The objectives are to develop and present working interpretations of three particular sources, Fiore dei Liberi’s Il Fior di Battaglia (1410) Philippo Vadi’s De Arte Gladiatoria Dimicandi (ca 1480) and Ridolfo Capo- ferro’s Gran Simulacro (1610). By “working interpretations” I mean a clear and reasonably complete training method for acquiring the necessary skills to execute these styles of swordsmanship in practice: so a technical, tactical, and pedagogical method for each style. The methodology includes transcription and translation (where necessary), close reading, tropological analysis, practical experiment, technical practice, and presentation of findings. The results include but are not limited to the three publications submitted for examination, which are: Veni Vadi Vici, published in 2012, which is a transcription, translation and commentary on De Arte Gladiatoria Dimicandi: this has been extensively corrected and updated, and re- submitted for a second examination after which it will be published. -

Práce je tematicky rozdělena do dvou základních kapitol. První část je zaměřena na bojová umění a úpoly. Tyto dva pojmy jsou definovány a porovnávány z různých úhlů pohledu a historického vývoje. Na tuto část navazuje druhá kapitola práce, která se zabývá šermem. V této kapitole jsou vymezeny základní pojmy, historie a geneze šermu. Součástí této kapitoly je i sportovní šerm, scénický šerm a klasický šerm jakoţto další podoba šermířské aktivity mimo bojová umění; jejich pojetí, historie a pravidla. S přihlédnutím k dnešní době je šerm stavěn do pozice stále většího fenoménu, i kdyţ jako takový má dlouholetou historii a prošel si rozmanitým vývojem. A Kampfschwert from the 15Th Century –
Acta Periodica Duellatorum, Scholarly section 7 DOI 10.1515/apd-2015-0007 A Kampfschwert from the 15th century – a reinterpretation of the so called 'Teutonic estoc' from the Princes Czartoryski Collection in Cracow, Poland Maciej Talaga, ARMA-PL Abstract – The paper aims at reinterpreting the so called ‘Teutonic estoc’ (inventory number: MNK XIV-49) from the Czartoryski Princes Collection, Cracow, Poland. Due to the weapon’s unusual construction it has been necessary to draw up precise documentation – written, drawn and photographic. It has been supplemented with research in historical sources and scholarly literature on the subject. The results obtained indicate that the researched weapon is not a typical estoc. It seems that it is a specialized anti-armour sword (Kampfschwert in German) designed for fighting against a heavy armoured opponent in judicial combat. If this conclusion were correct, the ‘Teutonic estoc’ from Cracow would be the only known artefact of this kind to have survived from the Middle Ages. In order to falsify this hypothesis the artefact’s authenticity has been examined. An analysis of Royal Inventory records spanning from the year 1475 to 1792 and younger remarks about the researched weapon in press, private letters and scholarly literature has been conducted and briefly reported hereby. Its results seem to indicate that it is not a hoax. I. Body Techniques of Combat: The Depiction of a Personal Fighting System in the Fight Books of Hans Talhofer (1443-1467 CE) ERIC BURKART If we turQWR³ERGLHVLQEDWWOH´LQWKH0iddle Ages, the question how fighters of the past actually used their bodies in combat is a quite obvious one. Unfortunately, it is difficult to answer. Only very few medieval sources document movements in a way that would allow a detailed reconstruction. Additionally, the interpretation of these sources greatly involves the interpUHWHU¶s own perception of her body and movement, a knowledge that is usually subconscious and difficult to communicate to a (reading) scientific community. From the point of view of cultural history, this hermeneutic framework and the resulting communicational gap is crucial to any scientific approach towards PHGLHYDO³WHFKQLTXHVRIWKHERG\´.1 The most promising historical documents concerning body techniques of combat are the late medieval and early modern fight books.2 In this contribution, I shall focus on a series of five 15th century manuscripts ascribed to the fencing master Hans Talhofer. Interpersonal physical violence is a human practice that is documented throughout the history of mankind. Yet, the violent action itself is volatile and only its material traces can be subject to a historical inquiry. -

Duel of Theobald versus Seitz – Germany, 1370 translation & commentary by Jeffrey Hull This particular account of judicial duel (kampf) from Germany of 1370 is found in Volume II Chapter 14 of the fechtbuch (fight-book) De Arte Athletica (aka Liber Artis Athleticae – Cod.icon. 393 – circa 1542) by that citizen of Augsburg and fencer called Paulus Hector Mair. Although his Latin recounting is nearly two centuries after the event, it does read with authority, as Mair was the practically peerless fencing historian of 16th Century Germany (1). A similar account is found in Augsburger Chronik (circa 1457) by Sigismund Meisterlin (2). Mair’s account is highly interesting, not just for its description of martial techniques, but also for its description of legal proceeding and dueling-day ritual. And indeed, all that Mair describes here is readily corroborated by, or does not conflict with, other fight-books. It is one of many accounts from late 14th Century, during the time when the eventual grandmaster of Kunst des Fechtens, Johann Liechtenauer, must have been ascending as a young knight and martial artist. My translation is based upon Josef Würdinger’s summarising German translation of Mair’s original Latin recounting, but with comparison to Mair’s original made to corroborate and clarify certain points. Würdinger’s translation was reprinted recently (2006) by Hans Edelmaier (see Bibliography). Lastly – I have made occasional interpolations and several textual notes, as such seemed needed to make these events more comprehensible to the modern reader. ~ ***** In the course of one of the feuds which Duke Stephan had to endure and counter by arrests in Swabia (3) during the years 1369 and 1370, this did happen: A Swabian noble, Theobald Giß von Gißenberg, accused his peer, Seitz von Altheim, of robbery (4) in presence of the Duke. -

Kellett The medieval fencing manual is a valuable if little-studied source of informa- tion on the injuries likely to be caused in medieval combat since it provides instruction on techniques to be used with a wide variety of weapons, including the sword, as well as in unarmed combat. The majority of such texts date to the early fifteenth century and later, and (with one exception) the earliest extant fencing manuals of medieval Europe all come from the German-speaking region.1 Of these German manuals, all but one draw directly or indirectly on the fourteenth-century teachings of Johannes Liechtenauer.2 Although no direct written record of Liechtenauer’s fencing system exists, his influence on the development of medieval German fencing cannot be overstated;3 his 1 See: Jeffrey Forgeng and Alex Kiermayer, “‘The Chivalric Art’: German Martial Arts Treatises of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance,” in The Cutting Edge: Studies in Ancient and Medieval Combat, ed. FightCamp 2016 Information Pack Welcome to FightCamp 2016! The UK’s most popular Historical European Martial Arts event. FightCamp is an annual event, brought to you by Schola Gladiatoria and our dedicated team of Marshals. The event will be held at The Grange, Frog Lane, Balsall Common, CV7 7FP. On site facilities include a shower block, toilets, bar, sports hall and extensive fields. Classes and tournmanets will be held in the sports hall or adjacent fields, as indicated on your timetable. Merchandise All FightCamp merchandise will be available to order online in advance of the event. If you want to wear your official clothing to the event, make sure you place your order in time for it to arrive with you before you leave home. Online ordering means that you are able to ensure you get the top you want, in the colour you want and in the correct size. Registration When you arrive on site report directly to FightCamp reception to sign in and receive your wristband. This must be worn at all times during the event. Reception will open from 6pm on the 11th August, as will the campsite and parking area. Please note - visitors and spectators are not permitted on site, and attendees must be over 18 years of age. Only attendees who have booked and had their places confirmed in advance may attend. Classes & Free Sparring A copy of the class timetable is included at the end of this document. There will be a copy on display in reception too. But for your convenience, please try and bring your own printout. -
