By extension then, this dedication is equally to everyone involved with WVSOP: the Hillview Terrace congregation that enthusiastically hosts the school, the elders through whose foresight and oversight WVSOP was established, Emanuel Daugherty dedicated director and faculty member, an earnest faculty committed to enacting 2 Timothy 2:2, preacher families who often sacrifice to study at WVSOP, individuals and congregations that help underwrite this investment, and every soul who offers encouragement or prayer on behalf of West Virginia School of Preaching. At the time of this writing, WVSOP is nearing the completion of its second year. Yet, West Virginia School of Preaching has already demonstrated its worth. The school thoroughly instills a profound respect for God’s Word in its students. Louis Rushmore PREFACE If the true church of the Bible did continue to practice pure Christianity during the period of Catholicism and the Reformation, history fails to clearly record the existence and activity of the New Testament church. Doubtless Catholicism (with its inquisitions) and a no more tolerant Protestantism would overshadow a much smaller, less popular, New Testament church. Therefore, it is possible that the New Testament church, in its local sense, has always been present and visible on the earth (though perhaps, as we say, underground). Fortunately, apostolic succession is not essential to practice New Testament Christianity today. Happily, the Word of God (the Bible) is the seed of the kingdom (Luke 8:11), which when planted in honest hearts produces the church of the Bible. The Reformation Movement, however, did make significant contributions to the religious community. First, the possibility of change was firmly established. Of course, the changes from sound doctrine that transformed New Testament congregations into the Catholic Church are lamentable. Yet, defections from the Catholic Church and divisive change within Protestantism at least engendered the hope that some changes would be positive and good. Often, though, the changes were little better than that which was changed (e.g., Consubstantiation versus Transubstantiation). Although the changes themselves sometimes were meaningless, the ability to make changes in religion preserved the possibility of making the kind of changes that would result in the restoration of New Testament Christianity. Second, the reformers unshackled the Bible from the pulpit and gave it to the people. As long as the Bible remained in the custody of Catholic leaders, effective knowledge of God’s Word was concealed behind Catholic dogma. When the Bible, in the languages of the masses, was generally accessible, it was at least possible that human creeds could be exchanged for the doctrine of the New Testament. Religious division and intolerance, first in Europe (and in England) then later in the Americas, escalated. In time, a new wave of reformers (as some referred to themselves) sought a degree of ecumenism. Several were the attempts to reform existing religions, from which ultimately many of the reformers were thrust. New denominations and religious faiths continued to multiply. Eventually, some of these reformers decided to adopt the Bible as their creed. This was an effort to circumvent the religious division characteristic of Protestantism. The Bible was used as the rallying point. Little did many of these reformers realize the significance of adopting the Bible as their standard of authority in religion. As these reformers began to understand Bible truths pertaining to the New Testament church, they slowly moved away from ecumenism toward restoration of New Testament Christianity. The transition, though, was slow. Finally, the Lord’s church was restored in redemption, organization, worship and mission. The church of our Lord again became distinctive from and exclusive of all other religious groups. Yet, a general apostasy gradually enveloped the church again. Some departures were dramatic and divisive (e.g., missionary societies, instrumental music, premillennialism). Other practices have afflicted the church and continue to buffet it (e.g., anti-ism, divorce and re-marriage, Pentecostalism, ecumenism, evolution, apathy, materialism, hedonism and biblical ignorance). The church of our Lord in its local sense still perseveres. At least in its universal sense, we are confident that it shall ever prevail (Matthew 16:18). Among other passages, the Book of Revelation assures us that righteousness will triumph in the end. The following chapters portray the late religious history of the Lord’s people in America as it pertains to Restoration History. The first section is a date-driven chronology of religious history interspersed with secular, historical landmarks. Covering nearly 500 years, the chronology treats the background and the subsequent events of Restoration History, as well as the American Restoration Movement itself. The second section consists of charts depicting religious leaders who affected the Restoration Movement, a flow chart of the development of the American Restoration Movement, a thorough bibliography and an extensive index. This volume is presented to the student with the hope that it may contribute to his understanding of the famed Restoration Movement with its successes and failures. The Restoration leaders and we also must, in essence, concur with Joshua of old. “Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the Lord. And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. In pointing out these differences, all quotations will be made directly from the writings of Alexander Campbell. This would seem to be perfectly fair and to place us on safe ground. Mr. Campbell, by common consent, was the founder of the sect, known as the "Christian Church"; "Church of the Disciples"; "Reformers"; "Campbellites", et al. He was the propounder of its faith, and the pastor of its first society, and therefore to him we must go to ascertain its teachings. It may be said that many of his people no longer believe the tenets and teachings of Mr. Campbell. TUCK 2010 Abstract As the United States descended into war in 1861, the religious leaders of the nation were among the foremost advocates and recruiters for both the Confederate and Union forces. They exercised enormous influence over the laity, and used their sermons and periodicals to justify, promote, and condone the brutal fratricide. Although many historians have focused on the promoters of war, they have almost completely ignored the Disciples of Christ, a loosely organized religious movement based on anti-sectarianism and primitive Christianity, who used their pulpits and periodicals as a platform for peace. This study attempts to merge the remarkable story of the Disciples peace message into a narrative of the Civil War. Their plea for nonviolence was not an isolated event, but a component of a committed, biblically-based response to the outbreak of war from many of the most prominent leaders of the movement. Immersed in the patriotic calls for war, their stance was extremely unpopular and even viewed as traitorous in their communities and congregations. This study adds to the current Disciples historiography, which states that the issue of slavery and the Civil War divided the movement North and South, by arguing that the peace message professed by its major leaders divided the movement also within the sections.

While I do not know if that is always true, I do know that it is important to have a knowledge of church history. I believe that one can make it to heaven without ever knowing many of the facts related in this study for all one needs to know in order to safely reach the eternal abode is the inspired word of God—its facts to be believed and its commands to be obeyed. At the same time, though, a study of the material found in these lessons will help one avoid many of the errors that have led others away from the Lord and cost them eternity. For, in reality, our study is not of church history, per se. Rather, it is mostly a study of the digressions that have plagued the cause of Christ down through the ages and how man struggled to overcome those apostasies. This study is by no means exhaustive. There are many other sources for in-depth consideration on nearly every aspect of this work. Instead it is meant to be an overview of the events which have affected the religion of Christ from the first century unto this present day. This material was first presented as a series of lectures at the Centerville Road church of Christ in Tallahassee, Florida, during the winter of 1997-1998. It has been published in the hope that it will help someone understand more about the true church, the one which is being built by and belongs to Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God.

    Attitudes Toward Ministry Education Among the Founders of the Restoration Movement By Kerry Williams Any examination into the present-day methods of ministerial education employed among Churches of Christ should include a thorough analysis of the figures who conceived of and shaped the Restoration Movement at the beginning of the nineteenth century, from which the Churches of Christ came. What did the founders feel were necessary skills and knowledge for successful ministry? How effective did they consider clergy training in their time to be? What methods of ministry training did they endorse, and which approaches did they reject? The answers to these and other questions are vital in order to understand why Churches of Christ have employed the philosophies of education that are presently used, and how those pedagogical models came to be. The American Restoration Movement represents a unique American religious heritage. Three present religious groups find their origins in the movement: Churches of Christ, Disciples of Christ, and Christian Churches. Each of the three sects are distinctive in doctrine and practice, having taken different evolutionary courses from their commonly shared heritage.1 Yet, all three still retain specific markers unique to their restoration heritage and find commonality in their shared origins. Together, these three religious groups constitute the largest religious communion originating on American soil. In his article concerning the identity of “Campbellites” (Restoration followers of Alexander Campbell), James Cook asserts that Restoration followers 1 Henry E. Used with permission of Mercer University Press) THE FRENZIED EXCITEMENT of nineteenth-century frontier revivalism not only helped to imprint the evangelical style on much of Southern religion, but also led to the emergence of an interest in returning to the practices of primitive Christianity. Both commonsense rationalists and emotional revivalists sought to return to a presumably more pure Christian practice untainted by the accretions of time that had corrupted authentic Christianity. While this restorationist impulse attracted many campmeeting advocates, including Barton W. Stone, in time it coalesced around Alexander Campbell (1788-1866). Restorationists discarded denominational labels at first as signs of division within the one church, preferring to call themselves simply "Christians." In time, however, the followers of Alexander Campbell grew into one of the first indigenous denominations in the United States, the Disciples of Christ or the Christian Church. As the movement grew, it enlarged its vision to include a conviction that American society itself could be transformed into a culture replicating the pure simplicity of New Testament Christian communities even as it extended its following into both the North and the South. For many years Campbell maintained an unofficial headquarters in Bethany, West Virginia. As with other groups, the sectional divisions over slavery brought tension to the movement, which combined with disagreement over religious practices (such as the use of musical instruments in worship, the support of ecumenical missionary societies, and the like) to split the developing denomination in two by 1906, 276 BIBLIOGRAPHY OF RELIGION IN THE SOUTH though for all practical purposes the emerging schism was obvious at least two decades earlier.

P. - Is possibly the oldest Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Cooper, having been organized in 1820. The minister officiating, upon that occasion was Rev. Finis Ewing, who was the founder of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. It was called "New Lebanon," because a majority of the original members belonged to a church of the same name, in Logan County, Kentucky, whence they had just come. The names of the constituent members were Robert Kirkpatrick and wife, Thomas Ruby and wife, Alexander Sloan and wife, John Wear and wife, James L. Wear and wife, Hugh Wear and wife, Robert Allison and wife, John Miller and wife, and Mr. Stone and wife. The first elders were Robert Kirkpatrick, Alexander Sloan, John Miller and Thomas Ruby. The old log, church was built in 1821. The present brick house was erected in 1860. The first temperance society that was formed in Cooper county, held its meetings in the old log church in 1824. About the same tune, Rev. R. D. Morrow commenced a school in the neighborhood, for the benefit of young preachers.

Imbler As the recently constituted nation was expanding beyond the settled northeast, in- formation on a variety of subjects was carried by an increasing number of newly estab- lished local presses. Presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin observes, “With few public entertainments in rural America (c. 1850s), villages and farmers regarded the spo- ken word and political debates as riveting spectator sports.” She continues, “Following such debates, the dueling remarks were regularly printed in their entirety in newspapers then reprinted in pamphlet form…where they provoked discourse over a wide space and prolonged time.”1 While her analysis refers to the general population, it also reflects the character of the Stone-Campbell people who were heavily invested in publications.
