Many of these cases and outbreaks have been linked to poultry products as the source of contamination. Because of the significant impact these pathogens have on human health, they are direct targets for pathogen reduction programs at various points during poultry production. Pre-harvest control points are the most recent targets for pathogen control due to increasing costs, regulations and the presence of diseases such as Avian Influenza (AI) and Necrotic Enteritis (NE) caused by C. perfringens. Of particular interest are the specific biosecurity and management practices that influence the transmission of pathogens in the poultry production environment. This study aimed to determine which practices influenced the transmission of Salmonella, C. perfringens, and Campylobacter on commercial poultry farms. In addition, this study collected data on the presence of two novel C. perfringens genes (netB and tpeL) that produce toxins and are associated with the disease NE in poultry.

    9 Diseases and Parasites of Poultry The art and science of poultry disease control is as complex, variable, and confounded with as many apparently unrelated events as is the practice of human medicine. As more birds are grown in more con­ centrated areas and in tighter confinement, new disease problems appear and old ones sometimes reoccur. Fortunately, for the average poultryman, good management, the ability to detect disease or para­ site problems at an early stage, and the knowledge and judgment to know when and where to go for help when needed should make it possible for him or her to cope successfully with most disease and parasite problems. In this chapter an attempt will be made to present the causes of disease and the basic concepts of disease prevention and control along with examples of the most serious and prevalent poultry diseases. Disease is considered to be any deviation from a normal state of health. It can be caused by trauma or injury, nutrient deficiencies, microorganisms, such as protozoa, bacteria, mycoplasma, viruses, yeasts, and molds, internal and external parasites, behavioral and reproductive problems, and poisons. Almost all disease problems on poultry farms start from new poultry brought on the premises, con­ taminated premises from previous flocks, or lack of proper sanitation and other good management practices. 126 C. YAN GHAZIKHANIAN The Western Poultry Disease Conference is proud to present the 2004 WPDC Special Recognition Award to Dr. G. Yan Ghazikhanian. Galestan Yan Ghazikhanian was born in 1937 in Iran. He obtained his DVM from the University of Tehran, Iran, and was presented the Silver Coin Education Medallion by the Shah of Iran for being the top ranked veterinary graduate. He received his MS and PhD in Comparative Pathology from the University of California, Davis. Under the tutelage of Dr. R. Yamamoto, Yan researched Mycoplasma meleagridis and M. synoviae in turkeys. After finishing his PhD, he worked at USDA APHIS as a director of a mobile laboratory in the 1971-72 eradication of velogenic viscerotropic Newcastle Disease in Southern California. Since 1974 he has worked at Nicholas Turkey Breeding Farms (NTBF), starting as a field and research veterinarian. Currently, Yan is Vice-President and Director of Veterinary Medicine for the company. To everyone at NTBF, he is simply known as Dr. Yan. In his 25 years with NTBF, Yan has established himself as an expert on the diseases and management of turkeys. Many consider him to be “The Man” on just about anything dealing with turkeys. A few of the many accomplishments Yan has made while at NTBF include the eradication of M. meleagridis, M. synoviae, and Salmonella arizonae infections from turkey primary breeding stock. In addition, he continues to research the turkey musculoskeletal system. Yan’s work at NTBF has significantly impacted the improvement of the health and the economic production of turkeys throughout the world.

BELL Don Bell was born in Santa Ana, California, on 17th December 1933. He was raised on an egg ranch in Central California and attended Turlock High School. Don graduated from the University of California, Davis, with a BS degree in Poultry Science in 1955. He received an MS degree in Poultry Science from Colorado State University in 1972. Don was hired as a UC Poultry Farm Advisor for Orange County in 1958, and transferred to Riverside County in 1965. He was promoted to Poultry Specialist in 1983. Don, whose career is highlighted by numerous accomplishments and awards, retired in 2000. Don completed over 150 applied research projects, and published 11 refereed journal articles, 16 abstracts and 57 research reports. In addition, he is author or co-author of 3 book chapters, 318 trade journal articles, 160 county publications, 70 slide sets, 12 computer programs and thousands of newsletter articles. His greatest contribution has been in the area of extension education, primarily on management and nutrition of egg production pullets and laying hens. Don is currently the past-President of the Poultry Science Association (PSA). He was also associate editor of the PSA journal and a PSA director. Don has received numerous awards including the PSA Pfizer Extension Award, USDA Award for Superior Service, UC Distinguished Service Award, and the Pacific Egg and Poultry Association Person of the Year and the Poultry Scientist of the Year awards.

Frame, DVM, DACPV The 67th WPDC is honored to present the WPDC Special Recognition Award to Dr. David D. Frame. Dr. David Frame was born (in July 1955) and raised in Kearns, Utah. As a youth, Dave developed an interest in birds. Along with his dad, he designed an extensive breeding and growing program for exhibition chickens. Dave continues to be involved with judging of these birds at various county and state fairs. David graduated from Utah State University (USU) in 1980 with a B.S. in Animal Science. He was then accepted into the second class of veterinary students at Oregon State University (OSU). At that time, vet students had to spend over a year at Washington State University in Pullman, WA, to receive the necessary training in small animal medicine and surgery. In 1984, Dave received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from Oregon State University, and subsequently, completed the 2-year residency program in avian medicine at the University of California, Davis. Dave is grateful to be able to spend time with Dr. Art Bickford while based in the Turlock laboratory, as one of his current roles is Avian Veterinarian at USU’s Central Utah Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. Upon completion of his residency, Dave moved back to Utah and began his career as the Chief Veterinarian for Moroni Feed Company.
