California's Native Ferns
CALIFORNIA’S NATIVE FERNS A survey of our most common ferns and fern relatives Native ferns come in many sizes and live in many habitats • Besides living in shady woodlands and forests, ferns occur in ponds, by streams, in vernal pools, in rock outcrops, and even in desert mountains • Ferns are identified by producing fiddleheads, the new coiled up fronds, in spring, and • Spring from underground stems called rhizomes, and • Produce spores on the backside of fronds in spore sacs, arranged in clusters called sori (singular sorus) Although ferns belong to families just like other plants, the families are often difficult to identify • Families include the brake-fern family (Pteridaceae), the polypody family (Polypodiaceae), the wood fern family (Dryopteridaceae), the blechnum fern family (Blechnaceae), and several others • We’ll study ferns according to their habitat, starting with species that live in shaded places, then moving on to rock ferns, and finally water ferns Ferns from moist shade such as redwood forests are sometimes evergreen, but also often winter dormant. Here you see the evergreen sword fern Polystichum munitum Note that sword fern has once-divided fronds. Other features include swordlike pinnae and round sori Sword fern forms a handsome coarse ground cover under redwoods and other coastal conifers A sword fern relative, Dudley’s shield fern (Polystichum dudleyi) differs by having twice-divided pinnae. Details of the sori are similar to sword fern Deer fern, Blechnum spicant, is a smaller fern than sword fern, living in constantly moist habitats Deer fern is identified by having separate and different looking sterile fronds and fertile fronds as seen in the previous image. -

Habitat affected: this disease thrives in cool, wet climates including areas in coastal California within the fog belt or in low- lying forested areas along stream beds and other bodies of water. Oaks associated with understory species that are susceptible to foliar infections are at higher risk of becoming infected. 2. Host plants: Forty-five hosts are regulated for this disease. These hosts have been found naturally infected by P. ramorum and have had Koch’s postulates completed, reviewed and accepted. Approximately fifty-nine species are associated with Phytophthora ramorum. These species are found naturally infected; P. ramorum has been cultured or detected with PCR but Koch’s postulates have not been completed or documented and reviewed. Northern red oak (Quercus rubra) is considered an associated host. See end of document for complete list of plant hosts. National Risk Model and Map shows susceptible forest types in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States. -

ABSTRACT Background. Carduus, commonly known as plumeless thistles, is a genus in the Asteraceae family that exhibits both medicinal value and invasive tendencies. However, the genomic data of Carduus (i.e., complete chloroplast genomes) have not been sequenced. Methods. We sequenced and assembled the chloroplast genome (cpDNA) sequences of three Carduus species using the Illumina Miseq sequencing system and Geneious Prime. Phylogenetic relationships between Carduus and related taxa were reconstructed using Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian Inference analyses. In addition, we used a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the protein coding region of the matK gene to develop molecular markers to distinguish C. crispus from C. acanthoides and C. tenuiflorus. Results. The cpDNA sequences of C. crispus, C. acanthoides, and C. tenuiflorus ranged from 152,342 bp to 152,617 bp in length. Comparative genomic analysis revealed high conservation in terms of gene content (including 80 protein-coding, 30 tRNA, and four rRNA genes) and gene order within the three focal species and members of subfamily Carduoideae. Despite their high similarity, the three species differed with respect to the number and content of repeats in the chloroplast genome. Importance of Coastal Grasslands Point Reyes Seashore & Influence of Shrub Establishment October 18, 2012 Central Coast Rangeland Coalition Fall 2012 Meeting Abstracts Why Do We Care about California’s Coastal Prairie? Dr. Grey Hayes, Restoration Ecologist, Elkhorn Slough Reserve In a very brief presentation, Dr. Hayes outlines some of the central concerns facing conservationists working to maintain biological diversity in California’s coastal prairie. A wealth of rare plant and wildlife species is found in this increasingly threatened plant community. Even when ‘protected,’ coastal prairie managers are afforded little funding and even less scientific certainty about how to manage this system. Will we find a way to care enough to save California’s coastal prairie species? Characteristics and Dynamics of California Coastal Grasslands Joe McBride, Professor, Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management, University of California, Berkeley Grasslands of the coastal zone in California vary in species composition in relation to environmental gradients and grazing history. Studies of grasslands in Mt. Tamilpais State Park demonstrate the importance of the summer fog gradient in controlling species composition. The elimination of grazing from the park in the 1950s resulted in the "recovery" and/or "return" of native bunch grass species. The grasslands in Mt. Tamilpais State Park are now being invaded by coyote brush and Douglas-fir. A similar invasion has been noted in coastal grasslands in parks and open space areas of the San Francisco Bay area where livestock have been removed. Vegetation Community Change and Special Status Species in the Rangelands of Point Reyes National Seashore Amelia Ryan, Wetland and Plant Ecologist, Point Reyes National Seashore, National Park Service Point Reyes supports over 60 plant species that are considered rare, threatened, or endangered, including many that occur in grazed lands. -

The national park was F E R N S established in 1968. In 1994, a cooperative agreement with the California Department of Parks and Recreation added Del Norte Coast, Prairie Creek, Athyriaceae – Lady Fern Family and Jedediah Smith Redwoods state parks to form a single administrative Athyrium filix-femina var. cyclosporum • northwestern lady fern unit. Together they comprise about 133,000 acres (540 km2), including 37 miles of coast line. On Oct 10, 2019, FGC staff transmitted the petition to DFW for review. A notice of receipt of petition was published in the California Regulatory Notice Register on Nov 22, 2019. California Fish and Game Code Section 2073.5 requires that DFW evaluate the petition and submit to FGC a written evaluation with a recommendation, which was received at FGC’s Feb 21, 2020 meeting. The evaluation report (Exhibit 2) delineates each of the categories of information required for a petition, evaluates the sufficiency of the available scientific information for each of the required components, and incorporates additional relevant information that DFW possessed or received during the review period. Today’s agenda item follows the public release and review period of the evaluation report prior to FGC action, as required in Fish and Game Code Section 2074. -
