„Visuomenės sVeikata” ORIGINALŪS STRAIPSNIAI AVAILABILITY OF PRIVATE PRIMARY HEALTH CARE IN THE CITY OF KAUNAS Leonas Valius1, Daina Krančiukaitė-Butylkinienė1, 2 1Department of Family Medicine, Medical Academy, Lithuanian University of Health Sciences 2Institute of Cardiology, Medical Academy, Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Summary The aim of the study. To evaluate patients’ opinion about the accessibility of the provided services in private primary healthcare institutions of Kaunas city. The contingent and the methods of the study. The study was conducted in 2009. A questionnaire survey involving 280 people was carried out. All of them were registered with family physicians at primary health care institutions. For the study, we used 20-item anonymous questionnaires which focused on the availability of services provided by primary health care institutions. The studied attributes were described as relative values expressed as percentage, and 95 % confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. The chi-square criterion was applied for the comparison of the distribution of the analyzed features among the clinics. Results. The study showed that 73.5 % (95 % CI=68.3–78.7 %) of the respondents spent up to half an hour to reach their health care institutions. Also, 61.8 % (95 % CI=56.1–67.5 %) of the respondents indicated that they spent less than 5 minutes when waiting at the reception, while 58.4 % (95 % CI=52.6–64.2 %) of the respondents stated that they spent over 15 minutes when waiting at a family physician’s office door. The survey also showed that 41.9 % (95 % CI=36.1– 47.6 %) of the patients thought that waiting lines at primary healthcare institutions were inevitable. -

The Past and Present of the Samogitian Language JUOZAS PABRĖŽA https://doi.org/10.22364/bf.28.1.05 Baltu filoloģija XXVIII (1) 2019 THE PAST AND PRESENT OF THE SAMOGITIAN LANGUAGE Juozas PABRĖŽA Šiauliai University 1. Historical overview An essential question has been repeatedly raised since olden times: is Samogitian a language or a dialect? Before the appearance of standard Lithu- anian, the concept of the Samogitian language prevailed. Quite a few Samogi- tians wrote their works in Samogitian. The 19th c. boasts a particularly large number of such works. In that period the concern and efforts to create standard Lithuanian on the basis of the Samogitian dialect were particularly obvious. The language and the spelling of Dionizas Poška, Silvestras Valiūnas and Simonas Stanevičaus, all of them originally being South Samogitians, were oriented towards their native Dūnininkai dialect. Three of the most prominent Samogitians of the 19th c. — Jurgis Ambraziejus Pabrėža, Simonas Daukantas and Motiejus Valančius — employed the North Samogitian Dounininkai dialect in their writings. The creator of the standard Samogitian language J. A. Pabrėža wrote: “A Samogitian will never agree about the language either with a Lithuanian, a Prussian or a Latvian.” (Subačius 1996: 54) Juozas Čiulda, the author of the most solid grammar of the Samogitian language of the time, written in Polish in 1854 (Trumpi samprotavimai apie žemaičių kalbos gramatikos taisykles — “Brief Reasoning about the Rules of the Samogitian Language”) consistently used the concept of the Samogitian language, and at the end of his book affirms this by stating the following: “These are my speculations about the Samogitian language. -
Collectivist' Spirit" (P
with the mysticism of the Eurasian 'collectivist' spirit" (p. 54). Considering transcul- ture's desire to transcend politics, and also Epstein's argument for "utopianism after utopia" and "non-totalitarian totality," this particular historical (and ideological) con- text really needs to be addressed. Eliot Borenstein New York University Virgil Krapauskas, Nationalism and Historiography: The Case of Nineteenth Century Lithuanian Historicism. Boulder, CO: East European Monographs, 2000. viii, 234 pp. Distributed by Columbia University Press, New York. Krapauskas' book-length historiographical essay*fills an essential spot in the cor- pus of Lithuanian historical writing. The appearance of ethnic nationalism in East Central Europe in the nineteenth century would change the politieal landscape in the twentieth. Krapauskas traces the appearance of this brand of identity formation in the historical works - professional, joumälistic and dilettante - in Lithuania during the century leading to independence in 1918. Krapauskas' monograph is solid despite persistent problems with intent and the- ory. Thus, he writes, "Historicism mediated between the prejudices of nationalism and the dispassion of historical research," using Maurice Mandelbaum's definition of his- toricism that an event could only be understood "in terms of the place it occupied and the role it played within a process of development." Presumably, Krapauskas' mono- graph should then trace this approach to history in nineteenth century Lithuania. It does not do so, except tangentially. Nationalism and Historiography is about the de- velopment of Lithuanian historical writing as part of the Lithuanian national awaken- ing. Krapauskas' approach, not his subject matter, may be historicist. Nationalism and Historiography is also conceptually tentative. -
Kauno Gyventojų Aplinkos Ir Sveikatos Pilotinis Tyrimas
The Political and Social Consequences of Romas Kalanta's
A Death Transformed: The Political and Social Consequences of Romas Kalanta’s Self Immolation, Soviet Lithuania, 1972 Amanda Jeanne Swain A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2013 Reading Committee: Glennys Young, Chair James Felak Guntis Smidchens Program Authorized to Offer Degree: History © Copyright 2013 Amanda Jeanne Swain University of Washington Abstract A Death Transformed: The Political and Social Consequences of Romas Kalanta’s Self Immolation, Soviet Lithuania, 1972 Amanda Jeanne Swain Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Glennys Young History “A Death Transformed: The Political and Social Consequences of Romas Kalanta’s Self- Immolation, Soviet Lithuania, 1972” explores Soviet and post-Soviet interpretive narratives and political practices in response to two days of street demonstrations that followed the 1972 suicide of a nineteen-year-old man in Soviet Lithuania. My analysis reveals that Communist authorities and participating youth viewed the demonstrations as a struggle over the acceptable boundaries and content of modern Soviet youth culture. Despite extensive evidence that by 1972 youth were actively negotiating the boundaries of what were acceptable activities, Communist authorities and young people operated within an ideological framework that denied young people’s capacity to express discontent with the Soviet system. In post-Communist Lithuania, social and political elites constructed narratives of May 1972 that reclaimed agency by representing the demonstrations alternatively as nationalist dissent, civil resistance or Sixties-style youth protest. The diversity of narratives reflected on-going debates about the nature of post-Communist Lithuanian identity. This work seeks to make significant contributions to the historiography of the Soviet Union and to scholarship on the politics of memory and European integration. -

The Company’s operations and their results were evidently adapted by the economic downturn in Lithuania and neigh bouring countries. Transit rail freight transported to the Kaliningrad Region decreased by more than 30 per cent; a fall in the production and sales volumes in Lithuanian companies (AB ORLEN Lietuva, AB Achema, AB Akmenės Cementas) resulted in a considerable loss of domestic freight. The freight flows were stabilised only in the second half of 2009 through close cooperation of our specialist staff with freight consignors and representatives of railway undertakings in other countries. However, modern technologies, effective management and the implemented system of risk management ensured steady operations of the Company even in the period of crisis. AB Lietuvos Geležinkeliai is a major transport company in Lithuania. The Company together with its daughter companies employ around 12,000 people. The Company produces approximately 1.3 per cent of the GDP and is one of the largest tax payers in Lithuania. About two thirds of the income of AB Lietuvos Geležinkeliai is generated from foreign customers. The Company focuses on the improvement in management and control by implementing information systems and modern management methods. -
