Nanoracks Signs Agreement with Canada’s Maritime Launch on Re- Use of C4M Upper Stages for In-Orbit Space Outposts October 24, 2019 – Washington, DC – Nanoracks, the world’s leading provider of commercial access to space, is pleased to announce that it has signed an agreement with Canada’s Maritime Launch Services to work on re-purposing and re-using spent C4M upper rocket vehicle stages, which would be in-orbit after launch missions from Nova Scotia’s Canso Spaceport, Canada’s first and only commercial spaceport. In 2018, Nanoracks was one of the awardees of a study contract by NASA to develop the future of commercial spaceflight in low-Earth orbit. Through that award, Nanoracks has been investigating the commercial case for repurposing in-space hardware, and this agreement with Maritime Launch further establishes the company’s commitment to innovating a more affordable and less-risky pathway to establishing in-space habitats (‘Outposts’) for future crewed missions, instead of fabricating modules on the ground, and subsequently launching them to orbit. “The proven heritage of the C4M launch family, with over 220 launches to date, will provide Nanoracks with plenty of opportunities to choose the appropriate missions on which to test and develop the proposed upper stage conversions into resilient automated habitats, and one day human habitats,” says Steve Matier, Maritime Launch CEO. “Canada has a reputation for providing in-space robotics for the International Space Station, such as the CANADARM and the Dextre programs. Bartoe and Thomas Holloway NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas, USA The first phase of the International Space Station construction has been completed, and research has begun. Russian, U.S., and Canadian hardware is on orbit, ard Italian logistics modules have visited often. With the delivery of the U.S. Laboratory, Destiny, significant research capability is in place, and dozens of U.S. and Russian experiments have been conducted. Crew members have been on orbit continuously since November 2000. Several "bumps in the road" have occurred along the way, and each has been systematically overcome. Enormous amounts of hardware and software are being developed by the International Space Station partners and participants around the world and are largely on schedule for launch. Significant progress has been made in the testing of completed elements at launch sites in the United States and Kazakhstan. Over 250,000 kg of flight hardware have been delivered to the Kennedy Space Center and integrated testing of several elements wired together has progressed extremely well. Mission control centers are fully functioning in Houston, Moscow, and Canada, and operations centers Darmstadt, Tsukuba, Turino, and Huntsville will be going on line as they are required. Extensive coordination efforts continue among the space agencies of the five partners and two participants, involving 16 nations. All of them continue to face their own challenges and have achieved significant successes. -

TESTIMONY A Leader’s Journey: From Iran Into Space Interview with Anousheh ANSARI, founder and chairman of Prodea Systems Anousheh Ansari has dreamed of travelling into the stars for as long as she can remember. In September 2006, she made this dream come true and became the first woman “space explorer”. Entrepreneur and business leader, Ansari was elected to the Forum of Young Global Leaders in 2007. The credo she lives by is form Gandhi and translates a distinct mindset: “Be the change you want to see in the world”. In this interview, Ansari shares her vision of global leadership. What do you consider the attributes of a global leader to be, and why do you define your- self as begin one of them? A global leader’s principal quality is a constant awareness that the world is far vaster than his or her local environment. People tend to restrict their viewpoint to routine activities and to information received that is primarily related to events that are close to home. As a result, people cannot help but develop biases. Any leader whose decisions will potentially have a global impact must repeatedly put him or herself in situations and positions that remind him that the world goes far beyond what is immediately perceptible to the eye. Personally, I travel very often, both for business and for pleasure, and I ensure that each trip is a learning opportunity. I was born in Iran and went to a French Catholic school. I thus became familiar with French and Canadian cultures—both of which are quite diffe- rent from my native culture—when I was quite young. -

Weibel Departments of Anthropology and Integrative, Religious, and Intercultural Studies, Grand Valley State University, Allendale, MI 49401, USA; [email protected] Received: 29 November 2019; Accepted: 28 December 2019; Published: 2 January 2020 Abstract: Human spaceflight is likely to change in character over the 21st century, shifting from a military/governmental enterprise to one that is more firmly tied to private industry, including businesses devoted to space tourism. For space tourism to become a reality, however, many obstacles have to be overcome, particularly those in finance, technology, and medicine. Ethnographic interviews with astronauts, engineers, NASA doctors, and NewSpace workers reveal that absolute faith in the eventual human occupation of space, based in religious conviction or taking secular forms, is a common source of motivation across different populations working to promote human spaceflight. This paper examines the way faith is expressed in these different contexts and its role in developing a future where space tourism may become commonplace. Introduction Space tourism is an endeavor, similar to but distinctly different from other forms of space travel, that relies on its participants’ and brokers’ faith that carrying out brave expeditions, modeled on and inspired by those in the past, will ultimately pay off in a better future for humankind. Faith, in this case, refers to a subjective sense that a particular future is guaranteed and may or may not have religious foundations. This faith appears to be heightened by the collective work undertaken by groups endeavoring to send humans into space, creating a sense of what anthropologists Victor and Edith Turner have described as communitas, a shared feeling of equality and common purpose. -

By the time you’ve gotten started, the other person is often halfway to the goal. This is the sort of situation the Soviet Union found itself in when President Kennedy in 1961 announced that the United States would set a goal of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth before the end of the decade. -
