From there, she recalled a perfection she had only attained once, far from what she had accomplished winning a handful of the top competitions in the state and nation. “You can’t believe what you have to have: The hair has to be just right; the model shape of the head has to be just right; the feet have to be just right. Christine Cassano has a 1937 letter from Joseph Kohler that illustrates how tough her upbringing was. “As requested by telephone, I am having William Carden Jr. our truck driver, call for the rations that you were so considerate to have issued to the Ned McDougal (Isabella Rhinehart) family. I do not know of a family that is in need of help as much as this family.” Cassano wrote of her upbringing: “The year was 1933. Momma’s uncle Johnny gave them some bedding and a few dishes. Together they headed for the old log house. It had a dirt loor and there were wide gaps between the logs and shakes missing from the roof. The rocks around the old ireplace were falling down. Cows, horses, porcupines and other animals were going in and out of the old house for years. Daddy and Momma started to work on the house getting it ready for the coming winter. Daddy kept his job logging. It is not known how long they stayed in the old log house. However, I was born in a log house in 1935 in Old Inchelium. The loor had piles of dirt where animals dug hole porcupines and rats had left after eating any wall hangings that might have been there. In later years, cows and horses used the house to get out of the weather. Now it was our turn. Mom and Daddy gathered up rocks and made a ireplace in front of the house. They leaned poles up against the front and wrapped a canvas around it to block out the wind and snow. It looked like half a teepee. The loor of the cabin was cleaned off and fur boughs were cut from nearby trees that were interwoven making a mattress for our bedding. With blankets covering the windows it was home.
