We received the first cal- endar from Larry Lester, Dick Clark, Wayne Stivers, and others who helped 1227 Washington St. NE Minneapolis, MN 55413 • telephone: 612-325-7815 • johndonaldson.bravehost.com PAGE 1 compile the first draft of the NNL (Negro National League) games, and we’ve continued to fill in that calendar between those NNL games to at- tempt to tell the Kansas City Monarchs story as well as the John Donaldson story. The stories between those NNL games were often fascinating, too, so we are attempting to fill in every date on the calendar with either a game or a report stating the game was rained out. What we have found in towns around Kansas City, St. Louis, Chicago, and every other city hosting an NNL team is that teams played in many of them to fill their schedules. We’ve found again and again every year these games were lucrative and the towns were often extremely welcoming to these teams each and every year. !June of 1923, listed above, is an example. Iola and Fort Scott, Kansas newspapers mention the games listed above, and while we do not believe that John Donaldson played for the Monarchs during that time, he was listed in reserves for that year, and has been found playing for J.L. Wilkin- son’s Monarchs “farm leagues” which included the world-famous All Na- tions baseball team. One official letter for the All Nations lists John Donald- son as the manager in 1923. !We do find Donaldson showed up in Kansas City for one weekend in June of 1923. Our interest in the Monarchs therefore includes not only where John Donaldson was during the Monarchs years, but where he wasn’t, and in eliminating him from games in 1923, we found him visiting “the boys” during one weekend in June! 1227 Washington St. NE Minneapolis, MN 55413 • telephone: 612-325-7815 • johndonaldson.bravehost.com PAGE 2 The Iola Daily Register, Iola, KS Saturday Evening, June 16, 1923 Page 5, Column 8 !The Monarchs and the All Nations before them had a long history in the area. George Sweatt was born in Humboldt, Kansas (as was Walter Johnson, the teams played on Walter Johnson field). By at least 1925, the Monarchs and the All Nations had become such drawing cards in the area, they played each other to local crowds. 1227 Washington St. NE Minneapolis, MN 55413 • telephone: 612-325-7815 • johndonaldson.bravehost.com PAGE 3 1227 Washington St. NE Minneapolis, MN 55413 • telephone: 612-325-7815 • johndonaldson.bravehost.com PAGE 4 1227 Washington St. NE Minneapolis, MN 55413 • telephone: 612-325-7815 • johndonaldson.bravehost.com PAGE 5 1227 Washington St. NE Minneapolis, MN 55413 • telephone: 612-325-7815 • johndonaldson.bravehost.com PAGE 6 The Iola Daily Register, Iola, KS Saturday Evening, June 16, 1923, Page 6, Column 1 The Kansas City Sun, Kansas City, Missouri Saturday, June 2, 1923, Page 8, Columns 3 and 4 1227 Washington St. NE Minneapolis, MN 55413 • telephone: 612-325-7815 • johndonaldson.bravehost.com PAGE 7 1227 Washington St. NE Minneapolis, MN 55413 • telephone: 612-325-7815 • johndonaldson.bravehost.com PAGE 8 1227 Washington St. NE Minneapolis, MN 55413 • telephone: 612-325-7815 • johndonaldson.bravehost.com PAGE 9 1227 Washington St. NE Minneapolis, MN 55413 • telephone: 612-325-7815 • johndonaldson.bravehost.com PAGE 10 The Kansas City Sun, Kansas City, Missouri Saturday, June 2, 1923, Page 8, Columns 1 and 2 !The Kansas City Sun and the Kansas City Call both covered Mon- archs baseball in the 1920s. The Sun appears to have been on its way out in the 1920s, and the Call was on its way in as a Kansas City newspaper. !Both of them printed constant articles about and for the Monarchs. And J.L. Wilkinson owned and operated a printing company that made up printing blocks, produced photos, and acted as an alternative office to much of the Monarchs scheduling and logistics. Wilkinson and Q.J. Gil- more also wrote many articles during and between baseball seasons for both Kansas City Newspapers, which were likely picked up by other pa- pers across the country. 1227 Washington St. NE Minneapolis, MN 55413 • telephone: 612-325-7815 • johndonaldson.bravehost.com PAGE 11 The Kansas City Sun, Kansas City, Missouri Tuesday, June 5, 1923, Page 1, Column 5 !Newspaper photos are a valuable tool in identifying players. 1227 Washington St. NE Minneapolis, MN 55413 • telephone: 612-325-7815 • johndonaldson.bravehost.com PAGE 12 1227 Washington St. NE Minneapolis, MN 55413 • telephone: 612-325-7815 • johndonaldson.bravehost.com PAGE 13 1227 Washington St. NE Minneapolis, MN 55413 • telephone: 612-325-7815 • johndonaldson.bravehost.com PAGE 14 1227 Washington St. NE Minneapolis, MN 55413 • telephone: 612-325-7815 • johndonaldson.bravehost.com PAGE 15 The Kansas City Sun, Kansas City, Missouri Saturday, June 7, 1923, Page 8, Columns 1-3 !For the purposes of John Donaldson research, the article mentions that Sam Crawford left the Monarchs in early June to join Donaldson on the All Nations team. !Also for the purpose of tracking John Donaldson in and out of the Monarchs and All Nations team, the following article in the Kansas City Sun mentions Donaldson came in for the weekend, then returned for Fort Dodge to go back to the All Nations team. !Wade Johnson took Donaldson’s spot at Center Field for K.C. 1227 Washington St. NE Minneapolis, MN 55413 • telephone: 612-325-7815 • johndonaldson.bravehost.com PAGE 16 1227 Washington St. NE Minneapolis, MN 55413 • telephone: 612-325-7815 • johndonaldson.bravehost.com PAGE 17 1227 Washington St. NE Minneapolis, MN 55413 • telephone: 612-325-7815 • johndonaldson.bravehost.com PAGE 18 The Kansas City Sun, Kansas City, Missouri Saturday, June 9, 1923, Page 8, Columns 1-3 The Kansas City Sun, Kansas City, Missouri Saturday, June 9, 1923, Page 8, Columns 5-6 1227 Washington St. NE Minneapolis, MN 55413 • telephone: 612-325-7815 • johndonaldson.bravehost.com PAGE 19 1227 Washington St. NE Minneapolis, MN 55413 • telephone: 612-325-7815 • johndonaldson.bravehost.com PAGE 20 1227 Washington St. NE Minneapolis, MN 55413 • telephone: 612-325-7815 • johndonaldson.bravehost.com PAGE 21 The Kansas City Sun, Kansas City, Missouri Saturday, June 16, 1923, Page 8, Columns 1-4 !Getting organized into calendars means not just finding games, but finding rainouts, too. We’ve found that finding and accounting for every date on the calendar is extremely important, all year. For many players played in California, Florida, Texas, and other southern leagues. !The last article in the Kansas City Sun shows how the Monarchs played many of their games in-between the Negro League games with other Negro League teams. 1227 Washington St. NE Minneapolis, MN 55413 • telephone: 612-325-7815 • johndonaldson.bravehost.com PAGE 22 1227 Washington St. NE Minneapolis, MN 55413 • telephone: 612-325-7815 • johndonaldson.bravehost.com PAGE 23 1227 Washington St. NE Minneapolis, MN 55413 • telephone: 612-325-7815 • johndonaldson.bravehost.com PAGE 24 1227 Washington St. NE Minneapolis, MN 55413 • telephone: 612-325-7815 • johndonaldson.bravehost.com PAGE 25 The Kansas City Sun, Kansas City, Missouri Saturday, June 23, 1923, Page 8, Columns 1-2, 5-7 !By the looks of the calendar on page 1, there are obviously several places where we can look to fill in the June 1923 calendar. Starting with June 1 and 2, all Kansas City and Indianapolis newspapers need to be checked again for the week, as well as the previous week and the following week. The same goes for Milwaukee’s newspapers for the dates with the Milwaukee Bears. 1227 Washington St. NE Minneapolis, MN 55413 • telephone: 612-325-7815 • johndonaldson.bravehost.com PAGE 26 !Since the Monarchs and All Nations teams tended to play every day, there is a good possibility that the Monarchs played games somewhere be- tween Milwaukee and Kansas City on the 7th and 8th of June in 1923. Newspapers in Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri are the most likely places, and it is also likely that if these games exist they will be mentioned in the Mil- waukee or Kansas City newspapers around that time.
