Phylogenetic Relationships among European Polistes and the Evolution ofSocial Parasitism (Hymenoptera: Vespidae, Polistinae) James M. ABSTRACT Cladistic analysis of the European species ofPolistes is used to investigate the evolution .of social parasitism in the genus. The three species of social parasites (formerly the genus Sulcopolistes) are all inquilines: lacking a worker caste, and dependent on uSUIping the colony ofa host species to obtain a worker force. El:vlERY'S Rule states that social parasites are more closely related to their hosts than to any other species. Previously published allozyme (CARPENTER et aI., 1993) and mtDNA (CHOUDHARY et aI., 1994) data did not support this hypothesis, but did not resolve relationships among the species of social parasites. Morphological characters are adduced which resolve the phylogenetic relationships among these three species, and the combination of the morphological and molecular data sets largely resolves the relationships among all nine European species. Cladistic optimization oftraits associated with social parasitism on the resulting cladogram shows: (1) El:vlERy's'Rule is rejected; (2) the scenario proposed by TAYLOR (1939) for the evolution of social parasitism is not supported either. Severe brood care costs have favoured the evolution of cheaters that exploit the paren- tal services of conspecifics or even heterospecifics in both birds and social insects. In Polistes paper wasps, three species have lost worker castes and are dependent on hosts to produce their sexuals, while other species use hosts facultatively as an alternative to caring for their own brood. This paper offers an overview of the adaptations, strategies and tricks used by Polistes social parasites to successfully enter and exploit host social systems. Moreover, it also focuses on the analogous solutions adopted by the well-known brood parasite birds, and stresses the evolutionary convergence between these two phy- logenetically distant taxa. A comparative analysis of life-history patterns, as well as of phylogenetic relationships of living facultative and obligate parasitic species in Polistes wasps, has suggested a historical framework for the evolution of social parasitism in this group. As with avian brood parasites, the analysis of adaptation and counter adaptation dynamics should direct the future approach for the study of social parasitism in Polistes wasps. -

DEMOGRAPHIC HISTORY AND POPULATION STRUCTURE OF POLISTES FUSCATUS PAPER WASPS A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science by Sarah Elena Bluher August 2018 c 2018 Sarah Elena Bluher ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT Limited dispersal and cooperation are predicted to coevolve in cooperatively breeding systems [24, 33, 49, 50]. In Polistes paper wasps, mark-recapture stud- ies and genetic analyses have shown that both cooperative and solitary nesting gynes can exhibit natal philopatry [4, 18, 23, 31, 38]. Male dispersal has not been studied in Polistes, therefore the potential effects of sex-biased dispersal on population structure are unknown. In this study I used whole genome re- sequencing data from P. fuscatus wasps collected across the Eastern US to assess demographic history and population structure within a well-studied coopera- tively breeding system. In order to deduce the influence of sex-specific dispersal patterns on overall population structure, I analyzed population structure using nuclear as well as mitochondrial genomes. While low pairwise FST values in- dicated overall depressed levels of genetic differentiation, I found a consistent and significant pattern of spatial genetic clustering and isolation by distance in both the nuclear and mitochondrial genomes, supporting the hypothesis that limited female dispersal contributes towards population structure in P. fuscatus wasps. Among the numerous factors that contribute to the suc cess of social wasps, colony productivity is the most important and depends on ecological and environmental factors, such as the nest site. Consequently, nest-site choice should be determined by nest-site characteristics. The objective of this study was to determine on which species of plants Polistes gallicus wasps build their nests and identify the possible preferred features of plants used during nest-site selection by the foundress. From February to October 2017–2019 we recorded details of the nests in natural areas in south-western Spain (at 38° latitude). Nests of P. gallicus were recorded on 49 species of plants belonging to 23 families, with Scirpoides holoschoenus, Epilobium hirsutum and Foenicu- lum vulgare the most common. Signifi cantly more wasps built their nests on herbaceous than on shrub and arboreal plants, and on “green” than “brown-grey” plants. -

Aggregations formed on prominent vegetation, traditional lek-sites of Polistes males, and on buildings, which were later adopted as hibernating sites by future queens. First discovered by W.D. Hamilton, these aberrant aggregations are an overlooked phenomenon of the behavioral ecology of this intensively studied wasp. For 3 months in the summer of 2000, during the peak of colony development, we sampled 91 extranidal aggregations from seven areas, numbering 1322 wasps. These wasps were parasitized by both sexes of X. vesparum, but males were more frequent from July until mid-August, during the mating season of the parasite. Aggregations were present for days at the same sites (in one case a leaf was occupied for 36 consecutive days) and were characterized by extreme inactivity. After artificial infection, parasitized ‘‘workers’’ deserted the nest 1 week after emergence from their cell and before the extrusion of the parasite through the host cuticle. -

THE LIFE HISTORY OF POLISTES METRICUS SAY: A STUDY OF BEHAVIOR AND PARASITIC NATURAL ENEMIES by AMANDA COLEEN HODGES (Under the direction of KARL ESPELIE) ABSTRACT The ability to recognize nestmates is an integral component of eusocial insect societies. Cuticular hydrocarbon profiles are believed to be important in the recognition process and these profiles have been shown to differ by age for some Polistes species. The effects of age on nest and nestmate discrimination are examined for Polistes metricus Say (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) workers. Age affected nest discrimination. Older (10-day old) P. metricus workers spent significantly more time on their natal nest than than younger (3-day old) workers. However, nestmate discrimination did not occur for either younger or older P. metricus workers. The lack of nestmate discrimination exhibited by either age class of workers emphasizes the potential role of a social insect’s environment in the recognition process. Brood stealing, parasitism pressures, resource limitations, and other environmental factors are eliminated in a homogenous laboratory setting. Polistes wasps are considered beneficial generalist predators, and the majority of their prey consists of lepidopteran larvae. The prevalence and occurrence of parasitic natural enemies are reported for early-season collected colonies of P. metricus. The strepsipteran, Xenos peckii Kirby, the ichneumonid Pachysomoides fulvus Cresson, the pyralid Chalcoela pegasalis Walker, and the eulophid Elasmus polistis Burks were present in P. metricus colonies. Xenos infestations have previously been thought to be infrequent, but X. peckii was the most predominant parasite or parasitoid over a four-year period. POLISTES GALLICUS IN MASSACHUSETTS (HYMENOPTERA: VESPIDAE)* BY MARY A. HATHAWAY Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University Cambridge, Massachusetts 02138 USA INTRODUCTION Polistes gallicus (Linnaeus), a common and widespread paper wasp in the palearctic region, has been introduced into the United States in the Boston, Massachusets, area. During 1981 specimens were collected in Cambridge, Somerville, Belmont, and Newton, Massachusetts. P. gallicus was also collected in Cambridge in 1980, but was not seen in Belmont that year (R. J. McGinley, personal communication). Species identification was verified by Dr. Arnold S. Menke of the Systematic Entomology Laboratory of the United States Department of Agriculture. Presumably P. gallicus was only recently introduced; otherwise it would surely have been reported before this. It is a brightly colored and conspicuous wasp. The purpose of this paper is to report the introduction of Polistes gallicus. The biology of the species in the Old World is reviewed briefly, and some observations of the wasp in Massachusetts are reported. Information on how to recognize P. gallicus is also included. BIOLOGY OF POLISTES GALLICUS (LINNAEUS) Polistes gallicus is ubiquitous in the palearctic region, especially in the south. It is the most common Polistes in Spain (Giner Marl, 1945). The species' range extends north to Paris, but gallicus becomes rare in far northern France. It exists in warmer parts of Belgium and Germany, but does not occur in England, Denmark, or Scandinavia (Guiglia, 1972). Spradbury (1973) states that occasion- ally Polistes are introduced into the British Isles, but for some reason the genus is not able to sustain itself there. To the south, the range of P. -
