Host Ramapo is the top seed in the tournament and will play the winner of the game between fourth seed Hunter (NY) College and fifth seeded .

The rest of the tournament is TBA Moravian clinched first place in the Commonwealth Conference Tournament with a doubleheader sweep of , 4-2 and 5-4. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first game in top of the first inning on a two-run home run by junior third baseman Janelle Brey (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) that scored sophomore shortstop Heather Bortz (Allentown, PA/ Parkland HS), who had singled. The homer was Brey’s sixth of the season. Moravian scored what was the winning run in the top of the third inning on an RBI-double by junior outfielder Melissa Soroka (Newton, NJ/Pope John XXIII HS), which scored Brey. The Greyhounds added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI-single by freshman catcher Kira Weller (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson West Lawn HS) that scored sophomore designated hitter Leah Holmes (Clarks Green, PA/Abington Heights HS). Moravian finished the game with nine hits including two each by Bortz and Brey. Freshman pitcher Meagan Hennessy (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Township HS) allowed two runs on six hits. She did not allow a walk, and Hennessy tied the school record for strikeouts in a game for the second time this season with 11 to run her single season school record to 128. Moravian took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the second game when sophomore outfielder Krissy Cianfichi (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks East HS) scored on a wild pitch. Albright tied the game with a run in the bottom of the third inning. The Greyhounds took the lead for good with two runs in the top of the fifth inning on a bases loaded walk by Brey that scored sophomore outfielder Stephanie Eddinger (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS) and Soroka being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, which scored Cianfichi. Moravian added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI-single by Bortz, which scored junior second baseman Megan Smith (Phillipsburg, NJ/Belvidere HS), and a sacrifice fly by Brey that plated Eddinger. Moravian had just six hits in the game with Bortz going three-for-four. Junior pitcher Donna Weiner (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park HS) improved to 13-4 on the season with the victory for the Greyhounds. Weiner allowed four runs, only two were earned, on five hits and two walks while fanning two.

The top seeded Greyhounds won a pair of games, defeating fourth seeded , 4-3 in 11 innings, and third seeded Messiah College, 6-0, to advance the 2003 Commonwealth Conference Tournament Championship hosted by . Juniata took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a Moravian error and held the lead until the fourth inning. In the bottom of the fourth, the Greyhounds tied the contest at 1-1 on a double by junior first baseman Jenn Hastings (Pottstown, PA/ Owen J. Roberts HS), a single by junior outfielder Jessica Esposito (Madison, NJ/ Madison HS) and a Juniata error. The game remained tied until the top of the eighth inning when the Eagles took a 2-1 lead. Moravian tied the contest in the bottom of the inning to stay alive. Hastings drew a one-out walk and was pinch run for by Eddinger. Weller singled to right field and an error allowed Eddinger to score the tying run. In the tenth inning, the two schools started using the international tiebreaker with a runner at second base to start the inning. Neither team scored in the tenth. The Eagles runner scored on an error in the top of the 11th inning to give Juniata a 3-2 lead. Moravian started the bottom of the 11th with Smith at second base. Smith moved to third on an infield bunt single by Cianfichi. Cianfichi ended up on second base on the play as Juniata thought she had been tagged out and did not finish the play. Bortz finished off the game with a bloop single down the left field line to score both runs for the 4-3 victory. Between the two teams, 24 runners were left on base, including 15 by Moravian with seven of those runners in scoring position. The Greyhounds also had a runner thrown out at the plate in the fourth inning. Moravian pounded out 14 hits in the game with Bortz leading the team with a 5-for-6 performance. Esposito, Weller and Brey each had two hits. Hennessy improved to 14-4 for the Greyhounds. Hennessy allowed three runs; just one was earned, on seven hits and three walks while tying the school record for strikeouts in a game for the third time this season with 11. Moravian scored the only run of the game against Messiah that Weiner needed in the bottom of the first inning. Bortz hit a one-out triple to right-center field and scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Brey. The Greyhounds scored four times in the bottom of the third inning. Soroka drove in Eddinger with a single down the left field line before Hastings hit a bases loaded double to left-center field to score Soroka, Brey and Holmes. Moravian added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI-single by Hastings that scored Brey. Moravian had seven hits in the game with two each from Soroka and Hastings. Weiner improved to 14-4 on the year with the victory. She allowed eight hits and a walk while striking out four.

Moravian won its third straight Commonwealth Conference Championship and earned its sixth consecutive trip to the NCAA Division III National Tournament with a 2-0 victory over Elizabethtown College in the title game of the 2003 Commonwealth Conference Tournament. Hennessy scattered two hits and allowed just two walks while striking out nine batters to improve to 15-5 in her debut season at Moravian. The shutout was Hennessy’s eighth of the season, tying Becky Stroup’s school record from 1999 and 2000, and Hennessy had a no-hitter going through the first 5 2/3 innings of the game. Moravian scored its only runs of the contest in the bottom of the fourth inning. Hastings doubled down the left field line with two outs to score Bortz, who had walked, and Soroka, who had reached on an error. The Greyhounds managed just four hits off Elizabethtown pitcher Michelle Morris, who was pitching her third game of the day after getting the second seeded Blue Jays to the championship game with a pair of wins in Saturday’s first two elimination games, with singles by Bortz, Soroka and Smith to go along with Hastings’ double. Moravian left three runners in scoring position in the game and also had a runner thrown out at the plate. Albright used five unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh inning including a grand slam by senior Matt Slivinski to defeat Moravian, 12-6, in the first round of the 2003 Commonwealth Conference Baseball Tournament. Moravian, making its first postseason appearance since 1992, took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Junior outfielder Greg Peters (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley HS) drew a walk with two outs and moved to second on a wild pitch. Peters would score on a single to left center field by junior outfielder Ethan Ordog (Roebling, NJ/Holy Cross HS). Albright took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning off Moravian staring pitcher Brett Porter (Florham Park, NJ/ Hanover Park HS). The Greyhounds would take a 5-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Freshman third baseman Mike Sofka (Westfield, NJ/Westfield HS) led off the inning with a solo home run to left field, his second dinger of the year. Junior second baseman Matthew Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst HS) hit a two-RBI single to score freshman catcher Adam White (Bernville, PA/Tulpehocken HS), who had singled, and senior shortstop Luke Bricker (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown HS), who had reached on an error. Sophomore outfielder Chris Clancy (Kendall Park, NJ/ Bishop George Ahr HS) drove in Turtell with an infield grounder. The Lions would tie the game in the bottom of the fifth inning on a three-run home run to right centerfield. Moravian got the lead back in the top of the sixth inning when Ordog led off with a single. Sophomore Adam Goetz (Dunellen, NJ/Rutgers Prep HS) pinch ran for Ordog and scored on an error on a ball hit by Bricker. In Albright’s seventh inning, the Lions scored five times to take an 11-6 lead. Bricker allowed all five runs, which were unearned, in the inning as Moravian’s third pitcher of the contest. The Lions added a run in the bottom of the eighth off of Moravian senior Bob Frey (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley HS), the Greyhounds’ fourth pitcher of the game. Moravian had eight hits in the contest with Ordog and Turtell each collecting two hits. Porter allowed five runs on seven hits and a walk in 4 1/3 innings while fanning four. Sophomore Andrew Wach (Boonton, NJ/Boonton HS) tossed 1 2/3 innings, allowing a run on three hits and a walk. Bricker was touched for five unearned runs on two hits with one strikeout. Frey allowed a run on a hit and a walk.

The Greyhounds, the third seed, were knocked out of the 2003 Commonwealth Conference Tournament by a 4-3, ten-inning loss to top seeded Elizabethtown College at Owls Field in West Lawn. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI-single by Sofka, which scored Ordog, who had reached base after being hit by a pitch. The Blue Jays tied the game with a single run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Moravian took a 3-1 lead in the top of the tenth inning when Sofka hit another RBI-single, this time scoring Clancy, who had been hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Peters, who walked, scored on a balk. However, Elizabethtown scored three times in the bottom of the tenth for the victory with the final runs coming off a Moravian error in the outfield. The Greyhounds had just four hits in the game, two singles by Sofka, a double by Frey and a single by Bricker. Clancy went the distance on the mound, allowing four runs, only three earned, on 11 hits and three walks while fanning eight.

Golf – 3-2 (MAC 2-2) Season Complete Three members of the Moravian College golf team have been named to the All-Middle Atlantic Conference Teams for top 20 finishes at the 2003 MAC Championships played at Shawnee Country Club April 26th and 27th. Mora- vian had a team score of 961 in the two-day, 54-hole tournament to finish in third place. Freshman Dustin McCormick (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg HS) earned First Team All-Conference Honors with a score of 235, which tied him for sixth place. McCormick had rounds of 75, 80 and 80 on the par-72 course at Shawnee. Juniors Jamison Licausi (Tobyhanna, PA/Pocono Mountain HS) and Brian Kurylo (Sparta, NJ/Sparta HS) each earned Second Team All-Conference accolades with finishes in the second 20. Licausi tied for 13th with a score of 239 and Kurylo was tied for 17th at 241. Licausi was a member of the All-Conference First Team in 2002 while Kurylo has been on the Second Team the last two years.

Next Meet – Mon., May 12th at Jim Tuppeny Twilight Meet at , Philadelphia, PA Freshman Erica Angell (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill HS) placed third in the 10,000 meters with a time of 40:46.72 to lead Moravian to a team standing of second place after the first day of the 2003 Middle Atlantic Conference Championships hosted by Widener University. Sophomore Chelsea Mullins (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe HS) placed fourth in 41:00.34 while senior Jennifer Wagner (Riegelsville, PA/Wilson HS) placed sixth in 41:26.86. Junior Angie Morgan (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) finished ninth in 43:46.95 and sophomore Kim Bushner (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) was tenth in 44:10.40. In the first day of the heptathlon, junior Nicole Sabaliauskas (Butler, NJ/Butler HS) earned 528 points with a fourth place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 29.35 seconds, 535 points for a first place showing in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.56 seconds, 449 points with a fourth place in the high jump at 1.34 meters (four feet, 4 ¾ inches) and 470 points in the shot put with a second place toss of 9.09 meters (29 feet, ten inches). Sophomore Ann Guzevich (Kenilworth, NJ/David Brearley Regional HS) earned 587 points for placing second in the 200-meter dash in 28.57 seconds, 306 points for a sixth place finish in the 100-meter hurdles in 19.95 seconds, 359 points for a sixth place in the high jump at 1.25 meters (four feet, 1 ¼ inches) and 443 points with a third place finish in the shot put at 8.68 meters (28 feet, 5 ¾ inches). Junior Christina Scherwin (Copenhagen, Denmark) won a pair of individual championships and sophomore Kirsten Rotzell (Bangor, PA/Bangor HS) also won an individual title to lead Moravian on the second day of the 2003 MAC Championships. The Greyhounds were in first place of ten teams that have scored with 88 points.Scherwin captured the shot put in a MAC record and NCAA Division III automatic qualifying distance of 14.31 meters (46 feet, 11 1/2 inches), and she won first in the discus with an NCAA provisional qualifying toss of 42.56 meters (142 feet, 11 ¼ inches). Scherwin’s distance broke the Moravian record and is just the second time ever that she has competed in the discus. Rotzell captured the title in the triple jump with a leap of 11.60 meters (38 feet, ¾ inches). Freshman Lynsey Boggess (Washington Township, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy HS) took second in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.54 meters (five feet, one inch) while senior Amanda Wynn (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley HS) finished third in the pole vault at 3.04 meters (ten feet). Freshman Rebecca Moore (Easton, PA/Easton HS) was sixth in the pole vault with a height of 2.74 meters (nine feet). Junior Alicia Fowler (Easton, PA/Easton HS) placed sixth in the discus with a toss of 31.88 meters (104 feet, 7 ½ inches) while sophomore Julie Anderson (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) was seventh at 31.22 meters (102 feet, 5 ½ inches).In running events, Angell finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:53.58 while freshman Alexis Vergalla (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees HS) placed sixth in 12:42.58 and freshman Lauren Bahnatka (West Chester, PA/ Henderson HS) was seventh in 12:43.56. In the second day of the heptathlon, Sabaliauskas finished third with 3,243 points while Guzevich placed fifth with 2,735 points. In the second half of the competition, Sabaliauskas earned 483 points for a sixth place finish in the 800 meters in 2:48.14, 355 points with a fourth place leap of 4.20 meters (13 feet, 9 ¼ inches) in the long jump and 423 points for a second place finish in the javelin with a toss of 27.18 meters (89 feet, two inches). Guzevich garnered 563 points in the 800 meters with a fourth place finish in 2:40.89, 237 points for a seventh place jump of 3.68 meters (12 feet, ¾ inch) in the long jump and 240 points with a sixth place finish in the javelin with a toss of 17.35 meters (56 feet, 11 ¼ inches). In preliminary events held on the second day of the championships, sophomore Heather McGarvie (Medford, NJ/Shawnee HS) placed first in the 800 meters with a time of 2:17.84 while freshman Stephanie Beitler (Fogelsville, PA/Northwestern Lehigh HS) was sixth in 2:24.34 to advance to the finals. Sophomore Kellie Smith (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge HS) finished 18th in the 800 meters in 2:39.45. Rotzell was third in the 100-meter dash in 12.66 seconds, and she placed ninth in the 200-meter dash in a time of 26.47 seconds. Moore was seventh in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:07.64 while sophomore Margaret Benny (Tamaqua, PA/ Tamaqua HS) took fourth in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 16.59 seconds. Scherwin and Rotzell each won individual titles on the final day of the 2003 MAC Championships to lead the Greyhounds to their 11th consecutive MAC Team Championship. Moravian won the team title with 158 points, 34 points ahead of runner-up Messiah College. Scherwin won her third title of the meet and defended her championship in the javelin with an NCAA Division III automatic qualifying toss of 49.24 meters (161 feet, six inches) while Rotzell captured her second championship of the meet with an NCAA provisional qualifying leap of 5.50 meters (18 feet, 1/2 inch) in the long jump. Rotzell also placed fourth in the 100-meter dash in 12.76 seconds. Moravian head coach Doug Pollard was named the 2003 MAC Coach of the Year. In other field events on the final day of the three day meet, Anderson placed third in the hammer throw with a toss of 35.52 meters (116 feet, six inches) while Fowler was eighth at 30.69 meters (100 feet, eight inches) and freshman Bryn Lipovsky (Danville, PA/Bloomsburg HS) placed 15th with a distance of 23.78 meters (78 feet, 1/4 inch).On the track, McGarvie to second place in both the 800 meters with a time of 2:19.32 and the 1,500 meters in 4:44.82. Beitler ran to a time of 2:23.40 in the 800 meters for a fifth place finish while Mullins placed seventh in the 5,000 meters with a time of 19:28.84. Benny placed third in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.03 seconds while Moore finished second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:06.43. Moravian’s 4x100-meter relay team of Benny, Moore, Sabaliauskas and Boggess placed seventh in 52.43 seconds. Next Meet – Mon., May 12th at Jim Tuppeny Twilight Meet at Villanova University, Philadelphia, PA Freshman William Shimer (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) placed eighth in the 10,000 meters in a time of 34:52.98 to score Moravian’s only point on the first day of the 2003 Middle Atlantic Conference Championships hosted by Widener University. Junior Marty Miller (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) placed 12th in the 10,000 with a time of 36:26.86. In the first day of the decathlon, senior Eric Paul (Reading, PA/Reading Central Catholic HS) earned 651 points with a sixth place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.00 seconds, 671 points for a sixth place finish in the 400-meter dash in a time of 53.24 seconds, 552 points for tying for sixth in the high jump with a leap of 1.71 meters (five feet, 7 ¼ inches), 451 points for a seventh place finish in the long jump with a leap of 5.35 meters (17 feet, 6 ¾ inches) and 504 points for a fourth place showing in the shot put with a toss of 10.31 meters (33 feet, ten inches). Sophomore Dan Corey (Fair Lawn, NJ/Glen Rock HS) earned 591 points with a ninth place in the 100-meter dash, 528 points for finishing eighth in the high jump at 1.68 meters (five feet, six inches), 319 points for an 11th place leap of 4.66 meters (15 feet, 3 ½ inches) in the long jump and 493 points for a seventh place in the shot put at 10.12 meters (33 feet, 2 ½ inches). Freshman Michael El Kazzaz (Easton, PA/Easton HS) had Moravian’s best finish on the second day of the 2003 MAC Championships with a fourth place finish in the pole vault, clearing 4.03 meters (13 feet, three inches). Freshman Casey Hoffman (Kempton, PA/Northwestern Lehigh HS) finished eighth in the event with a height of 3.88 meters (12 feet, nine inches). Junior John Lesoine (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg HS) placed fifth in the shot put with toss of 12.42 meters (40 feet, nine inches) while sophomore Mike Lesoine (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg HS) finished fifth in the discus with a throw of 38.97 meters (127 feet, 10 1/2 inches). Freshman Russell Zaleski (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough HS) placed 11th in the 3,000- meter steeplechase with a time of 10:59.98. Moravian was in seventh place of nine schools that had scored points with 19.5 points. In the decathlon, Paul placed fourth with 5,376 points. In the final five events, Paul earned 671 points for a second place finish in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:41.42, 526 points with a fifth place in the 110-meter hurdles in 17.98 seconds, 406 points for clearing 3.20 meters (ten feet, six inches) in the pole vault and tying for fourth, 538 points for a third place finish in the discus at 33.73 meters (110 feet, eight inches) and 406 points for a sixth place in the javelin at 37.52 meters (123 feet, one inch). In prelimi- nary events held on the second day of the meet, junior Joe Moore (Andover, NJ/Newton HS) finished first in the 100-meter dash in 11.06 seconds and first in the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.02 seconds. Sophomore Jed Warsager (Andover, NJ/Newton HS) was second in the 100-meter dash in 11.09 seconds while sophomore Scott Silvoy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) was second in the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.32 seconds and second in the 400-meter dash in 49.78 seconds. Freshman Grant Curry (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra HS) placed fifth in the 100-meter dash in 11.27 seconds and eighth in the 200-meter dash in 22.86. Fresh- man John Paul Krupka (Ashley, PA/Hanover HS) was tenth in the 400-meters dash in 52.58 seconds. John Lesoine won the hammer throw and Warsager captured the 100-meter dash title to lead Moravian to a fifth place finish at the 2003 MAC Championships. The Greyhounds posted a team score of 59 ½ points in the meet. John Lesoine had a toss of 48.96 meters (160 feet, seven inches) to win the hammer while Warsager had a time of 11.21 seconds to win his championship. In other running events on the third and final day of the MAC meet, Silvoy placed second in the 200-meter dash in 22.45 seconds, and he was third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.47 seconds. Freshman Greg Rarick (Drums, PA/ Hazleton HS) placed ninth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:08.96 while junior Sean McDonnell (Scranton, PA/Scranton Prep HS) was 19th in 4:16.56. Senior Matt Bowers (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona HS) was third in the hammer throw with a toss of 46.38 meters (153 feet, seven inches) while junior Scott Williams (Bangor, PA/Bangor HS) placed 15th at 32.13 meters (105 feet, five inches) and sophomore Shawn Nelson (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) finished 23rd with a distance of 29.68 meters (97 feet, four inches). Curry took ninth in the long jump with a leap of 6.13 meters (20 feet, 1 ½ inches) while Moore placed tenth at 6.11 meters (20 feet, ½ inch).

Men’s Tennis – 7-8 (MAC Commonwealth 5-2, MAC 6-6) Season Complete Junior Jason Toedter (Easton, PA/Easton HS) and senior David Kurvink (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) of the Moravian College men’s tennis team have been named to the 2003 All-Commonwealth Conference First Team while senior Todd Edwards (Conyngham, PA/Hazleton HS) earned a spot on the All-Conference Second Team announced last Monday. Toedter was honored for the third straight year, and he has been on the First Team all three seasons. Toedter, a former Commonwealth Rookie of the Year, posted a 15-2 singles record for the Greyhounds as their number one player. Toedter was seeded first in the 2003 Middle Atlantic Conference Individual Championships and reached the quarterfinals before being knocked out. Toedter has a career record of 37-14 at Moravian. Kurvink was also honored on the First Team for the third time in his career. He was on the All-Conference First Team as a freshman and sophomore. Kurvink posted a 15-2 singles record as Moravian’s number two singles player, and he finished his career with a 50-17-1 record, becoming the first player in Moravian history to earn 50 singles wins. Kurvink, who was seeded sixth in the 2003 MAC Individual Championships and reached the quarterfinals, was also 10-4 at second doubles with three different players. Edwards was honored by the conference for the first time in his career. Edwards posted a 10-5 singles mark from the third position in the line-up, and he finished his career with a 31-25 slate. Edwards and Toedter combined for an 8-6 record as Moravian’s top doubles team.
