By Murray Evans: Associated Press Writer: Paris Kentucky PARIS, KY (AP) • • Frontier preacher Barton W. Stone believed the Bible, and not human creeds, should be the basis of the religion practiced by those who would call themselves Christians. His belief in a document signed 200 years ago led to the development of three religious groups that today claim about 3.5 million followers: Churches of Christ, independent Christian churches, and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Stone’s movement, known as the “restoration” to its followers, “is a priceless part of the American religious story that needs to be known,” said Peter Morgan, president of the Disciples of Christ Historical Society, based in Nashville, TN. This weekend, members of the three groups will meet in the church building where Stone once preached to mark two centuries of history and celebrate the completion of the first reference book on the movement – edited by one man from each of the three groups. On June 28, 1804, six men, five of them Presbyterian ministers, met at Stone’s church at Cane Ridge, northeast of Paris. They signed a document, The Last Will and Testament of the Springfield Presbytery, that declared them free from church creeds and traditions and stated their will to “sink into union with the Body of Christ at large.” Ron Bever, a retired professor of speech at Oklahoma Christian University – a Church of Christ•affiliated school in Oklahoma City – said the document was broadly circulated in religious publications of that era. -

History: Photograph From Historic American Buildings Survey - Library of Congress New Lebanon Cumberland Presbyterian Church From "History of Howard and Cooper Counties Missouri", 1883 New Lebanon Church, C. P. - Is possibly the oldest Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Cooper, having been organized in 1820. The minister officiating, upon that occasion was Rev. Finis Ewing, who was the founder of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. It was called "New Lebanon," because a majority of the original members belonged to a church of the same name, in Logan County, Kentucky, whence they had just come. The names of the constituent members were Robert Kirkpatrick and wife, Thomas Ruby and wife, Alexander Sloan and wife, John Wear and wife, James L. Wear and wife, Hugh Wear and wife, Robert Allison and wife, John Miller and wife, and Mr. Stone and wife. The first elders were Robert Kirkpatrick, Alexander Sloan, John Miller and Thomas Ruby. The old log, church was built in 1821. The present brick house was erected in 1860. The first temperance society that was formed in Cooper county, held its meetings in the old log church in 1824. About the same tune, Rev. R. D. Morrow commenced a school in the neighborhood, for the benefit of young preachers. -

Our church really had two beginnings. One led by Thomas and Alexander Campbell and the other by Barton Stone. We will study each and then find out how they merged and fit it all together. THE CAMPBELLS Thomas Campbell was a Presbyterian minister and schoolteacher in Ireland. The Presbyterian Church was kind of divided into five groups. Thomas Campbell was part of the Evangelical, New Light, Anti-Burgher, Secedar Presbyterians. (How would you like to tell that to people every time they asked you what church you go to.) That group was liberal and evangelical in comparison to the others that were very rigid in what they believed. In 1807 Thomas Campbell immigrated to American to establish a home so that his family could join him later. He brought with him his authority to be a minister in the Presbyterian Church, his Bible, and possibly a few books and personal belongings. For two years he was a circuit minister. This meant that he traveled around on horseback and gave communion to the people who lived in rural Pennsylvania. According to the rules of his church in Ireland he was only allowed to give the Lord’s Supper to those who were a part of the New Light, Anti-Burgher, Secedar Presbyterian church. -

As part of the one body of Christ, we welcome all to the Lord's Table as God has welcomed us.” This is the identity statement of our denomination, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and over the next 5 weeks, starting now, we are going to break this statement a part, discovering what it means and what it means for us, as Disciples in this place. But before we get into the specifics themes, I thought we first need to figure out who we are in the first place. If you are like most members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), you haven’t a clue what that even means! For many of us, we’re pretty sure what we are not, but we’re not that confident about what we are. [FOR 8:30] Now, if you want to study more about these themes, then you will want to go to our Sunday School immediately after this. We will have time for discussion, and to dig in deeper. [FOR 9:30] Now, if you went to Sunday School class today, then you are already way ahead. So, those Sunday School skippers, come next week! We get a chance to explore deeper these themes together. With that said, I want to take you back to the American Frontier. -

Stone (1772-1844) and Walter Scott (1796-1861) both embraced the Christian faith in con- texts in which ministers of the gospel professed the assistance of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit working with the Word may be found in the Reformed Confessions and theology of the Presbyterians as well as that of American Awakening preachers. These theologians, however, commonly criticized extremes in which the Holy Spirit was claimed to supercede the power of the written Word in both the life of the church and the power of the ministry. -

Within a generation, they witnessed the Great Revival (circa 1797-1805), a dramatic mass revelation of religion, converting thousands of worshipers to spiritual rebirth while transforming the region's cultural identity. This study focuses on the lives and careers of three prominent Kentucky settlers: Christian revivalists James McGready and Barton Warren Stone, and pioneering newspaper editor John Bradford. All three men occupy points on a religious spectrum, ranging from the secular public faith of civil religion, to the apocalyptic sectarianism of the Great Revival, yet they also overlap in unexpected ways.
