Ethnocentric Bias in African Philosophy Vis-A-Vis Asouzu’S Ibuanyidanda Ontology
Filosofia Theoretica: Journal of African Philosophy, Culture and Religions ETHNOCENTRIC BIAS IN AFRICAN PHILOSOPHY VIS-A-VIS ASOUZU’S IBUANYIDANDA ONTOLOGY Umezurike John EZUGWU, M.A Department of Philosophy, University of Calabar, Calabar, Nigeria Abstract This paper is of the view that it is not bad for the Africans to defend their philosophy and their origin, as against the claims and positions of the few African thinkers, who do not believe that African philosophy exists, and a great number of the Westerners, who see nothing meaningful in their thoughts and ideas, but in doing so, they became biased and elevated their philosophy and relegated other philosophies to the background. This charge of ethnocentrism against those who deny African philosophy can also be extended to those African philosophers who in a bid to affirm African philosophy commit the discipline to strong ethnic reduction. This paper using Innocent Asouzu’s Ibuanyidanda ontology, observes that most of the African scholars are too biased and self aggrandized in doing African philosophy, and as such have marred the beauty of African philosophy, just in the name of attaching cultural value to it. Innocent Asouzu’s Ibuanyidanda ontology is used in this paper to educate the Africans that in as much as the Westerners cannot do without them, they too cannot do without Westerners. This paper therefore, is an attempt to eradicate ethnocentrism in and beyond Africa in doing philosophy through complementarity and mutual understanding of realities, not in a polarized mindset but in relationship to other realities that exist. Japanese Aesthetics and Gustav Klimt: in Pursuit of a New Voice Svitlana Shiells
Strand 2. Art Nouveau and Politics in the Dawn of Globalisation Japanese Aesthetics and Gustav Klimt: In Pursuit of a New Voice Svitlana Shiells Abstract At the end of the nineteenth century, Japonisme—an artistic lingua franca—became one of the most organic, overarching components of Gustav Klimt’s new art. This paper draws parallels between Gustav Klimt’s Portrait of Sonja Knips and It ō Jakuch ū’s print Golden Pheasant and Bamboo in Snow . The discovery of an unexpectedly close dialogue between Klimt and Jakuch ū and the striking similarity of the formal language of the two works supports the paper’s thesis that It ō Jakuch ū’s print is the primary source of influence behind the conception and execution of the portrait and, by extension, that Klimt’s engagement with Japanese stimuli is one of the main engines behind his creative pursuit, starting at the end of the 1890s. This discovery challenges preconceived notions and existing concepts and illustrates the impossibility of understanding Klimt’s heritage comprehensively and adequately without examining the role of Japonisme in it. According to Hermann Bahr, the Viennese encountered the presence of “Japonisme in all the arts,” which were “impossible to understand without bearing in mind the influence of Japanese art.” 1 Japonisme indeed became a Zeitgeist in fin de siècle Vienna and, in the visual arts, Gustav Klimt was its main advocate. -

Semester: Spring 2020 Japanese Design Aesthetics and Visual Culture Section 1 Instructor/Title Dr. Seonga Kim-Lee / Assistant Professor Office/Building Room 712, Main Building (Nakamiya Campus) 【Course Outline / Description】 This course aims at understanding Japanese aesthetics, culture, and society through the twentieth-century design. Students will examine broad range of design examples in terms of reflective of the social, political, and economic culture of the time. The course will begin by exploring Japanese aesthetics and prewar design and continues by discussing contemporary design with regard to the emergence of design, made in Japan, pop culture, and disaster and design. Students need to be familiarized with Japanese terms related to aesthetics and culture at the beginning of this course in order to understand how religion and philosophy are reflected in Japanese art and design. Through lectures, discussions, presentations, and field trips, students will understand how traditional Japanese aesthetics reflected on contemporary design and how individual Japanese designers uniquely delivered traditional aesthetics to international style. BOOK REVIEWS Truth and Method, second, revised edition, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Translation revised by Joel Weinshcimer and Donald Marshall, (New York: Crossroad Publishers, 1989), pp.xxxviii + 594. Reviewed by Ted Vaggalis, University of Kansas. Truth and Method by H.-G. Gadamer is one of the great works in contemporary continental philosophy. However its importance has only recently begun to be widely appreciated by the American philosophical community. Its slow reception has been due primarily to its initial English translation, which was so poorly done that it contributed to frequent misunderstandings of Gadamer's work. This second edition, edited and revised by Joel Weinsheimer and Donald Marshall, is a welcome event that finally provides an accurate access to H.-G. Gadamer's magnum opus. Not only has the translation been cleaned up and made coherent, footnotes have been updated and new ones added that refer the reader to recent books and articles, by the author and others, that bear on the issues at hand. Gadamer himself has gone over the translation and added points of clarification as well, (xviii) Also, Weinsheimer and Marshall have written a brief preface that explains many of the key German words and concepts crucial for understanding Gadamer's analyses, (xi—xix) On the whole, this is a more critical translation that enables one to see how well Gadamer's account of philosophical hermeneutics has held up over the years since its publication in 1960. The new edition of Truth and Method is an excellent opportunity for recalling the book's overall argument. Perhaps the best place to start is with the correction of a common misunderstanding of Gadamer's project. -

4 Mexico and Spain on the Eve of Encounter In comparative history, the challenge is to identify significant factors and the ways in which they are related to observed outcomes. A willingness to draw on historical data from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean will be essen- tial in meeting this challenge. — Walter Scheidel (2016)1 uring the decade before Spain’s 1492 dynastic merger and launching of Dtrans- Atlantic expeditions, both the Aztec Triple Alliance and the joint kingdoms of Castile and Aragón were expanding their domains through con- quest. During the 1480s, the Aztec Empire gained its farthest flung province in the Soconusco region, located over 500 miles (800 km) from the Basin of Mexico near the current border between Mexico and Guatemala. It was brought into the imperial domain of the Triple Alliance by the Great Speaker Ahuitzotl, who ruled from Tenochtitlan, and his younger ally and son- in- law Nezahualpilli, of Texcoco. At the same time in Spain, the allied Catholic Monarchs Isabela of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragón were busy with military campaigns against the southern emirate of Granada, situated nearly the same distance from the Castilian heartland as was the Soconusco from the Aztec heartland. The unification of the kingdoms ruled by Isabela and Ferdinand was in some sense akin to the reunifi- cation of Hispania Ulterior and Hispania Citerior of the early Roman period.2 The conquest states of Aztec period Mexico and early modern Spain were the product of myriad, layered cultural and historical processes and exchanges. Both were, of course, ignorant of one another, but the preceding millennia of societal developments in Mesoamerica and Iberia set the stage for their momentous en- counter of the sixteenth century.
