Annex 2: Additional Copy of Section B “Geological Heritage” of the Application Section B “Geological Heritage” GEOLOGICAL SUMMARY The Azores Archipelago is located in the North Atlantic, on the triple junction between the North American, Eurasian and African-Nubian plates. Volcanic and tectonic activities are well displayed in the geomorphology of the islands; the former includes 26 eruptions since the settlement, in early 15th century. The Azores Islands are formed by 16 major polygenetic volcanoes, most of them silicic and with summit subsidence calderas: nine of them are still active. Moreover, there are about 1750 monogenetic volcanoes in the archipelago, either dispersed along the flanks and inside the summit depression of the polygenetic volcanoes, either belonging to the 11 basaltic fissural volcanic systems located in different islands. These monogenetic centres include domes and coulées, tuff rings, tuff cones, maars, scoria and spatter cones, and eruptive fissures that together with other volcanic, tectonic, sedimentary, littoral and deep sea features may be considered as geosites and can embrace outstanding landscapes. B – Geological Heritage B1. Location of the proposed Geopark The Azores archipelago is located in the Atlantic Ocean, between the latitudes 36º56’ e 39º44’ North and the longitudes 24º47’ and 31º16’ West (Figure 5), and at the distance of 1815 km from the Mainland Portugal. ´ Figure 6 – General geodynamic framework of the Azores archipelago. From a geological point of view, all the Azores islands are of volcanic origin and are oceanic islands that emerged from the surrounding seafloor due to the progressively piled up of submarine volcanic products, a process that should have started about 36 million years (M.y.).

TERCEIRA ISLAND - The Lilac Island - Elliptic in shape, Terceira covers an area of 402 sq. km, is 29 km at its longest and 17.5 km at its widest. The island is a plateau, with the Serra do Cume to the east, the Serra do Labaçal in the centre (rising to 808m), and the Serra da Santa Bárbara (rising to 1,021m) to the west. Angra do Heroismo, with its origins in the late 15th century, has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a picture book town of imposing townhouses and cobbled streets seemingly untouched by time. The best views of this once prosperous trading centre are from Monte Brasil across the harbour. The west coast harbours a host of villages and the wilder, with volcanic caves which are a further invitation to discover the subterranean mysteries. Natal Caves and Algar do Carvão considered a geological Nature Reserve is formed by caves of up 100 metres in depth, with majestic stalactites and stalagmites and inner lake. Praia da Vitoria, to the east, with its sandy beach is a charming small town and, inland, the views from the 500m high point of the Serra do Cume, over the gigantic quilt made up of green pastures separated by black volcanic stone walls, quite breathtaking. Terceira caters to all interests from golf, exploring volcanoes, walking, swimming in natural rock pools and visiting the sixty-eight 19th century ‘Impérios’, (small chapels of the Holy Spirit), which are scattered throughout the island. Then there are the colourful festivals and street bullfights (they pad the bulls’ horns and bulls are never killed) where the only casualty is young men’s wounded pride.

This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution International License (CC BY). http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Abstract We present here evidence of pre-Portuguese presence in the Azores Islands, Portugal, found near the site of Grota do Medo (Posto Santo), discovered by Rodrigues (2013) in Terceira Island, Azores. This evidence was dated by Accelerator Mass Spectrometry, and indicates the presence of human activity in Terceira Island before or during the XIth century. The evidence consisted in a man-made rock basin, which was found in a site that contains also striking similarities with many other as- pects from ancient cultures, including other man-made rock basins, arrangements of large stones which resemble megalithic constructions, and inscriptions in stones which resemble ancient pe- troglyphs. Although the dating of this evidence is highly suggestive of the presence of human ac- tivity in the Azores Islands long before the arrival of the Portuguese navigators of the XVth century, there is no clear evidence which enables us to identify which specific culture may have existed in the Azores before the Portuguese arrival.

RECENT VOLCANISM ON TERCEIRA, AZORES A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Stephen Self December 1973 Geology Department, Imperial College, London, S.W.7. This thesis is dedicated to Col. Jose Agostinho. ABSTRACT: Terceira is one of the totally volcanic islands in the Azores, which straddle the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The island shows a great diversity of lavas and pyroclastics; it has been the site of a large number of effusive and explosive eruptions. There are four volcanoes forming the island. Three are composed of both basaltic and salic rocks and one has only salic types exposed. All the rocks are in the alkali olivine basalt suite. Since the early stages of the island there has been a range of compositions from alkali olivine basalt to comendite existing at one time. A 20,000 year old ignimbrite covers two-thirds of the island. Above this prominent horizon the products of over 100 eruptions have been recogw. nised. Most conspicuous are the comenditic ignimbrites (produced by pyroclastic flow eruptions), pumice-fall deposits and thick lava extrusions. Strombolian basaltic deposits and lavas are concentrated along the Fissure Zone which bisects the island diagonally from NW to SE. Crustal spreading on a small scale can be demonstrated along the Fissure Zone. The pumice•fall deposits are of the sub-plinian type which have mod- erate dispersal areas and often show internal stratification. The ignim- brites display a layering of grain-size which has been recognized in ignimbrites from other areas. There is a bimbdal population of rocks represented on the island.
