On the one hand, we have Aleister Crowley, the self- proclaimed ‘Great Beast 666’ and ‘prophet of Thelema’, once branded by the tabloid newspapers of his day as ‘The Wickedest Man in the World’. On the other, we have peyote, the mescaline-containing psychedelic ‘Divine Cactus’, worshipped as a god and consumed as an intoxicating sacrament for millennia by a number of Mexican and Native American tribes. It is well known that Crowley was one of the first Europeans to experiment with peyote and that he used it in his magical ceremonies. Nevertheless, while a number of valuable academic studies have already been written about Crowley’s life, thought, influence, and magic, there are no works of scholarship which examine his relationship with peyote. The purpose of this thesis is to redress this situation by bringing together as much evidence as possible and exploring the following question: what role did peyote play in Aleister Crowley’s magick? As we shall see, he primarily used peyote to attain visionary contact with the spiritual entities that, according to him, oversaw his spiritual evolution and guided him through the development of Thelema, the new religious movement he founded in the first half of the twentieth century. The first chapter shall outline Crowley’s life and magick, particularly his ‘occult career’ and his early encounter with ceremonial drug use. The second shall provide an overview of the history of peyote, its discovery by modern science, and the reactions of the first Westerners to experience its remarkable effects. Crowley’s own experiments with peyote shall be outlined in the third chapter, while the fourth shall examine the particular forms of magic that he combined peyote with. In this role, Hirsig was Crowley’s right-hand woman during a formative period in the Thelemic movement, but her position shifted when Crowley found a new Scarlet Woman in 1924. Hirsig’s importance in Thelema gradually declined, and she distanced herself from the movement in the late 1920s. The article analyses Hirsig’s changing status in Thelema 1919–1930, proposing the term proximal authority as an auxiliary category to MaxWeber’s tripartite typology.Proximal authority is defined as authority ascribed to or enacted by a person based on their real or per- ceived relational closeness to a leader. He was worried about the feud which was then opposing the London members of the Second Order of the Golden Dawn (of whom he was one), and the head of the Order, S. L. MacGregor Mathers. The conflict, which was reaching its climax, would soon lead the Order to a schism, the first and most disruptive of a long series. In his letter, Yeats refers to Aleister Crowley, who was then siding with Mathers against the London members, as ‘a person of unspeakable life’1. When Yeats wrote his letter, Crowley was a young man of 25, and had as yet no public reputation of his own, either good or bad. The exact reason why Yeats (and probably other Second Order members) deemed his life to be so “unspeakable” has never been ascertained, although it had obviously something to do with a perceived immoral behaviour on Crowley’s part. The story might have ended there, with this obscure young man disap- pearing from history again, after having gained, as his only claim to fame, the dubious honour of a dismissive, contemptuous remark from a future Nobel Prize-winning poet.

    AHA! Die Zeitschrift 1 März 2011 Die Redaktion • Editorial Liebe Leser! AHA und MAGICKAL OBSERVER sind nun, im 23. AHA Jahrgang, untrennbar zusammengewachsen. Wir, die Redakteure, freuen uns darüber natürlich sehr. Auch, daß unser e-zine mittlerweile in einer Gesamtauflage von fast 25.000 Heften erschienen ist, macht uns stolz. Allein im letzten Jahr sind unsere Hefte fast 10.000 mal heruntergeladen worden. Das war für uns Grund genug, über ein paar zeitgemäße Veränderungen nachzudenken. Zum Einen geben wir unsere Hefte künftig unter dem bekannten Titel AHA – ZEITSCHRIFT heraus, und zwar zunächst mit zwei Serienausgaben pro Jahr, jeweils im Frühjahr und im Herbst. Dazu kommen in unregelmäßigen Abständen besondere Themenhefte, die im Umfang wesentlich erweitert werden. So planen wir für den Sommer 2011 die Herausgabe eines informativen Thelema- Themenheftes, das keine Fragen mehr offen läßt. Wer gerne grundlegende Artikel zu diesem Thema veröffentlichen möchte, kann uns gern seine Textvorschläge senden. Eine weitere Änderung betrifft den Inhalt unserer Serienhefte. Wir möchten in Zukunft gern etwas den Themenhorizont erweitern. Wir möchten Tagesgeschehen, Politik, Soziales, Kultur, Literatur, Musik usw. gern thematisch einbinden (z.B. mit Kolumnen, Buch- und CD Vorstellungen, Filmkritiken usw.), und zwar im Hinblick auf die thelemitische Willensethik.
