Having a great interest in European and political history, I'm eager to observe how the court balances issues regarding the French economy and foreign policy, all the while maintaining a good relationship with the King regardless of in-court politics. About me: I'm double majoring in Computer Science and Business at Cal, with a minor in Public Policy. I've been involved in MUN in both the high school and college circuits for 6 years now. Besides MUN, I'm also involved in tech startup incubation and consulting both on and off-campus. When I'm free, I'm either binging TV (favorite shows are Game of Thrones, House of Cards, and Peaky Blinders) or rooting for the Lakers.

  • Sergeant John Percy Hampton Bole
Sergeant John Percy H. Bole – WW1 Veteran: Vimy Ridge, Lens, 2nd Passchendaele By Catherine Elson, Belcarra South, BC, November 17th, 2017. Shortly after I submitted an article for the April 2017 issue of the ‘Belcarra Barnacle’ on the ‘Battle of Vimy Ridge’, I received Percy Bole’s “full/complete” CEF (overseas) military file. Wading through this information and the official War Diaries of the ‘54th Battalion’, as well as, doing quite a bit of digging and fact checking, I decided to update my original article… April 9th, 2017, marked the 100th Anniversary of the ‘Battle of Vimy Ridge’, and it is worth noting that a long-time Belcarra resident was one of the 97,000 Canadians who fought in this pivotal battle of World War 1 (WW1). John “Percy” Hampton Bole, the son of Judge Wm. Norman Bole who named ‘Belcarra’, was well-known in his own right as the patriarch of the “Bole Estate”, a 143-acre property that stretched south along the shoreline from the Belcarra picnic grounds to the ‘Admiralty Point Military Reserve’ and across to Bedwell Bay. He was also one of 620,000 Canadian soldiers who served in WW1. Percy “joined-up” in January 1916 (before conscription) and spent almost three years overseas. In 1917, he spent 10 months on the front lines, in France and Belgium, and fought in three major battles that took place that year: the ‘Battle of Vimy Ridge’ (April), the ‘Battle of Lens’ (August), and the ‘2nd Battle of Passchendaele’ (November). J.P.H. Bole, 1925 (CVA Port P185) ‘Witley Camp’, Surrey, England, October 17th, 1916.

The Dutch revolted against the Spanish domination during the 1560s, leading to a protracted war of independence that led to a truce only in 1609.

  • WEDEN and the JACOBITE MOVEMENT (1715-1718) Costel Coroban
Revista Română pentru Studii Baltice şi Nordice, Vol. 2, Issue 2, 2010, pp. 131-152 WEDEN AND THE JACOBITE MOVEMENT (1715-1718) S Costel Coroban “Ovidius” University of Constanţa, e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: During the second decade of the century of the Enlightenment, a short interesting episode occurred between the Kingdoms of Britain, Sweden and the Russian Empire. In the context of Sweden‟s downfall as an imperial power, Charles XII, after the return from his stay in the Ottoman Empire, instructed his minister, Görtz, to surreptitiously journey to the Netherlands in search of finances. The purpose was to revitalize what was left of Sweden‟s maritime power. The only ones interested in funding Charles XII‟s fleet were the Jacobites. They were those English, Scots, Irish and Welsh who were still loyal to the dynasty of James II Stuart of England, exiled during the Glorious Revolution of 1688-1689. James II having died in 1701, they now gathered around his son, Francis Edward Stuart (the Old Pretender). In 1715-1716, the Pretender attempted to invade Britain in order to prevent the succession of George I of Hanover, but failed. Through the Swedish envoys in London and Paris (Gyllenborg and Sparre, respectively), Görtz tried to obtain an agreement from the Jacobites that money would be secretly loaned to Charles XII in exchange for Sweden helping a new Jacobite invasion. British counterintelligence was well aware of these negotiations. Eventually the government of George I arrested Gyllenborg, furthermore publishing his documents. This was done in the hope of internationally isolating Sweden, as the British Hanoverian monarch feared a Russian-Swedish-Jacobite alliance.

WALTER B. CANNON AND THE MYSTERY OF SHOCK: A STUDY OF ANGLO-AMERICAN CO-OPERATION IN WORLD WAR I by SAUL BENISON, A. CLIFFORD BARGER, and ELIN L. WOLFE * The hospital is on a gentle slope, whence one can see far out along the avenue down which we have come. It is all gay and golden. The earth lies there, still and smooth and secure; even fields are to be seen, little, brown, tilled strips, right close by the hospital. And when the wind blows away the stench ofblood and ofgangrene, one can smell the pungent ploughed earth. The distance is blue and everywhere peaceful, for from here the view is away from the Front. -Erich Maria Remarque, Prologue to Der Weg Zuruck (The Road Back), 1931 The autumn of 1914 marked the beginning of an extraordinary transformation of the plains of northern France and Flanders. Fields where farmers had for centuries ploughed with horses, laid down seed, and set out livestock to graze in an effort to sustain life, in a relatively briefperiod oftime became a maiming and killing ground for British, French and German armies. At first, combatants on both sides believed the conflict would be a short one, crowned by a quick victory.
