LITTLE BIGHORN NATIONAL MONUMENT TEACHER’S GUIDE TEACHER’S GUIDE LITTLE BIGHORN NATIONAL MONUMENT INTRODUCTION The purpose of this Teacher’s Guide is to provide teachers grades K-12 information and activities concerning Plains Indian Life-ways, the events surrounding the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the Personalities involved and the Impact of the Battle. The information provided can be modified to fit most ages. Unit One: PERSONALITIES Unit Two: PLAINS INDIAN LIFE-WAYS Unit Three: CLASH OF CULTURES Unit Four: THE CAMPAIGN OF 1876 Unit Five: BATTLE OF THE LITTLE BIGHORN Unit Six: IMPACT OF THE BATTLE In 1879 the land where The Battle of the Little Bighorn occurred was designated Custer Battlefield National Cemetery in order to protect the bodies of the men buried on the field of battle. With this designation, the land fell under the control of the United States War Department. It would remain under their control until 1940, when the land was turned over to the National Park Service. Custer Battlefield National Monument was established by Congress in 1946. The name was changed to Little Bighorn National Monument in 1991. This area was once the homeland of the Crow Indians who by the 1870s had been displaced by the Lakota and Cheyenne. The park consists of 765 acres on the east boundary of the Little Bighorn River: the larger north- ern section is known as Custer Battlefield, the smaller Reno-Benteen Battlefield is located on the bluffs over-looking the river five miles to the south. The park lies within the Crow Indian Reservation in southeastern Montana, one mile east of I-90. -

An annual meeting is held every year. The Military Campaign of 1876 After the discovery of gold in the Black Hills following Custer’s 1875 Expedition, the US tried to buy the land from the Sioux, but they would not sell their sacred Paha Sapa. The government issued a decree requiring all non-reservation Indians to report to the agencies by Jan. 1, 1876. Because of this decree, in November of 1875, . Hunkpapa Lakota Headman and Holy Man SITTING BULL sent out a call to gather together all of the Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho at the Chalk Buttes at the end of the Moon When Geese Return to discuss what to do about the incursion of whites into the land granted them in the United States treaties. Sun Dance Sitting Bull decides to hold a Sun Dance to gather the leaders to decide what to do about the white invaders and unite the people in the sacred ceremony. Sitting Bull sacrifices 100 pieces of flesh and has a vision of Long Knives Falling from the Sky. General George Crook, General Alfred Terry, and Colonel John Gibbon Led the Campaign to move all Indians to reservations, defeating those who resisted. Battle of the Rosebud Or, Battle Where the Woman Saved Her Brother On June 17, 1876, Sioux and Cheyenne forces led by Crazy Horse spotted General Crook, his 1,050 soldiers, and 260 Crow and Shoshone scouts, defeating them and eliminating them from the campaign. Three Army Expeditions General Crook would be coming from the south from Fort Fetterman in Wyoming Territory Col Gibbon would arrive from the west from Fort Ellis in Montana Territory General Terry would travel from the east from Fort Abraham Lincoln in Dakota Territory. -

C. Peter Ripley, ed. The Black Abolitionist Papers. Vol. I: The British Isles, 1880-1865. (Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 1985) xxx, 609 pp., $40.00. From 1830 until 1865, hundreds of American, Canadian, and West Indian blacks went to the British Isles and became active in the antislavery movement, which in 1833 reached a peak there with abolition of slavery in the Empire but was only beginning to gain momentum in the United States. They represented the full spectrum of free or fugitive Western Hemisphere blacks: some were well-known antislavery speakers and writers such as Frederick Douglass and Martin Delany; others were originally unknowns such as John Andrew Jackson, who spoke in "the peculiar broken dialect of the negro," and John Brown, whose language was "of the rudest but most impressive character." A few, as for example William Nixon, resorted to fraudand were imprisoned, or, like Alexander Duval, were reduced to begging in the streets of London. Several were women, most notably Ellen Craft and Sarah Remond. Speaking in public, publishing books and pamphlets and writing for newspapers, and collecting money and goods for causes as varied as founding settlements in Canada, supporting black schools and news papers, and buying the freedom of relatives, these energetic and in genious people come to be known collectively as the Black Abolitionists. From diverse backgrounds and with no central organization, they nevertheless successfully pursued the common goal of persuading "the British public to place its moral [and financial] support behind the crusade to end American slavery." The story of these courageous people is now generally available in the first volume of a projected five-volume documentary series on the black abolitionists in Britain, Canada, and the United States. -

PERFORMING ARTS • FILM HISTORICAL DICTIONARY OF Historical Dictionaries of Literature and the Arts, No. 26 VARNER When early filmgoers watched The Great Train Robbery in 1903, many shrieked in terror at the very last clip, when one of the outlaws turned toward the camera and seemingly fired a gun directly at the audience. The puff of WESTERNS smoke was sudden and hand-colored, and it looked real. Today we can look back at that primitive movie and see all the elements of what would evolve HISTORICAL into the Western genre. Perhaps the Western’s early origins—The Great Train DICTIONARY OF Robbery was the first narrative, commercial movie—or its formulaic yet enter- WESTERNS in Cinema taining structure has made the genre so popular. And with the recent success of films like 3:10 to Yuma and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, the Western appears to be in no danger of disappearing. The story of the Western is told in this Historical Dictionary of Westerns in Cinema through a chronology, a bibliography, an introductory essay, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on cinematographers; com- posers; producers; films like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Dances with Wolves, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, High Noon, The Magnificent Seven, The Searchers, Tombstone, and Unforgiven; actors such as Gene Autry, in Cinema Cinema Kirk Douglas, Clint Eastwood, Henry Fonda, Jimmy Stewart, and John Wayne; and directors like John Ford and Sergio Leone. On se bornera à citer le remarquable travail de Mathieu Lacque-Labarthe Les Indiens dans le cinéma américain, Presses Universitaires de Paris, 2013) qui représente la somme de ce que l’on peut écrire sur le sujet. Il nous a néanmoins paru que certaines des conclusions de la présente étude ne sont pas nécessairement redondantes par rapport à d’autres écrits et que le lien entre le choix de l’acteur et le personnage historique qu’il incarne n’a pas toujours été suffisamment souligné. ***** Il aura fallu attendre Dances with wolves (Danse avec les loups) de Kevin Costner en 1990 pour voir enfin des rôles d’indiens entièrement interprétés par des Amérindiens.(1) L’Indien (ou Native American pour s’en tenir à la terminologie contemporaine) occupe une place centrale dans le Western, et ce depuis le début du XXème siècle. The narrator notes that Ross lives in "a nice little white house, on the right hand side of King street as you go in from the country towards the market." The right-hand side? Was that level of precision necessary? Because people challenged the veracity of slave narratives at the time they were published, details mattered very much. But the level of specificity in this instance caught my eye. The facts were borne out: property records in the Charleston County Register Mesne Conveyance Deeds office show that in 1831, a James L. Ross, known also as "Major Ross," purchased a house situated on the west side of King Street, just a few blocks north of the market. If you were entering the city of Charleston from the country, Ross' house would indeed have been on the right-hand side (fig 1). -

Of these, five were on detached service at that time and did not participate in the campaign and battle. The other seven participated in the encounter. Also, many other men in the Seventh Cavalry at that time had at least some Swiss ancestry, and all of them like ly suffered from the psychological effects of the battle as did numerous other participants.
