Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} The Poetry of Richard Milhous Nixon by Richard M. Nixon Four Poems by Richard Milhous Nixon. Abraham Lincoln, John Quincy Adams, and Jimmy Carter all published collections of poetry—and I don’t mean to diminish their stately, often tender contributions to arts and letters by what follows. But the simple fact of the matter is, their poetical efforts pale in comparison to Richard Nixon, who was, and remains, the most essential poet-president the United States of America has ever produced. The Poetry of Richard Milhous Nixon , a slim volume compiled by Jack S. Margolis and published in 1974, stands as a seminal work in verse. Comprising direct excerpts from the Watergate tapes—arguably the most fecund stage of Nixon’s career—it fuses the rugged rhetoric of statesmanship to the lithe contours of song, all rendered in assured, supple, poignant free verse. Below, to celebrate Presidents’ Day, are four selections from this historic chapbook, which has, lamentably, slipped out of print. THE POSITION The position is To withhold Information And to cover up This is Totally true. You could say This is Totally untrue. TOGETHER We are all In it Together. We take A few shots And It will be over. Don’t worry. I wouldn’t Want to be On the other side Right now. IN THE END In the end We are going To be bled To death. And in the end, It is all going To come out anyway. Then you get the worst Of both worlds. The power of Nixon’s poems was duly recognized by his peers—other writers, most notably Thomas Pynchon, have used them as epigraphs.

2007-01-09-NIX Edward Nixon Page 1 of 44 January 9, 2007 Timothy Naftali I want to welcome you all to this oral history with Edward Nixon for the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum. It's January 9, 2007, what would have been Richard Nixon's 94th birthday. I'm Timothy Naftali, incoming Director of the library. I'm joined today with Paul Musgrave, my assistant, and John Powers, head of the Nixon Materials Project staff in Washington, D.C. Mr. Nixon, thank you for joining us today. Edward Nixon It's an honor. Timothy Naftali John, would you begin with the first question? John Powers I was kind of interested in learning a little bit about Whittier and what the store was like. Edward Nixon When they moved from Yorba Linda to Whittier, eventually my dad decided that they needed to establish a base that could take advantage of traffic that was bound to grow, as he saw it. The road was called El Camino Real, which was Father Junipero Serra Trail connecting all the missions on the California coast. And El Camino Real was also Whittier Boulevard in that place between La Habra and Whittier. It's about three miles from Whittier and about halfway between Whittier and La Habra. The Leffingwell Ranch, which was south of the boulevard and the Murphy Ranch, which was north of the boulevard, were citrus ranches, essentially. Mexican labor was everywhere, the pickers, the food pickers, and mules and mule-drawn wagons hauled the cases of harvest. The store initially was a small building and two gasoline pumps, called the service station Nixon's Service.

Introduction The Richard Nixon Oral History Project at California State University, Fullerton’s Center for Oral and Public History documents through oral histories the memories of those who knew Richard Nixon in, largely, his pre-political and, to some degree, his political and post-presidential years. The overwhelming majority of the interviews were done by California State University, Fullerton students in oral history courses under the supervision of Dr. Harry P. Jeffrey in the 1969, 1970, and 1971 academic years. The transcribed interviews and the original taped interviews in this collection are available for use by researchers. Accordingly, the abstracts available online summarize each oral history to better facilitate researchers’ assessment of their needs and topical interests.
