  • Bone, Antler, Ivory and Teeth (PDF)
Bone, Antler, Ivory, and Teeth Found in such items as tools, jewelry, and decorations Identification and General Information Items derived from skeletal materials are both versatile and durable. Bone, antler, ivory, and teeth have been used for various tools and for ornamentation. Because ivory is easily carved yet durable, it has also long been used by many cultures as a medium for recorded information. Bones and teeth from many different animals, including mammals, birds, and fish, may be found in items in all shapes and sizes. Each culture uses the indigenous animals in its region. Identifying bones and teeth used in an item can be easy or difficult, depending on how they were processed and used. Frequently, bones and teeth were minimally processed, and the surfaces are still visible, allowing identification by color (off-white to pale yellow), shape, and composition. Bird, fish, and reptile bones are usually lighter in mass and color than mammal bones. Bone and antler can be used in their natural form, or polished with sand and other abrasives to a very smooth and glossy surface. Bone is sometimes confused with ivory, which is also yellowish and compact. Sea mammal ivory, which is the prevalent source used by American Indians, is distinct in structure. Walrus ivory, the most common sea mammal ivory, has a dense outer layer and a mottled inner core. Bone and antler in archaeological collections are often burnt and can be blue black to whitish gray. Charred bone or antler can be mistaken for wood. Magnification helps to distinguish bone from similar materials, as it has a thin solid layer surrounding a porous interior structure with a hollow core where the marrow is contained.

  • Use of Natural Colours in the Ice Cream Industry
USE OF NATURAL COLOURS IN THE ICE CREAM INDUSTRY Dr. Juan Mario Sanz Penella Dr. Emanuele Pedrazzini Dr. José García Reverter SECNA NATURAL INGREDIENTS GROUP Definition of ice cream Ice cream is a frozen dessert, a term that includes different types of product that are consumed frozen and that includes sorbets, frozen yogurts, non-dairy frozen desserts and, of course, ice cream. In order to simplify its classification, we can consider for practical purposes two different types of frozen desserts: ice cream and sorbets. Ice cream includes all products that have a neutral pH and contain dairy ingredients. While sorbet refers to products with an acidic pH, made with water and other ingredients such as fruit, but without the use of dairy. Additionally, when referring to ice cream, we are not referring to a single type of product, we are actually referring to a wide range of these. Ice cream is a food in which the three states of matter coexist, namely: water in liquid form and as ice crystals, sugars, fats and proteins in solid form and occluded air bubbles in gaseous form, Figure 1. Artisanal ice creams based on natural ingredients which give it its special texture. It should be noted that ice cream is a very complete food from a nutritional point of view since it incorporates in its formulation a wide range of ingredients (sugars, milk, fruits, egg products ...) essential for a balanced diet. Another aspect of great relevance in the manufacture of ice cream is the hedonic factor. Ice cream is consumed mainly for the pure pleasure of tasting it, the hedonic component being the main factor that triggers its consumption, considering its formulation and design a series of strategies to evoke a full range of sensations: gustatory, olfactory, visual and even, of the touch and the ear.

  • Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and Bird Sanctuary
ELOISE BUTLER WILDFLOWER GARDEN AND BIRD SANCTUARY WEEKLY GARDEN HIGHLIGHTS Phenology notes for the week of October 5th – 11th It’s been a relatively warm week here in Minneapolis, with daytime highs ranging from the mid-60s the low 80s. It’s been dry too; scant a drop of rain fell over the past week. The comfortable weather was pristine for viewing the Garden’s fantastic fall foliage. Having achieved peak color, the Garden showed shades of amber, auburn, beige, blond, brick, bronze, brown, buff, burgundy, canary, carob, castor, celadon, cherry, cinnabar, claret, clay, copper, coral, cream, crimson, ecru, filemont, fuchsia, gamboge, garnet, gold, greige, khaki, lavender, lilac, lime, magenta, maroon, mauve, meline, ochre, orange, peach, periwinkle, pewter, pink, plum, primrose, puce, purple, red, rose, roseate, rouge, rubious, ruby, ruddy, rufous, russet, rust, saffron, salmon, scarlet, sepia, tangerine, taup, tawny, terra-cotta, titian, umber, violet, yellow, and xanthic, to name a few. According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the northern two thirds of the state reached peak color earlier in 2020 than it did in both 2019 and 2018, likely due to a relatively cool and dry September. Many garter snakes have been seen slithering through the Garden’s boundless leaf litter. Particularly active this time of year, snakes must carefully prepare for winter. Not only do the serpents need to locate an adequate hibernaculum to pass the winter, but they must also make sure they’ve eaten just the right amount of food. Should they eat too little, they won’t have enough energy to make it through the winter.

  • Attachment G – CHP AMBER, SILVER, BLUE and YELLOW Alerts [Source: CHP]
Attachment G – CHP AMBER, SILVER, BLUE AND YELLOW Alerts [source: CHP] By legislation the California Highway Patrol (CHP) is responsible for public alerting in specified circumstances. CHP uses a variety of alert dissemination tools including Changeable Message Signs on freeways, the broadcast Emergency Alert System (EAS), Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) and social media. Details appear in the following CHP Information Bulletins. G-1 INFORMATION for Allied BULLETIN Agencies BULLETIN NUMBER 217 AMBER ALERT PROGRAM UPDATE AND ENDANGERED MISSING ADVISORIES The purpose of this Information Bulletin is to provide an AMBER Alert program update and discuss the use of an Endangered Missing Advisory (EMA) for circumstances where the statutory criteria for an AMBER Alert are not met. Both procedures have proven to be very successful in locating abducted and missing children when implemented in an appropriate manner. Background America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response Alert, or AMBER Alert, is a program that partners California’s law enforcement community, media broadcasting agencies, and the public in locating abducted children. The goal of an AMBER Alert is to provide the public with immediate information about a child abduction via widespread media broadcasts and to solicit help from the public in the safe and swift return of the child. In cases where the AMBER Alert criteria are not met, there are other options for law enforcement agencies to use to disseminate information to the public. Activating an AMBER Alert Local law enforcement agencies investigate reports of an abducted or missing child. Ultimately, the local investigating law enforcement agency determines if the AMBER Alert activation criteria specified in Section 8594 of the Government Code (GC) have been met.
