On Air & Online How Reliable Is Wisconsin Polling?

While nationwide polling was largely accurate in the 2016 presidential election, statewide polls overlooked many Wisconsinites who came out to vote for Trump. His victory here surprised those who had relied on the forecasting. Whether it’s accounting for the “shy” voter or weighting for education, polling in Wisconsin is being done differently in 2020. WPR’s Capitol Reporter Laurel White explains in this addition to our series Swing State: Stories of a Divided Wisconsin. Pictured: Voters stand in a blocks-long line in on April 7, 2020, during the primary election.

Behind The Scenes Journey To Understanding On "The Road To Higher Ground"

Dr. Jonathan Øverby has produced “The Road to Higher Ground” on WPR since 2007, playing “world music with African roots and more.” You’ll hear songs from many African traditions, and music from the African diaspora, but the way he brings the “and more” to his listeners is what makes “Higher Ground” different from other world music shows. “I’m always thinking how to bridge the next piece with the piece before it and spool everything musically. I link pieces so that they a musical topography,” Øverby explains. “The Road to Higher Ground” takes listeners on a journey designed to increase empathy and understanding.

Øverby has won multiple honors and awards, and has been invited to speak at musicology conferences around the world. He’s also WPR’s only Black executive producer. Tune into “The Road to Higher Ground” on WPR's NPR News & Music stations at 5 p.m. on Saturdays (except for in Milwaukee, where it starts at 7 p.m. on 90.7 FM). Øverby hopes more listeners will find his show in this new time slot, and that they’ll be drawn in by his wide-ranging palette. Read more about Øverby’s roots and musical journey here.
