BOTANICAL CORNWALL GROUP – MEETINGS 2014 (with fern interest) - www.botanicalcornwall.co.uk Walks start at 10am (unless stated) so try to get to the meeting place by 9.30am. They usually finish at around 4pm. Meetings are open to all and are free unless otherwise stated. You may want to bring hand-lens, notebooks and field guides, relevant OS 1:25000 maps and a GPS if you wish. Suitable clothing and footwear is recommended and bring a packed lunch. Meetings marked with a * are joint meetings with other recording groups – check each for details below. If weather warnings are in the forecast the meeting may be cancelled – contact the co-ordinator beforehand to check. Meetings in West Cornwall (vice-county 1) will be targeting sites of rare species where these have not been seen recently. Sunday 20th July - LANDULPH and CARGREEN – SX46. A walk alongside the Tamar estuary in SX4361 and SX4362 at Cargreen and Landulph, adding records to the 1km squares and searching for Sea Spleenwort (Asplenium marinum), and to check an old Brittle Bladder-fern (Cystopteris fragilis) record (could it have been C. diaphana?). Meet at Cargreen car park SX43566267. Tuesday 22nd July - GOSS MOOR and ST DENNIS JUNCTION - SW95 and SW96. Walk around part of Goss Moor NNR with wetland habitats, ponds and scrub. Species to look out for include Pillwort (Pilularia globulifera), Wavy St John’s-wort (Hypericum undulatum), Bladderwort (Utricularia australis) and Marsh Lousewort (Pedicularis palustris) and to try and locate previously recorded hybrids between Greater, Water, Field and Marsh Horsetail. Also a revisit to an on old railway junction area which has been good for a range of native and non-native species in the past. Meet at car park at Domellick, SW94205871. Wellies advised. Sunday 3rd August - RED MOOR - SX06. A walk around old tin-streaming areas with wetland habitats, ponds and scrub, and also a look at the granite tor of Helman Tor for Tunbridge Filmy-fern (Hymenophyllum tunbrigense). Meet at Helman Tor car park SX06206139. Wellies advised. Wednesday 10th September – BROWNGELLY DOWNS and PARK PIT old China clay works, BODMIN MOOR – SX17. Recording in under-recorded 1km squares SX1972 and SX2072, with a visit to Park Pit for Marsh Clubmoss (Lycopodiella inundata) and Stag’s-horn Clubmoss (Lycopodium clavatum). Meet at entrance to Park Pit SX18547125 (on the road north east of Colliford Dam). Wellies advised. BOOKING ESSENTIAL as we will be going into SWW property and they need a list of attendees prior to the visit. Tuesday 16th September - SIBLYBACK LAKE (RESERVOIR), BODMIN MOOR – SX27. Recording in under-recorded 1km squares SX2271, SX2371 and SX2471, with a walk around the reservoir and a chance to check the site of Beech Fern (Phegopteris connectilis) on Craddock Moor. Meet at Siblyback Lake (pay) car park SX23677078. Wellies advised.
