Abstract: This bachelor thesis aims to compare the novel The Cider House Rules, written by John Irving in 1985, and its film adaptation (Miramax, 1999). After a short introduction of the writer and his work, the thesis compares the most important differences between the story featured in the original and the adaptation. The main part of the thesis deals with changes made for individual characters in the context of limitations of film as medium. In chapter 5 the thesis aims to impartially refer to the controversial topic of abortions and how the question of abortions differs in the novel and in the film. Absorbing the Worlds of Others: Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s Adapted Screenplays By Laura Fryer Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of a PhD degree at De Montfort University, Leicester. Funded by Midlands 3 Cities and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. June 2020 i Abstract Despite being a prolific and well-decorated adapter and screenwriter, the screenplays of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala are largely overlooked in adaptation studies. This is likely, in part, because her life and career are characterised by the paradox of being an outsider on the inside: whether that be as a European writing in and about India, as a novelist in film or as a woman in industry. The aims of this thesis are threefold: to explore the reasons behind her neglect in criticism, to uncover her contributions to the film adaptations she worked on and to draw together the fields of screenwriting and adaptation studies. Surveying both existing academic studies in film history, screenwriting and adaptation in Chapter 1 -- as well as publicity materials in Chapter 2 -- reveals that screenwriting in general is on the periphery of considerations of film authorship. In Chapter 2, I employ Sandra Gilbert’s and Susan Gubar’s notions of ‘the madwoman in the attic’ and ‘the angel in the house’ to portrayals of screenwriters, arguing that Jhabvala purposely cultivates an impression of herself as the latter -- a submissive screenwriter, of no threat to patriarchal or directorial power -- to protect herself from any negative attention as the former. However, the archival materials examined in Chapter 3 which include screenplay drafts, reveal her to have made significant contributions to problem-solving, characterisation and tone. -

Department of Culture and Literature Faculty of Humanities Social Science and Education Uncovering the Obscene in Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita and John Irving’s The Hotel New Hampshire – A Critical Analysis of Cultural Divisions — Evita Lill Bergstad ENG-3992 Master’s thesis in English Literature May 2018 Abstract This thesis examines the obscene, particularly through three taboo motifs present in John Irving’s The Hotel New Hampshire, and Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita. I will explore the effect and treatment of issues like incest, rape, and sexual dissidence. Through this analysis of the obscene, I wish to illuminate that there exist inherent similarities between these novels in how the obscene is made conspicuous and is a crucial aspect of these works’ depictions of transgression, defiance, and morality. Bringing attention to this similarity is important because it embarks on a larger discussion about cultural divisions. As we shall see, there is overwhelming evidence that these novels have been divided into different categories on the cultural scale; Lolita has been received as and deemed a work of highbrow literature, whereas The Hotel New Hampshire is labelled a work of popular fiction. The main aim of this thesis, then, is to illustrate how different receptions and cultural classifications of these novels have led to biased readings of the obscene themes and language present in both works. This thesis attempts to disregard this cultural dichotomy, and treat these novels as culturally equal, in that it seeks to view their treatment of the obscene as equally significant. 1 John Irving a Jeho Tvorba
1 JOHN IRVING A JEHO TVORBA John Irving je americký autor románov, ktoré sa stali v Amerike 70. rokov 20. storočia bestsellermi. Jeho tvorba je zo značnej časti poznačená autobiografickými črtami, aj keď to autor nevysvetľuje ako autobiografiu, ale súčasť pisateľovej práce. V jednom z jeho rozhovorov nepopiera, že opisované udalosti sa skutočne stali - ide však o to, že nenástojí na pravdivosti faktov; on tie fakty len používa (McCaffery, 1982, s. 2). Ďalej vysvetlil, že by bolo určite neprimerané vidieť v jeho príbehoch autobiografické črty, aj keď mnohé miesta sám navštívil (Viedeň, Boston), sám sa venuje zápaseniu (Garp sa zaujíma o zápasenie), Garp, podobne ako aj sám autor, nepoznajú svojho otca a žijú len s matkou.1 Irving začal písať vo veku 26 rokov a dodnes napísal 14 románov, jeden scenár, a zbierky esejí a poviedok. Niektoré z jeho románov boli sfilmované2. Tento americký románopisec sa často vyjadruje k svojim obľúbeným autorom (Charles Dickens, Herman Melville, Kurt Vonnegut, John Updike, či Günter Grass). S niektorými autormi (Vonnegut, Grass) mal Irving priateľské vzťahy. Kurt Vonnegut bol okrem toho aj jeho učiteľom kreatívneho písania, a to počas svojho štúdia na vysokej škole. Práve táto záľuba vedie mnohých kritikov ku skúmaniu štýlu autora a hľadaniu podobných štylistických čŕt medzi Irvingom a spomínanými autormi. 1.1 Poetika Johna Irvinga John Irving patrí medzi tých autorov - románopiscov, ktorí sa pri písaní románu, podobne ako viktoriánski spisovatelia, zameriaval na vykreslenie postáv a zápletiek. Veď sám autor priznáva aj vlastnú náklonnosť k románu 19. storočia: keď som mal 14 alebo 15 rokov, čítaval som Charlesa Dickensa [...] to boli tie romány, ktoré ma priviedli k písaniu mojich vlastných. -

Professor of Mass Media Communication ABSTRACT: In an interview with John Irving, conducted via email in October 2008 for the Nashville Scene , Michael Ray Taylor asks the noted author questions about his current work, his literary legacy, the state of literature in America, and the value of Irving’s graduate training at the Iowa Writer’s Workshop. “If you are lucky enough to find a way of life you love,” John Irving once wrote, “you have to find the courage to live it.” And live it he has. The author of such best-selling novels as The World According to Garp , The Hotel New Hampshire , Cider House Rules , A Prayer for Owen Meany —not to mention his screenplay adaption of Cider House Rules , for which he received an Academy Award in 2000—has become, perhaps more than any living writer, the sort of Novelist for whom the term was always capitalized a hundred years ago: a crafter of rich, complex books that not only chronicle the lives of the people who populate them, but of a generation, specifically Americans who came of age in the 1960s and ‘70s.
