  • ISABEL DE BEAUMONT, DUCHESS of LANCASTER (C.1318-C.1359) by Brad Verity1
THE FIRST ENGLISH DUCHESS -307- THE FIRST ENGLISH DUCHESS: ISABEL DE BEAUMONT, DUCHESS OF LANCASTER (C.1318-C.1359) by Brad Verity1 ABSTRACT This article covers the life of Isabel de Beaumont, wife of Henry of Grosmont, Duke of Lancaster. Her parentage and chronology, and her limited impact on the 14th century English court, are explored, with emphasis on correcting the established account of her death. It will be shown that she did not survive, but rather predeceased, her husband. Foundations (2004) 1 (5): 307-323 © Copyright FMG Henry of Grosmont (c.1310-1361), Duke of Lancaster, remains one of the most renowned figures of 14th century England, dominating the military campaigns and diplomatic missions of the first thirty years of the reign of Edward III. By contrast, his wife, Isabel ― the first woman in England to hold the title of duchess ― hides in the background of the era, vague to the point of obscurity. As Duke Henry’s modern biographer, Kenneth Fowler (1969, p.215), notes, “in their thirty years of married life she hardly appears on record at all.” This is not so surprising when the position of English noblewomen as wives in the 14th century is considered – they were in all legal respects subordinate to their husbands, expected to manage the household, oversee the children, and be religious benefactresses. Duchess Isabel was, in that mould, very much a woman of her time, mentioned in appropriate official records (papal dispensation requests, grants that affected lands held in jointure, etc.) only when necessary. What is noteworthy, considering the vast estates of the Duchy of Lancaster and her prominent social position as wife of the third man in England (after the King and the Black Prince), is her lack of mention in contemporary chronicles.

  • Maud De Chaworth
Maud De Chaworth Pg 1/3 Born: 2 Feb 1282 Kidwelly, Carmarthen, England, Wales Married: Henry Plantagenet, Earl of Lancaster Died: 3 Dec 1322 Priory, Hampshire, , England Parents: Patrick de Chaworth & Isable De Beauchamp Maud de Chaworth, also known as Matilda Chaworth, was born February 2, 1282. Although the exact date of her death is unknown, it is estimated that she must have died sometime before December 3, 1322. Parents Maud was the daughter and only child of Sir Patrick de Chaworth (Lord of Kidwelly, in Carmarthenshire, South Wales) and Isabella de Beauchamp, and granddaughter of William de Beauchamp, 9th Earl of Warwick. Her father, Patrick de Chaworth died on July 7th, 1283. He was estimated to live until he was approximately three decades old. Approximately, three years later in 1286, Isabel Beauchamp remarried to Hugh Despenser the Elder and had two sons and four daughters by him. Thus, this made Maud the half-sister of Hugh the younger Despenser. Her mother, Isabel Beauchamp, died in 1306, which is more than two decades after her first husband. Childhood When her father died, Maud was only a year old and left as a rich heiress. However, because she was a mere infant, she became a ward of Queen Eleanor of Castile who was married to King Edward I. (Together, this couple had sixteen children. Only nine out of sixteen survived, however.) Queen Eleanor passed away at Harby in Lincoln-Shire. Once Queen Eleanor past away of malaria in 1290 at approximately fifty years of age, her husband, King Edward I, granted Maud’s marriage to his brother Edmund Plantagenet, Earl of Lancaster on December 30, 1292.

  • Family Lines from Companions of the Conqueror
Companions of the Conqueror and the Conqueror 1 Those Companions of William the Conqueror From Whom Ralph Edward Griswold and Madge Elaine Turner Are Descended and Their Descents from The Conqueror Himself 18 May 2002 Note: This is a working document. The lines were copied quickly out of the Griswold-Turner data base and have not yet been retraced. They have cer- tainly not been proved by the accepted sources. This is a massive project that is done in pieces, and when one piece is done it is necessary to put it aside for a while before gaining the energy and enthusiasm to continue. It will be a working document for some time to come. This document also does not contain all the descents through the Turner or Newton Lines 2 Many men (women are not mentioned) accompanied William the Conqueror on his invasion of England. Many men and women have claimed to be descended from one or more of the= Only a few of these persons are documented; they were the leaders and colleagues of William of Normandy who were of sufficient note to have been recorded. Various sources for the names of “companions” (those who were immediate associates and were rewarded with land and responsibility in England) exist. Not all of them have been consulted for this document. New material is in preparation by reputable scholars that will aid researchers in this task. For the present we have used a list from J. R. Planché. The Conqueror and His Companions. Somerset Herald. London: Tinsley Brothers, 1874.. The persons listed here are not the complete list but constitute a subset from which either Ralph Edward Griswold or Madge Elaine Turner (or both) are descended).

The study of marriage in the Middle Ages is particularly relevant: this period saw the emergence of the establishment of many marriage patterns that exist today.

  • Some Lines of Descent to St. Gregory, the Illuminator, Bishop of Leontius
Some Lines of Descent to St. Gregory, the Illuminator, Bishop of Leontius Bishop Gregory of Leontius, now called St. Gregory, the Illuminator, Bishop of Leontius, was the first official head of the Armenian Apostolic catholic church. In modern times, he is revered as the Patron Saint of that church, being credited with the conversion of his people from paganism to Christianity in about 301-314 AD. His work led to Armenia’s becoming the first Christian nation on Earth. St. Gregory was born about the year 257 in Armenia, but perhaps as early as 239, according to different sources. His name was Grigor Lusavorich. As a youth, he was taken to Caesarea after his father, Anak Partev (the Parthian) assassinated King Khosrov of Kadj (Parthia), and it was there that Gregory was introduced to the Christian faith. He had been taken there for his protection after members of the King’s family succeeded in their retaliation against his family for his father’s infamous act. In about the year 280, he returned to Armenia where he preached for the remainder of his life. Although the years are a bit ambiguous, it appears that in about 300-314, he was consecrated Bishop, and the following year, he baptized several members of the royal court, including Tiridates III, as well as many other upper class nobles. At that time Tiridates issued a decree for Gregory to begin the movement of converting the nation to Christianity. Gregory died in Armenia in or very near the year 331. After his death, his body was taken to Thodanum.

  • “Our Literary Genes”
Our Literary Genes 1 INTRODUCTION The talent for writing literature, poetry and prose, seems to be a gift, not something everybody can learn. Maybe there is such a gene, which has been inherited. Some in our family seem to have that interest and talent; my brother Kaj has written stories and poetry, which we have on our homepage. I have compiled some information about several famous authors which definitely have had that gene – and which maybe has been carried over to some in our family. These authors are listed on the next page and there are brief descriptions about them in this book, taken from Wikipedia. The cover page shows some of their most popular books. An appendix shows how we are related to them, in alphabetical order. For some I have included YouTube links for listening to their poetry and music. Our earliest direct ancestor/author is the Viking age famous poet Egill Skallagrimsson (910 - 990). He is my grand-daughter Anna’s 32nd great-grandfather. His story and famous poems were written down by Snorri Sturluson. Anna is interested in and has now begun to do some writing, so I have listed these authors’ relationships in relation to her. Her first novel, Protected (Book 1 in the Ariya Adams trilogy), is available now on Amazon and Barnes & Noble in e-book form. Amazon offers a free downloadable application for computers for users who do not have a Kindle. The links to the book in the US are available below but they are available on other countries Amazon sites as well.

  • Descendant Report
Descendants of Godwulf Generation 1 1. GODWULF was born about 80 AD. He died about 125 AD. Notes for Godwulf: Godwulf was born about 80 AD. He heads the longest genealogical line recorded in my records, covering 67 generations. That shows easily that a generation averages about 29 years. That is the time between a person's birth and the first child given issue by that person. Source:http://www.smokykin.com/ged/f002/f54/a0025416.htm Godwulf is the 34th great grandfather of the 26th great grand uncle of Betty Westmoreland and the 28th great grand uncle of my Westmoreland grandchildren. Godwulf's descendants travel down through the family line of my son-in-law, Steven O. Westmoreland. This very long genealogical line ties into my most lengthly genealogical line, the one going back to Halfdan Vanha Sveidasson, the Earle of the Uplands in Norway. Halfdan Vanha Sveidasson was a Viking born about 750 AD. Halfdan Vanha Sveidasson is my 34th great grandfather. Halfdan Vanha Sveidasson's family line and Godwulf's family line came together in the person of French born English King Henry II. King Henry II came from the Plantagenet (pronounced planTAJ uh niht), which was the family name of a line of kings that ruled England from 1154 to 1399. These kings descended from the marriage of Matilda, daughter of King Henry I, to Geoffrey, Count of Anjou, France. Geoffrey was nicknamed Plantagenet, because he wore a sprig of the broom (genet) plant in his cap. Numerous historians also call these kings Angevins, meaning from Anjou.
