Richard Rorty at Princeton: Personal Recollections RAYMOND GEUSS When i arrived in Princeton during the 1970s my addiction to tea was already long-standing and very well entrenched, but I was so concerned about the quality of the water in town that I used to buy large containers of allegedly “pure” water at Davidson’s—the local supermarket, which seems now to have gone out of business. I didn’t, of course, have a car, and given the amount of tea I consumed, the trans- port of adequate supplies of water was a highly labor-inten- sive and inconvenient matter. Dick and Mary Rorty must have noticed me lugging canisters of water home, because, with characteristic generosity, they developed the habit of call- ing around at my rooms in 120 Prospect, often on Sunday mornings, offering to take me by car to fill my water bottles at a hugely primitive and highly suspicious-looking outdoor water tap on the side of a pumphouse which was operated by the Elizabethtown Water Company on a piece of waste land near the Institute Woods. This pumphouse with its copiously dripping tap was like something out of Tarkhovski’s film about Russia after a nuclear accident, Stalker, and the sur- rounding area was a place so sinister one half expected to be attacked by packs of dogs in the final stages of radiation sick- ness or by troops of feral children who had been left by their parents to fend for themselves while the parents went off to the library to finish their dissertations. -

NATURE, SOCIOLOGY, AND THE FRANKFURT SCHOOL By Ryan Gunderson A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Sociology – Doctor of Philosophy 2014 ABSTRACT NATURE, SOCIOLOGY, AND THE FRANKFURT SCHOOL By Ryan Gunderson Through a systematic analysis of the works of Max Horkheimer, Theodor W. Adorno, Herbert Marcuse, and Erich Fromm using historical methods, I document how early critical theory can conceptually and theoretically inform sociological examinations of human-nature relations. Currently, the first-generation Frankfurt School’s work is largely absent from and criticized in environmental sociology. I address this gap in the literature through a series of articles. One line of analysis establishes how the theories of Horkheimer, Adorno, and Marcuse are applicable to central topics and debates in environmental sociology. A second line of analysis examines how the Frankfurt School’s explanatory and normative theories of human- animal relations can inform sociological animal studies. The third line examines the place of nature in Fromm’s social psychology and sociology, focusing on his personality theory’s notion of “biophilia.” Dedicated to 바다. This crisis involves a growing sense of malaise that leads to large-scale questions about whether life in the modern world can be seen as meaningful and good. I claim that confronting this problem is a central concern throughout Nietzsche’s philosophical career, but that his understanding of this problem and its solution shifts throughout different phases of his thinking. Part of what is unique to Nietzsche’s treatment of this problem is his understanding that attempts to imbue existence with meaning are self-undermining, becoming pathological and only further entrenching the problem. Nietzsche’s solution to this problem ultimately resides in treating meaning as a spiritual need that can only be fulfilled through a creative interpretive process. Integral to this concept is the variable and highly subjective distinction made by various parties between “good” and “evil,” “right” and “wrong,” “us” and “them.” This thesis examines these concepts as they relate to the actions and manifestos of the Red Army Faction (die Rote Armee Fraktion) in 1970s Germany, and seeks to understand how its members became regarded as terrorists. -

Adorno’s role in the formation of a public discourse on the Holocaust in postwar Ger- many. There are multiple reasons for this. Adorno’s presence loomed large in the new republic’s sociopolitical and intellectual landscape. During the 1950s and 1960s he gave over three hundred public speeches and delivered about as many radio lectures, prompting some to speak of a veritable Adorno-infl ation.1 Adorno could be heard—and was indeed listened to—on an almost weekly basis. 2 1. The emergence of performativity Utopia in Practice: in the academy and the arts The Discovery of The idea of performativity first appeared in the speech act theory of John Lang- Performativity in shaw Austin. In 1955, Harvard University invited the Oxford-based British philoso- pher to give the annual William James lec- Sixties’ Protest, Arts tures. In this series of lectures, Austin at- tacked the philosophical view predominant and Sciences at that time that utterances chiefly serve to state facts and thus can be deemed true or false according to the truth or falsity of the facts they state.1 In contrast, he argued that sentences which can be evaluated for their truth content – ”constative” utterances – only form a small and special part on one end of the scale of utterance types. At the other end, Austin identified utterances that do not state any facts but with which the speaker performs an action – “performa- tive” utterances. Performative utterances like “I name this ship the Queen Elizabeth”, Austin main- Martin Klimke and Joachim Scharloth tained, do not describe anything but create reality when certain conditions are fulfilled. German Historical Institute, Washington, DC/University of Zurich These sentences are not true or false, but become “infelicitous” or “unhappy” when the connection between them and the so- cial order of which they are a part is out of sync. When performed successfully, per- formative utterances set conditions for de- termining the appropriateness of future ac- tion. Calling a ship that has been baptised “Queen Elizabeth” “Maria Stuart” would thus be considered inappropriate. Habermas, Peukert, Hoehn: Towards a Political Ecclesiology of Communicative Praxis
HABERMAS, PEUKERT, HOEHN: TOWARDS A POLITICAL ECCLESIOLOGY OF COMMUNICATIVE PRAXIS The first real task of the presentation was to place the subject of the paper in the context of the conference theme of "The Linguistic Turn." An investigation of Ha- bermas' idea of communicative action, in particular through an examination of its appropriation in a theological context by Helmut Peukert and Hans-Joachim Hoehn, would show how something as apparently abstract and theoretical as a linguistic turn could have significant practical consequences for the life of the church. Further, al- though Juergen Habermas is himself not noticeably favorable towards religion, it is possible through the mediation of Peukert and Hoehn to establish a relationship be- tween church and communicative action distinguished by three "moments," a mo- ment of need, a moment of critique, and a moment of solidarity. Habermas' interest in critical philosophy and social science as ways of eman- cipating human beings from positivism and so-called "value-free" science led di- rectly to his personal "linguistic turn." Habermas found that in all language that is not deliberately distorted there is an implied intention to achieve consensus. Language operates with implicit validity claims to comprehensibility, truth, truth- fulness and lightness. Differences between speakers can be arbitrated through the attempt to "discursively redeem" these validity claims in argumentation, pursued in a genuinely open atmosphere oriented to achieving understanding "purely by the force of the better argument.'' In his more recent work Habermas has developed his theory of communicative action into a kind of comprehensive moral vision, in which the exercise of undis- torted communication is the best protection of the human community from the un- checked instrumentalism of technology on the one hand, and the "strategic" manipulation of individuals and communities on the other.
