GRADUATE NUTRITION ORGANIZATION (GNO) Spring Human Sciences Day GNO participated in Human Sciences Day on January 30, 2019. Human Sciences Day is an event to let attendees to learn more about student resources and the opportunities in College of Human Sciences by interacting with student organizations. Texas Tech Move-In Week At the beginning of the fall semester, GNO participated in the Texas Tech Move-In week. Thirteen GNO members sorted cardboard, foam, plastic, and garbage to assist with the influx of incoming freshmen. Fundraising activities raise money that can go towards conferences and other activities. South Plains Food Bank Volunteering On November 23, 2019, GNO members volunteered at the South Plains Food Bank to sort cans. They had a great time giving back to the community during the Thanksgiving season!

2019 Annual Report: Department of Nutritional Sciences 35 DIETETIC INTERNSHIP The Nutritional Sciences Dietetic Internship is now reaching 4 cities in Texas: Lubbock, Amarillo, Midland/Odessa, and San Angelo. Of our rotating interns, 60% were hired for employment at one of the sites in which they rotated, spreading the TTU alumni about West Texas! Lubbock internship is partnering with 21 different rotation sites and a total of 45 preceptors. Amarillo internship is partnering with 15 different rotation sites and a total of 40 preceptors. Midland/Odessa internship is partnering with 13 different rotation sites and a total of 29 preceptors. The San Angelo internship is hosting 4 interns. There, NS is partnering with 10 different rotation sites and a total of 18 preceptors.

NS 4130 Healthy Seniors project was a partnership between the NS department and City of Lubbock Parks and Recreations, where Dr. Wilna Oldewage-Theron and Yasaman Jamshidi-Naeini reached out to almost 80 senior residents who were at increased risk of type 2 diabetes. This diabetes prevention program was a modified version of the National Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), adapted based on the needs and characteristics of the community of older adults in Lubbock. This program lasted for more than a year and included nine weekly sessions in groups of 5 to 10. In their groups, seniors received education and support in understanding basics of diabetes, and practiced lifestyle modifications in order to decrease their risk of developing diabetes or its long- term complications.

Tech Fun Days project, defined as the service-learning course “Field Work in Food and Nutrition”, was designed based on a collaboration between NS department and YWCA Y-Care afterschool program in Lubbock. In this community outreach, NS students were involved in the same project as an integrated aspect of the course and applied their knowledge and skills to a community-based nutrition education for elementary school children. Tech students, as the project implementers, taught and modeled positive body image, healthy eating, and healthy physical activity behaviors to more than 100 elementary school children attending the afterschool program.

US FOODS On May 21-22nd, 2019 the 39th Annual US Foods- Food & Nutrition Seminar was held. The seminar attracts Registered Dietitians and Certified Dietary Managers from all over Texas and Eastern New Mexico. Participants can earn up to 14 hours of continuing education hours as well as networking opportunities. This year we had over 80 attendees!

This year we partnered with the North Region of the Texas Association of Nutrition and Dietetics to have mini expo. Everyone enjoyed the expo and anticipate this to grow in the future.
