5 iron striker (continued) - striker arm has rectalinear movement (back and forth) Note: The bell in the steeple of the Unitarian Church serves two functions: as a church bell to call people to worship, and as the "voice" of the Town Clock. This bell played another important role during the latter part of the 19th century amd the first quarter of the 20th; it was the fire alarm for the Center Village; A key to the front door of the building was kept in a red box near the entrance. A person, upon discovering a fire, would enter the vestibule and pull the bell rope until others arrived and were dispatched to the scene of the fire. "In 1922 a more sophisticated alarm system was installed, but still utilized the church bell. A second hammer was mounted to strike the bell. Like the one on the clock, this could be actuated to pro- duce a coded signal indicating the location of the fire. A year later the Village Improvement Associ- ation mounted an air whistle on the roof of the Town Hall and the church bell was retired from the fire service." -- the above quotation is from the book 4 325 Years: The story of the First Parish Church, Chelmsford, 1655 - 1980 * written by George Adams Parkhurst. 84.25
