Greyhound Weekly Update, May 5, 2003 (-2222-) Softball – 29-8 (Commonwealth Conference 11-3, MAC 16-3) – Commonwealth Conference Champions Last Week – Defeated *Albright, 4-2 & 5-4; Defeated ^Juniata, 4-3 (11 innings); Defeated ^Messiah, 6-0; Defeated ^Elizabethtown, 2-0. *Commonwealth Conference game; ^Commonwealth Conference Tournament This Week – Fri., May 9th vs. #6 US Merchant Marine Academy in NCAA Regional at Ramapo College, Mahwah, NJ. The rest of the tournament is TBA Moravian clinched first place in the Commonwealth Conference Tournament with a doubleheader sweep of Albright College, 4-2 and 5-4. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first game in top of the first inning on a two-run home run by junior third baseman Janelle Brey (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) that scored sophomore shortstop Heather Bortz (Allentown, PA/ Parkland HS), who had singled. The homer was Brey’s sixth of the season. Moravian scored what was the winning run in the top of the third inning on an RBI-double by junior outfielder Melissa Soroka (Newton, NJ/Pope John XXIII HS), which scored Brey. The Greyhounds added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI-single by freshman catcher Kira Weller (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson West Lawn HS) that scored sophomore designated hitter Leah Holmes (Clarks Green, PA/Abington Heights HS). Moravian finished the game with nine hits including two each by Bortz and Brey. Freshman pitcher Meagan Hennessy (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Township HS) allowed two runs on six hits. She did not allow a walk, and Hennessy tied the school record for strikeouts in a game for the second time this season with 11 to run her single season school record to 128. Moravian took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the second game when sophomore outfielder Krissy Cianfichi (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks East HS) scored on a wild pitch. Albright tied the game with a run in the bottom of the third inning. The Greyhounds took the lead for good with two runs in the top of the fifth inning on a bases loaded walk by Brey that scored sophomore outfielder Stephanie Eddinger (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS) and Soroka being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, which scored Cianfichi. Moravian added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI-single by Bortz, which scored junior second baseman Megan Smith (Phillipsburg, NJ/Belvidere HS), and a sacrifice fly by Brey that plated Eddinger. Moravian had just six hits in the game with Bortz going three-for-four. Junior pitcher Donna Weiner (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park HS) improved to 13-4 on the season with the victory for the Greyhounds. Weiner allowed four runs, only two were earned, on five hits and two walks while fanning two. The top seeded Greyhounds won a pair of games, defeating fourth seeded Juniata College, 4-3 in 11 innings, and third seeded Messiah College, 6-0, to advance the 2003 Commonwealth Conference Tournament Championship hosted by Lebanon Valley College. Juniata took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a Moravian error and held the lead until the fourth inning. In the bottom of the fourth, the Greyhounds tied the contest at 1-1 on a double by junior first baseman Jenn Hastings (Pottstown, PA/ Owen J. Roberts HS), a single by junior outfielder Jessica Esposito (Madison, NJ/ Madison HS) and a Juniata error. The game remained tied until the top of the eighth inning when the Eagles took a 2-1 lead. Moravian tied the contest in the bottom of the inning to stay alive. Hastings drew a one-out walk and was pinch run for by Eddinger. Weller singled to right field and an error allowed Eddinger to score the tying run. In the tenth inning, the two schools started using the international tiebreaker with a runner at second base to start the inning. Neither team scored in the tenth. The Eagles runner scored on an error in the top of the 11th inning to give Juniata a 3-2 lead. Moravian started the bottom of the 11th with Smith at second base. Smith moved to third on an infield bunt single by Cianfichi. Cianfichi ended up on second base on the play as Juniata thought she had been tagged out and did not finish the play. Bortz finished off the game with a bloop single down the left field line to score both runs for the 4-3 victory. Between the two teams, 24 runners were left on base, including 15 by Moravian with seven of those runners in scoring position. The Greyhounds also had a runner thrown out at the plate in the fourth inning. Moravian pounded out 14 hits in the game with Bortz leading the team with a 5-for-6 performance. Esposito, Weller and Brey each had two hits. Hennessy improved to 14-4 for the Greyhounds. Hennessy allowed three runs; just one was earned, on seven hits and three walks while tying the school record for strikeouts in a game for the third time this season with 11. Moravian scored the only run of the game against Messiah that Weiner needed in the bottom of the first inning. Bortz hit a one-out triple to right-center field and scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Brey. The Greyhounds scored four times in the bottom of the third inning. Soroka drove in Eddinger with a single down the left field line before Hastings hit a bases loaded double to left-center field to score Soroka, Brey and Holmes. Moravian added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI-single by Hastings that scored Brey. Moravian had seven hits in the game with two each from Soroka and Hastings. Weiner improved to 14-4 on the year with the victory. She allowed eight hits and a walk while striking out four. Moravian won its third straight Commonwealth Conference Championship and earned its sixth consecutive trip to the NCAA Division III National Tournament with a 2-0 victory over Elizabethtown College in the title game of the 2003 Commonwealth Conference Tournament. Hennessy scattered two hits and allowed just two walks while striking out nine batters to improve to 15-5 in her debut season at Moravian. The shutout was Hennessy’s eighth of the season, tying Becky Stroup’s school record from 1999 and 2000, and Hennessy had a no-hitter going through the first 5 2/3 innings of the game. Moravian scored its only runs of the contest in the bottom of the fourth inning. Hastings doubled down the left field line with two outs to score Bortz, who had walked, and Soroka, who had reached on an error. The Greyhounds managed just four hits off Elizabethtown pitcher Michelle Morris, who was pitching her third game of the day after getting the second seeded Blue Jays to the championship game with a pair of wins in Saturday’s first two elimination games, with singles by Bortz, Soroka and Smith to go along with Hastings’ double. Moravian left three runners in scoring position in the game and also had a runner thrown out at the plate.
