Day, enshrined in the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame in 2005, won a record 2,482 races at Churchill Downs, including 156 stakes, from 1980-2005. None was more memorable than his triumph aboard W.C. Partee’s Lil E. Tee in the 1992 Kentucky Derby. He rode in a record 21 consecutive renewals of the Kentucky Derby, a streak that ended when hip surgery forced him to miss the 2005 “Run for the Roses.” Day’s Triple Crown résumé also included five wins in the Preakness Stakes – one short of Eddie Arcaro’s record – and three victories in the Belmont Stakes. His 8,803 career wins rank fourth all-time and his mounts that earned $297,914,839 rank second. During his career Day lead the nation in wins six times (1982-84, ’86, and ’90-91). His most prolific single day came on Sept. 13, 1989, when Day set a North American record by winning eight races from nine mounts at Arlington Park.

Kauffman (left), an accomplished horsewoman, has been a portrait artist of more than 30 years who works in bronze sculpture and pastel painting. In addition to her portraiture, she has created trophies that are presented at Fair Hill Races, and for horse show events in New York. MHBA Executive Director Cricket Goodall had seen the work of Kauffman on display at a benefit and reached out to her about creating a Renaissance Awards trophy. 1 The bronze is approximately 11 inches long, 3 ⁄2 inches wide and 1 8 ⁄2 inches high, though a 2-inch base adds to its height. Kauffman has her bronzes cast at New Arts Foundry in Baltimore, which uses the lost wax casing process. It can take months from the time a piece of art in its clay form arrives at the foundry until the bronze is finished. Design and size are among the factors. Kauffman, who made the six-hour trip to Baltimore from her home in Millerton, N.Y., to oversee much of the process, launched her career as an artist by first going to art school in New York before taking courses at the Maryland Institute College of Art, but noted her main education was “when I worked and rode for a (show) horse dealer in New York state for years.” She had competed professionally with show and event horses.

    Out of the Woods By Jennifer Morrison aking a living breeding, raising, and selling racehorses can be one of the Mmost rewarding occupations, but the road to those prizes is one of hard work, dedication, and plenty of risk. Gail Wood, whose Woodlands Farm in Hillsburgh, Ontario, has been the first home of many of Canada’s top Thoroughbreds during the last 10 years, is well versed in all of those. She has earned success and respect in the industry through her determination and a love for breeding a solid racehorse. “The most thrilling thing in the world is to pick a mating, get a foal, take it to the sale, sell it, and then have someone make it a stakes winner,” said Wood. “The only thing that would be better would be to own it.” Wood has experienced many thrills, but also knows how to bounce back from one of Gail Wood brings Woodlands Farm all the way back from tragedy the worst disasters that can hit a horseper- son. It has been less than two years since a barn fire on her property tragically killed 22 horses. One of four girls born to Dave and Eleanor Barbour, Wood always had horses in her blood, but during her college days, she pur- sued an education and a career in radio and television. Her direction in life took a detour the day her father, a real estate agent, sold a horse farm to Harry Hindmarsh, a Toronto busi- nessman. One winter, while juggling freelance jobs in broadcasting, Wood worked with the Hindmarsh horses and became hooked on DAVE LANDRY PHOTOS LANDRY DAVE Gail Wood at her Woodlands Farm in Ontario; she raises horses to sell the racing and breeding game.
