A brilliant, undefeated graded stakes winner at two, and a graded score again at three, Old Fashioned ranks as one of the most talented sons of Unbridled’s Song. He’s off to a stellar start to his stud career, as a leading second season sire of 2014, his trio of graded stakes winners including multiple grade one scorer Fashion Plate.

Old Fashioned is free of Northern Dancer, and his daughter Fashion Plate – winner of the Las Virgenes Stakes (gr. I) and Santa Anita Oaks (gr. I) – is out of a mare by Citidancer (IRE) (by Lomond, a Northern Dancer half-brother to Seattle Slew). Old Fashioned’s dam is closely related to the dam of French Deputy, one of the most important sons of Northern Dancer line stallion, Deputy Minister, so mares from that line will have considerable appeal, with candidates including daughters of French Deputy – who gives inbreeding to the family of Old Fashioned – Dehere, Silver Deputy, Salt Lake Touch Gold, Awesome Again (sire of Ghostzapper), Deputy Commander, Forest Camp and Service Stripe.

The cross of Unbridled’s Song and his sons with mares descending from Northern Dancer through Storm Cat has been one of the most prolific from this sire line, and there are already Unbridled’s Song line stakes winners out of mares by Tale of the Cat (sire of Lion Heart), Storm Boot, Storm Creek, Sea of Secrets, Forest Wildcat (sire of Wildcat Heir), Forestry, Tabasco Cat, Giant’s Causeway (sire of First Samurai), Hennessy (sire of Johannesburg, Cactus Ridge and Wiseman’s Ferry, grandsire of Scat Daddy), Catienus and Menifee (by Harlan, also the sire of Harlan’s Holiday), while other possibilities include Stormy Atlantic, Bernstein, Stormin Fever, Freud, Bluegrass Cat, Yankee Gentleman and Pure Prize. Unbridled’s Song also has a grade one winner out of a mare by Summer Squall (a Storm Bird son bred on the same cross as Storm Cat), and a grade one winner out of a mare by Storm Bird son, Ocean Storm.

Another branch of Northern Dancer to thrive under Unbridled’s Song is that of Danzig, with Chief's Crown, Polish Numbers, Belong to Me, Langfuhr, Boundary and Pine Bluff having all produced Unbridled’s Song line stakes winners. From the Icecapade branch of the Nearctic (sire of Northern Dancer) line, Unbridled’s Song is sire of the brilliant Zensational out of a mare by Phone Trick (by Clever Trick), a horse who is also broodmare sire of a grade one winner by Unbridled.

Given that he is a grandson of Fappiano, it has been no surprise to see Unbridled’s Song and his sons enjoy success with mares descending from In Reality (giving a double of the influential sire, Rough’ n Tumble). Old Fashioned is already sire of the 2014 juvenile graded stakes winner Fashion Alert out of a mare by Tiznow (by Cee’s Tizzy, whose sire, Relaunch, can also be sourced through Bertrando, Skywalker, Honour and Glory and Officer). Out of mares from other branches of this line, Unbridled's Song has grade one winners out of mares by Valid Appeal and Taylor's Falls; a graded stakes winner out of a mare by In Reality himself; a graded stakes winner out a mare by Know Fact, and there is also an Unbridled’s Song grade one winner out of a mare by In Reality son Kyle’s Our Man, and an Unbridled's Song's grade one winner out of a mare by Glitterman (out of a sister to Relaunch).

Unbridled's Song and his sons have also begun to find success when bred back over mares from their own Mr. Prospector sire line, and Old Fashioned has already sired graded stakes winning and grade one placed Sweet Whiskey out of a mare by El Corredor (by Gone West son, Mr. Greeley) and stakes winner Hi Fashioned out of a mare by Gone West son, Zamindar. This would suggest trying mares by other Gone West line stallions such as West By West (already broodmare sire of an Unbridled’s Song line stakes winner), Grand Slam, Elusive Quality, Speightstown and Proud Citizen. The cross of Unbridled’s Song with mares descending from Blushing Groom – like Caro, a Nasrullah line stallion – has produced stakes winners out of mares by Mt. Livermore and his son, Housebuster (suggesting trying mares by Orientate), Rahy and Runaway Groom (sire of Cherokee Run).

The cross of Unbridled’s Song and mares from the sire line of Seattle Slew (whose half- brother Lomond is in the broodmare sire line of Old Fashioned’s grade one winner Fashion Plate) is beginning to emerge as a stakes producing, and has is responsible for nine stakes winners, including Champion Midshipman (out of a mare by Avenue of Flags), grade one winner First Defence (out of a mare by Seattle Slew himself), graded scorers out of mares by Vindication, Pulpit (sire of Sky Mesa and Tapit) and Acceptable (by Capote, also sire of Boston Harbor, who is also sire of an Unbridled’s Song line stakes winner), as well as stakes winners out of mares by A.P. Indy, Fast Play and Chief Seattle. Mineshaft, Flatter, Congrats and Malibu Moon are all products of the same cross as Pulpit, and other A.P. Indy line candidates including Bernardini, Jump Start, Majestic Warrior and Stephen Got Even.
