The Kindergarten Team is so happy to have a new batch of cuties! We had a wonderful first week teaching rules, procedures, and what school is all about. We played, we sang, we read books, and much more. This month we will be focusing on writing and reading our names and our classmates’ names, starting our Saxon Phonics with letters Oo and Ll, then Gg and Hh, and introducing our awesome new math curriculum! We look forward to this new year with you and your children!

So much is happening in first grade. The children are all busy learning classroom procedures and routines. We will be having a Parent Information Night on Tuesday, August 13th from 5:00-5:30. Please try to attend. All first-grade teachers will be presenting important information about your child’s classroom. We look forward to seeing you there! We are jumping right into learning! In math we are beginning the first lessons in our math curriculum, Ready Math. During our math instruction students will be developing greater understanding of mathematical models and strategies while working with partners, independently, writing about their mathematical thinking, and whole class discourse. We are excited to jump right in! In reading, we are working on saying all the sounds in a word. This is part of phonemic awareness or the ability to manipulate sounds in words. This important skill is the foundation of learning to read. You can support your child in this area by playing word games as you drive in the car. Say a word such as cat and ask your child to say all the sounds in the word (/c/ /a/ /t/) or say a word and ask your child to think of words that rhyme with it. We are all looking forward to a fabulous year filled with fun and learning in first grade!

The second-grade teachers would like to welcome all of the students and families back to school! We enjoyed meeting all of you at Meet and Greet. This month we are teaching classroom and school procedures and expectations. Please continue to review these with your child at home to ensure a successful transition back to school. In addition, we will be covering story elements, proper nouns and

pronouns, as well as practicing handwriting and writing in complete sentences. In math we will be

covering adding and subtraction fluency and story problems. If at any time you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s teacher.

2nd Grade Team

Welcome back! It has been a great week; we are getting into full swing! Students are all aware of our rules and procedures and are working hard to follow them.

Thank you so much for sending in the necessary supplies. Please be sure to communicate with your child daily about school. They should be practicing their spelling words and math facts daily as well as reading. We look forward to a wonderful year of learning and getting to know your child! We hope to see you at th Open House on Tuesday, August 13 at 5:45pm.

We are very excited to get to know our new fourth graders this school year! This first week are learning classroom rules and procedures and getting to know our classmates.

We are beginning our new math program, Ready Math. Please work on multiplication and division facts as your fourth grader should know them or be practicing them. It makes multi-step problems so much easier! Next week we will begin teaching our reading standards.

Parent Information Night is Tuesday, August 13 from 5:45-6:30. Your child’s teacher will have a short presentation and will be available to answer questions. We hope to see you all there!

Hello 5th Grade Families!

We have made it through the start of a new school year! As we continue to enforce routines and procedures, transition to academic standards, and settle into a daily schedule, it is a pleasure getting to know your children! If you haven’t created an account on PowerSchool to monitor your child’s grades, please do so right away! We look forward to the year ahead and appreciate your support!

Welcome to The Gold Sixth-Grade Team! Go Coyotes! Go Gold-n-Red! The Gold Team consists of Five Fantastic Teachers: Mrs. Dicochea, Mrs. Giddings, Mrs. Passet, Mrs. Taylor and Mrs. Velarde

August will be a busy month where we will be working diligently to get to know our students and reviewing rules and procedures. We will provide our students with information that will assist them with their educational success. Although, in all of our efforts, some students will have difficulty transitioning and adapting to different teachers. While sixth grade teachers have common expectations to create a consistent education for your child, there will also be unique experiences in each classroom based on the needs of the students. It is essential that we work together to help your child fully understand each teacher’s individual expectations and guidelines. Please continue to ask your child questions about his/her experiences in middle school. We look forward to working with our parents in order to make this year a positive and memorable year. A few reminders: *Students and parents have been provided with access to PowerSchool. Please help us facilitate your child in taking personal responsibility for tracking and maintaining their progress. *Your child’s attendance is important for educational success. *Following rules and procedures will help your child avoid consequences such as detention, suspension and expulsion. *Anza Trail offers a Positive Incentive Program (PIP) for students who earn a 3.0 GPA or higher, and with no D’s or F’s,. They must also make sure they do not earn a spot in ISS or get suspended. Parents will need to sign a permission slip to allow students to participate in possible field trips, movies, and/or extra time outside.

We welcome any questions or concerns you may have. Please refer to our team letter we provided the first day of school or Anza Trail’s webpage for contact information.

Welcome back! We’re excited for another great year of reading in the Reading Lab here at Anza Trail!

In the Reading Lab, we work with students from NEW SCHOOL YEAR Kinder-3rd grade. Students will complete their I-

NEW JOURNEY READY assessments during the first month of school. This assessment and teacher input will allow us to determine which students will benefit most from reading support in the ATS Reading Lab. If NEW BOOKS AND ADVENTURES your child qualifies for Reading Lab support, you will receive a letter before classes in the lab begin. The Reading Lab is thrilled to meet these students and provide the support they need to improve their IN THE LIBRARY reading skills. The Reading Lab will help student’s improve their phonological awareness, phonics, ACCEPTING DONATIONS ALL YEAR fluency, and comprehension.

(BOOKS, CRAYONS, CONSTRUCTION PAPER) Helpful Reading Hint: ALL STUDENTS benefit from reading or being read to for at least 20 minutes a

day. This reading will expose them to more than 1.5 million words per year! This gives them the chance to build their vocabulary which will improve their fluency and comprehension.

Respectfully, Adriana Rios Anza Trail Reading Specialist

Welcome back! The band program hopes everyone had a restful summer and we are excited to have everyone back! Make sure you check out the Anza Bands website for all information and resources you need! http://anzabands.weebly.com This month we are introducing new instruments to 5th graders and helping them select what instrument to play for this year and hopefully the upcoming years! We are bringing all the music stores from Southern AZ to YOU this Aug 22 at 5-6:30pm at the SIS gym. Hopefully it will save you a trip! Also that Saturday, Aug 24 from 9a-12n, all our 5th grade band & orchestra members, and their parents, will be participating in the annual SUSD Instrument Jumpstart where we bring experts on each instrument to teach them the basics and get them going! There will also be a presentation for parents on what to expect now that their student has joined the band/orchestra. We end the entire event off with the young musician's FIRST performance on their instrument. It's a great morning of fun, music, & community. See ya there!

On the middle school front, we are gearing up for a great year! It's a trip year! Pending board approval, we will be traveling to Disney Land in the end of the year. Be on the lookout for a parent meeting in September.

Welcome back Coyotes! It’s going to be another wonderful year of magical music making in the music room. It is truly magical when children create music themselves and here at Anza Trail School of Wonder & Magic, students will experience music by singing, moving, listening, acting, dancing and playing many different types of instruments. Students in the 5th grade will be making their choice between Choir, Orchestra, or Band. All students in the 3rd-5th grade who love to sing are eligible to join the After-School Choir Enrichment Class (no experience necessary) which meets every Tuesday & Thursday from 2:30pm to 3:30pm. Students interested must get a registration form from Mrs. Newton & turn it in by Sept. 10th with the Enrichment Class fee of $40 per semester per child for new members which includes a choir T-Shirt to wear at performance and at school. Returning choir members will receive a $10 discount! For more information on Elementary Music & Choir, please email Mrs. Newton at [email protected].

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year!

In 6th grade, students will learn about the amazing and beautiful culture in Latin countries around the world. They will explore dance, music, food, and holidays. Students will then be tasked with creating a presentation using Google slides to teach their classmates about a Spanish Speaking country of their choice. It will be an exciting time for them to start the exploration into the Latin world!

In 7th grade, students are introduced to the basics of the Spanish language. The development of vocabulary and grammatical structures enables students to communicate effectively in familiar daily routines. Study of diverse Hispanic nations and cultures increases an understanding of the global community and enhances cross cultural communication.

In 8th grade, students will continue the exploration of all aspects of communication, including the development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Satisfactory completion of the course with an A or B provides students with high school credit and prepares them for entrance into Spanish II at the secondary level. It is imperative that students come to class each and every day prepared to learn and participate in class.

I look forward to a successful 2019-2020 school year and to working with your child in class. If you need to get in contact with me, I can be reached at [email protected].

Helping your Child with School Anxiety

Welcome to another fabulous school year at Anza Trail! While the beginning of the school year is an exciting time for many, it can be a time that causes stress in many students as well. Here are some tips to help your nervous child get in the groove of coming to school.

 Listen to them and validate their feelings. Let your child know that you hear them and it is ok to be worried.  Draw on past experiences. Help your child remember times when they had positive experiences going to school or when they overcame nervous feelings in the past.  Allow them to bring a small comfort object to school, such as a family photo or a “lucky” necklace.  Prepare the night before. Help your child pick out their outfit, get their lunch ready, and have their shoes and backpack ready by the door.  Create a morning mantra. Pick a positive phrase your child can say each day such as “I’ve got this!” or “I’m going to have a great day!”  Make mornings fun! Play upbeat music while getting ready or perhaps put a favorite TV show on in the background.

Have a wonderful 19/20 school year! You’ve got this!
