Being the granddaughter of a renowned freedom fighter of Rajasthan, a TAMRA PATRA awardee by late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, patriotism runs in my blood. Also, my father’s two younger brothers served in the Indian Army as doctors. I married the son of a warrior who fought two wars against Pakistan and one against China in 1960, 1961 and 1971. To add on to this glory my only daughter is married to a Major in the Indian Army who has served at Kargil, Siachen, Leh and Ladakh, who was also the part of UN Peacekeeping force in Alaska and later in Sudan. Independence Day is being celebrated as a national festival today but for me, it remains a part of my soul. The stories of patriotism that fascinated during my childhood, continue to be told by my father-in-law and son-in-law. After constantly hearing these heroic sagas from three generations, I request the new generation to serve for the country. I think the armed force personnel are the persons who keep us safe by serving at all the international borders, and hence deserve reverence. To summarize the above as quoted by George Bernard Shaw: “Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all others because you were born in it.
