COLVILLE BUSINESS COUNCIL 509-634-2222 [email protected] 21 Colville Street Nespelem, WA 99155 June 2, 2016 Dear Tribal Members, This publication is for your interest, knowledge and preservation of our history. Our Tribe has come along way, we have. This is a short write-up about some of our success as a Tribal entity, government and corporation. The Colville Business Council invites you to explore the new government building, our Fuel and Retail Division of Colville Tribal Federal Cooperation (CFed) and the overview of our Colville Casinos. The newly built Lucy F. Covington Government Center is located on the plateau of north central Washington, in the south corner of the Colville Indian Reservation in Nespelem. The beloved Lucy F. Covington was a Colville Business Council leader and tribal activists. She passed away in 1982 at the age of 81. In 2015, Dr. Lucy Covington was recognized with a Doctor of Humane Letters for her leadership in Indian Country. Her intention was always for the greater good of the people, land and our sovereign rights. In the 1950s and 1960s Covington abolished federal policy that was designed to terminate our reservation and tribal status. Her steadfast stern attitude trail blazed the way for tribal leaders’ voices to be heard. The Colville Business Council (CBC) officially announced the government building in her name. The Lucy F. Covington Government Center is crafted with the Pacific Northwest attributes unique to our region. Basket weaving patterns embellish the exterior of the building with cedar wood accents. At the entrance of the building is a statue of an ancestral native, with his dip net standing on a cliff above the water. Beyond the water feature is our twelve (12) distinguished tribal bands’ flags that make up the Confederated Tribe of the Colville Indian Reservation. The bands are known by their English and French names: Moses-Columbia (Sinkiuse), Methow, Entiat, Chelan, Wenatchi, Nespelem, San Poil, Palus, Arrow Lakes (Sinixt), Okanogan, Colville and Nez Perce Chief Joseph Band. Partly the Colville Reservation’s boundary is the Columbia River and in the center of the building is a marbled floor replica of the vital river. In the glass center of the two wings is an atrium with bridges and conversational seating on each level. The glass tri-level siding of the walkway has a silhouette picture of Moses Meadows in 2014. The outline of the meadows and pine trees may appear differently due to the 2015 North Star Fire that happened among Moses Meadows. The building is complete with three levels and four wings. The building hosts nearly one thousand (1000) employees. The Lucy F. Covington Government Center is home to nearly thirty-three (33) office departments for various Colville Tribal Divisions, Programs and Services. The tribal services consist of eight (8) divisions: Veterans Program, TERO, Central Services, Education and Employment, Health and Human Services, Health Care Compliance Manager, Natural Resources (formally, Land and Property) and Pubic Safety. Recently the Tribes entered into a one (1) year contract agreement with a Tribal Member to open the Red Willow Café, an on-campus dining facility that is open to the public, yet, convenient for employees. They accept cash and credit/debit cards. For a list of what is available at the Red Willow Café see the menu on the Tribes website or The Red Willow Café Facebook page. The Tribes manages the security of the building and we hold our security highly. At the entrance we nicely ask you sign-in and let our receptionist know where your destination is. This is for emergency purpose; we would like to be accountable for everyone in our building. We will happily help you find your way through our new building.
