and setting-specific problems. Some notes on the nomenclature, taxonomy and phylogeny of Oriental Chrysotoxum Meigen are included and one species name is here corrected to baphyrum nom. emend. (justified emendation), from the original ‘baphyrus,’ in keeping with the gender of the genus name and as per recommendations of the ICZN Code. New synonyms of C. antiquum Walker, 1852, C. baphyrum Walker, 1849, and C. intermedium Meigen, 1822, are also proposed here, and a few others confirmed. This short paper is a happening from another note on a new aphid prey record by Ghorpadé et al. (in prep.) of Chrysotoxum baphyrum Walker, recently discovered in peninsular India. These notes on the nomenclature, taxonomy and phylogeny of Chrysotoxum Meigen appear necessary to supplement data given in that paper. Chrysotoxum is neuter in gender (see ICZN, 1999: Articles 30-34), but Francis Walker (who was a fast and unreliable worker, in those days of multiple species descriptions, which were paid for!) spelled his new species from north Bengal (India) as “baphyrus” in 1849 in his “List of Diptera in the British Museum” (3: 542). Though almost all succeeding authors have copied this name, I here emend it to baphyrum (justified emendation) in keeping with the gender of the genus name which ends in –um (= neuter, vide ICZN Article 31.2) and has many of its species names also ending in –um, these in gender conformity. -

This paper includes an updated checklist of the hover-flies recorded so far in publications from the limits of Pakistan, numbering 84+ species in 42 genera, including four nomina nuda of Arif (2001). A further 16 genera and 69+ species have been recorded from adjoining Afghanistan and the Indian administered state of Jammu & Kashmir, making a total of 153+ species of 58 genera listed in this paper. Annotations on taxonomy of the included species, by the first author, are incorporated. A presumably complete bibliography of literature pertaining to Pakistani Syrphidae is also provided. Introduction Almost exactly 150 years have gone by since Enrico Brunetti (1862-1927) was born. He wrote the FAUNA OF BRITISH INDIA volume on the Syrphidae in 1923 (which was also inclusive of Pipunculidae, Conopidae and Oestridae) and which is still the prime reference on the hover- flies known from the Indian subcontinent, which then numbered 245 species in 51 genera. Knutson et al. (1975) updated the nomenclature and compiled a Catalog of Oriental Syrphidae, which increased Indian subregion species to 312 species, in 71 genera. -

Fourteen Oriental species of Paragus Latreille are treated and keyed. The following three species of the subgenus Paragus s. str. are described as new: annandalei Ghorpade, sp. nov. (northwest Himalayas), brachycerus (Malaya, Java), and sluckenbergi (Philippines) Thompson, spp. nov.; and also two species of the subgenus Pandasyoplhalmus Sluckenberg: goeldlini (Timor), and villipennis (Malaya, Sumatra, Java) Thompson, spp. nov. Paragus (Paragus) brachycerus Thompson, sp. nov. is recorded as a new predator of the coffee aphid, Toxoptera aurantii (Boyer de Fonscolombe), from Java; and its puparium figured. Some olhecjiew and known prey (and flower) records of Paragus spp^ arealso included. Male- tcrminalia of all new species and of alratus de Meijere, politus Wiedemann, and rufocinclus (Brunelti) are illustrated. Leclotypes are designated for Paragus alratus de Meijere, P. laliusculus Walker and P. politus Wiedemann. Paragus keiseri van der Goot is a new junior synonym of P. politus Wiedemann. Tentative synonymies are proposed for Paragus politus Wiedemann (= ? Piphella indica Brunelti, ? Paragus rufiventris Brunetti), and Paragus rufocinclus (Brunetti) (= ? Paragus abrogans Goeldlin de Tiefenau). Graptomyza laliuscula (Walker) (from Paragus) is proposed as a new combination.
