LYRIC STAGE PRESENTS Funny Girl with full orchestra starring Kristin Dausch of Broadway’s Rising Stars September 11-20, 2009 at the Irving Arts Center’s Carpenter Performance Hall

Lyric Stage, Dallas County’s only locally produced professional musi- cal theater company, presents Jule Styne, Bob Merrill and Isobel Len- nart’s FUNNY GIRL September 11-20, 2009 in the Irving Arts Center’s Carpenter Performance Hall. Tickets, priced from $25-$50, can be Or- dered Online by Clicking Here or by calling 972-252-2787.

In The Ziegfeld Follies, in Hollywood films and on the radio, Fanny Brice was one of the most celebrated entertainers of her time. Her ca- reer spanned from comedienne to Vaudeville star. FUNNY GIRL is her story. To play the role of Fanny Brice, Lyric Stage has cast Kristin Dausch, a June 2009 graduate of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. Ms. Dausch was selected to perform in Broadway’s Rising Stars concert at Town Hall in this past July. Cabaret Scenes’ Melody Breyer-Grell declared “There are many that might be ready for Broadway or at least summer stock, but the one I would put my bets on was Kristin Dausch. Singing "Men," a tune from the failed So Long, 174th Street, she delivered a star turn worthy of Carol Burnett. A truly individual character, with an amusingly put upon and almost bent posture, she belted this tune in a shockingly secure and brilliantly loose performance, making it her own. If this gal does not make it big, then there is no justice.” Suzanna Bowling of The Times Square Chronicle wrote “My favorite by far was Kristin Dausch, who sang “Men” from “So Long 174th Street” and stole the show. Not only could this talented lady sing, she could act—and it was that qual- ity that made the difference.”

Playing opposite Kristin as Nicky Arnstein will be Christopher Pinnella, last seen at Lyric Stage in his critically ac- claimed performance of Billy Bigelow in CAROUSEL. Lois Sonnier Hart is Mrs. Brice and Connie Coit is her friend Mrs. Strakosh. Jeremy Dumont, Action from Lyric Stage’s WEST SIDE STORY, is Eddie Ryan. Nationally syndicated radio talk show host and Fox News contributor Mike Gallagher is vaudeville theater owner Keaney and Mark Oristano is Florenz Ziegfeld. The ensemble includes Mikey Abrams, Lon Barrera, Jillian Brown , Ben Giddings, Carlos Gomez, Alan Hanna, Sarah Harder, Babs Ipaye, Summer Kenney, Carleen Kirksey, Jackie Lengfelder, Jason Mayfield, Joy McKay, Angela Moore, Addison Faith Reed, Alex Ross, Kristi Rowan, Brittany Vance, Jordan Vaughn, Lee Jamison Wadley, Keith Warren and Jane Willingham.

Lyric Stage Founding Producer Steven Jones has reunited director Cheryl Denson and music director/conductor Jay Dias from Lyric’s critically acclaimed productions of SWEENEY TODD, CAROUSEL and THE KING AND I to helm this production of FUNNY GIRL. Like the aforementioned musicals, this production of FUNNY GIRL will feature a full orchestra playing the original Broadway orchestrations. Tracy Jordan will choreograph the production with lighting de- sign by Julie Moroney, scenic design by Bryan Wofford, costume design by Drenda Lewis and sound design by Bill Eickenloff. Margaret J. Soch is the stage manager.

FUNNY GIRL opened at Broadway’s Winter Garden theater on March 26, 1964 and ran for 1,348 performances. Jule Styne’s hit-filled score includes People, I'm the Greatest Star, Don't Rain on My Parade and The Music That Makes Me Dance. FUNNY GIRL launched Barbara Streisand to super-stardom. Lyric Stage’s production will feature a full orchestra.

FUNNY GIRL runs September 11-20, 2009 at the Irving Arts Center’s Carpenter Performance Hall with performances on September 11, 12, 17, 18 & 19 @ 8:00 PM and September 13 & 20 @ 2:30 PM. Tickets, priced from $25-$50, can be Ordered Online by Clicking Here or by calling 972-252-2787.

“Takin’ a Break from Sex” Created and performed by Andy and Joleen Mullins

A clever and brazenly funny show!

In Takin’ a Break from Sex, Andy and Joleen Mullins have taken marriage, friendship, mid- life crisis, and absurdities of relationships, along with some silliness and have crafted them into original comedic sketches. This married comedy couple invites you to sit back and en- joy their fun romp through scenes emphasizing that opposite sex perceptions are a myriad of crazy conversations and hilarious situations.

Both are experienced actors and comics. Andy is well known in the Dallas/Fort Worth theatre community for his work in stage, film, television, and commercials. Joleen lived (and performed) in Los Angeles for 14 years before returning to Dallas. The two met while performing together in a comedy dinner theatre group. The sparks flew, and they married, thus gaining access to a wealth of new comedy sketch material. Rated R (just a little naughty).

Theatre Three is in the pursuit of happiness in both Theatre Three and Theatre Too for the 2009/2010 Season. Everyone has a different idea of happiness and how to get it: living a full life onstage, winning a spelling bee, merging two very different lives for romantic suc- cess, surviving all of life’s changes with grace, creating something entertaining at the very last minute, treasuring America’s musical heritage, learning how to dance again, celebrating the holidays with wild abandon, paying tribute to a legendary talent, finding that one true love, and conquering personal demons. Theatre Three’s 2009/2010 season encompasses it all. Woody Guthrie’s American Song in Theatre Too kicks off the 2009/2010 season on June 19, 2009, with the Theatre Too season concluding on April 18, 2010. Theatre Three’s 2009-2010 subscription season begins with The Royal Family on June 30, 2009 and concludes May 23, 2010. Playing In Theatre Three:

The Royal Family the landmark comedy by George S. Kaufman & Edna Ferber June 30 – August 30 No show cheered up New York more in 1927 than this madcap comedy of a celebrated family of charismatic (but chaotic) actors, their agents, their lovers, and their put-upon servants. Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago recently revived this comic jewel leading reviewers to say “highly entertaining … like a backstage glass of cheap, opening night champagne, it fizzes deliciously on the tongue… pleasingly intoxicating….a love-letter to, and satire of, life in the theater.” The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee The recent Broadway musical hit by William Finn and Rachel Sheinkin September 24 - October 25 A Tony Award winning team puts six adolescent hopefuls at the mike for the most important chance of their lives – a chance to stand out and fit in by winning the spelling bee championship. This Broadway hit began as non-musical entertainment devised by an improvisational troupe: improvisation remains embedded in its hugely entertaining format, adorned with the musical’s brilliant score sung by delightfully offbeat characters. Talley’s Folly Pulitzer Prize-winning romantic comedy by Lanford Wilson November 19 – December 20 This important, enchanting play shows one evening in the courtship of two unlikely lovers, Sally Talley and Matt Friedman. Set during other uncertain times (World War II), this American couple -- from different religious backgrounds and even more different life experiences -- becomes brave enough to seek happiness joining their lives together (despite all) in this hopeful, uplifting 1980 Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Amy’s View a serious comedy by Sir David Hare December 31 - January 31 An epic play covering twenty years played by just six actors in two simple sets, this magnificent theatrical achievement has been called a political play, a social comedy, a saga of surviving devastated finances, a study of the changing problems of women, and finally, as New York critic John Simon summed up “It is, simply, brilliantly about life…and being about life, it is about surprises all along the way….attempts a truer understanding of existence.” It’s dazzling. Bedroom Farce the ingenious, marriage disaster comedy by Alan Ayckbourn February 25 – March 28 TThe stage set has three bedrooms in which we see four couples whose intertwined lives ricochet between passion and indiffer- ence in this breakthrough tale penned by England’s most successful contemporary . Written while he was artistic direc- tor of the Stephen Joseph Theatre, (a theatre-in-the-round about the same size as Theatre Three), this play went on to the West End and Broadway where critics and audiences alike cheered Ayckbourn’s unique inventiveness, his wit, and his cheerful diagno- sis of the collapse of middle class morality. [title of show] (under strong consideration) an original Broadway musical with music and lyrics by Jeff Bowen and book by Hunter Bell April 22 – May 23 In the uproarious tradition of backstage musicals, this 2006 off-Broadway hit follows two theater geeks as they try to pursue their idea of happiness: create a really great musical just in time to make the deadline for a theater festival. The songwriting team con- siders all sorts of fabulous ideas as they try to cobble together this last minute production, discovering all of the hilarious back- stage drama of putting on a show. Show times: Thursdays at 7:30 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. and Sundays at 7:30 pm. Tickets: Single Tickets: $10 -- $40; Subscriptions: $129.50 -- $205.50 Tickets for all performances may be purchased by calling Theatre Three’s box office at 214-871-3300. 15 Return to Index Page

Playing in Theatre Too:

Woody Guthrie’s American Song a new musical by Peter Glazer June 19 – July 26 In the last Great Depression, songwriter Woody Guthrie travelled from the Dustbowl to California to New York writing what he learned about our country. This exhilarating musical captures his enduring and deeply felt emotions about America. As The New York Times’ glowing review proclaimed, “[It] finds both the high beauty and earthy humor of Guthrie’s love affair with America.” The Dallas premiere of this exceptional musical opens the Theatre Three/Theatre Too season.

Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks a comedy by Richard Alfieri August 28 – September 20 A widow decides to reawaken her ballroom dancing skills and finds a young man to tutor her in her Florida condominium. The two clash both comically and dramatically in a series of scenes that escalate the importance of dance as a way to bring order into their disordered lives. The original cast included acting great (shortly before her death) and TV’s and Broadway’s David Hyde Pierce.

Snake in the Grass a comedy mystery ghost-story by Alan Ayckbourn October 23 – November 15 Where there's a will, there's a war, so they say. When a father dies (perhaps helped on his way by his daughter quadrupling his pills and giving him "only a little push" down the stairs) one wonders: could her actions have been prompted by his changing his will? And who will inherit the estate? That older, colder ex-pat sister, Annabel, who never lifted a finger to help? Leave it to the brilliant Ayckbourn to surprise us and make us laugh at the extreme tensions of contentious family life – and death!

Another Night Before Christmas a musical tale by Grennan and Okimoto November 27 – December 20 According to one reviewer from the musical’s premiere, “Another Night Before Christmas should be required viewing for people who have reached the stage of no longer believing in miracles or Santa! It’s insightful while delightfully entertaining and gives us cause to examine our own conscience when it comes to allowing ourselves the indulgence in merriment that Christmas brings.” Theatre Three audiences first enjoyed the work of this new playwright-composer team when A Dog’s Life proved a surprise hit of the 2007-2008 season.

Songs of the Redhead, The Music of Danny Kaye a tribute to a legendary performer by Don Alan Croll January 7 – January 24 A fan’s ultimate tribute to the object of his admiration, this one-man show contains the amazing songs (many by Kaye’s brilliant wife, Sylvia Fine) that fueled the legendary career of the versatile, charismatic, Brooklyn-born star of stage and screen. Kaye’s respect for musicians led him to perform countless charity performances benefitting musical causes as well as famously raising money for world children through UNICEF. But it is the high velocity entertaining character of Kaye’s performances that are perfectly captured in this loving tribute by Dallas’ admired cantor, Don Alan Croll.

I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change the annual return of the perfect revue by DiPietro and Roberts January 29 – February 28 Every year we wonder if there are still Dallas citizens or visitors who have not yet seen this signature production. It’s amaz- ing! Every year the performances sell out, delighting audiences, performers and staff. Through hilarious songs and sketches, the authors have crafted an enduringly entertaining look at all stages of courtship and marriage, that ultimate “pursuit of happiness”. As is the tradition, the revue will return over the Valentine season.

Bill W. and Dr. Bob the story behind the start of A.A. by Stephen Bergman and Janet Surrey March 26 – April 18 “An insightful new play." -New York Times / "Bill W. and Dr. Bob is getting standing ovations!" – Reuters / "Paints an endearing por- trait of friendship and human weakness with warm humor." -New Yorker/ "The sleeper hit of the season!" - NYTheatre.com. The auditions for The Secret Affairs of Mildred Wild by Paul Zindel will be Sept 12 Saturday 1pm-4pm with a possible call back on Sept 13 Sunday at 7pm-9pm. Performances 10/9/09-11/1/09

In the tiny living quarters behind the Greenwich Village candy store which she operates with her husband, crowded with her forty-year collection of movie magazines, Mildred Wild has virtually escaped from reality into the dream world conjured up by the 3,000 movies she has eagerly devoured. And when the outside world does intrude—via her husband; his meddling sister; their hard-boiled landlady; the mincing butcher from next door; or the foreman of the wrecking crew sent to tear down the building—Mildred meets each crisis with a hilarious fantasy-scene drawn from her precious lode of old movies. As the action moves swiftly ahead to its delightfully unpre- dictable climax, Mildred's life is further complicated by such unlikely visitors as a bulldozer, a nun, King Kong, and a super efficient TV camera crew, all adding to the merriment and, ultimately, to the poignancy which infuses the play and the touching, funny escapades of its kooky, lovable and totally enchanting heroine..

Roles available: Most characters appear in Mildred’s fantasies as different movie characters as well and their primary role Bertha Gayle- Mildred’s Landlady who is having an affair with Roy Wild (30’s 50’s) she thinks of herself as a cougar Helen Wild- Mildred’s sister in law (40’s -60’s). Always after Mildred to live in reality…. a com- plainer Carroll Chatham (male) - Mildred’s butcher and friend. He goes to movies with Mildred and ap- pears in many of her movie fantasies as many different characters. (30’s -50’s) Sister Cecilia- (20 and up) – She is offering Mildred and Roy a place to live if evicted Miss Manley- Hollywood reporter type who is delivering prizes from a game show to Mildred (20 and up) Rex Bulby- paparazzi- with Miss Manly, takes pics and film footage of Mildred wining her prizes (20 and up) Louis Garibaldi- Film director 30 and up TV Host (20 and up) TV hostess (20 and up)

The roles of Mildred and Roy Wild have been cast

Spelling Bee: The Cast

Below is the cast list of Theatre Three’s production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spell- ing Bee. A Tony Award winning team puts six adolescent hopefuls at the mike for the most important chance of their lives – a chance to stand out and fit in by winning the spelling bee championship. This Broadway hit began as non-musical entertainment devised by an im- provisational troupe: improvisation remains embedded in its hugely entertaining format, adorned with the musical’s brilliant score sung by delightfully offbeat characters. Theatre Three’s production will be directed by Bruce R. Coleman, Theatre Three’s resident artist. The show runs September 24 – October 25, 2009.

You are cordially invited to attend an ex- traordinary performance event at the Dal- las Museum of Art on Monday evening, September 28 at 7:30 PM, celebrating an unprecedented collaboration between the Arts District Chorale, the Dallas Museum of Art and The Dallas Opera. We’re delighted to present one of the compositions Rossini intriguingly called “the sins of my old age,” the Petite Messe Solennelle (Little Solemn Mass), filled with all the exuberance and in- tensity of his beloved operas. With the unique addition of staged characters from the commedia dell’arte tradition, Rossini’s joy in the mystery and drama of the Mass will be revealed in a distinctive presentation in the DMA Atrium, beneath Dale Chihuly’s famed Hart Window. Please plan to attend, and help us welcome The Dallas Opera to a neighborhood of world-class cultural events and venues! Advance tickets are $20/$15/$5. Seating is limited. For ticket purchase and more information, please call 214.942.5085 or visit www.artsdistrictchorale.org

22nd Annual VideoFest – Announces CALL FOR ENTRIES

The VideoFest has kicked-off its CALL FOR ENTRIES and hunt for cutting-edge work for its 22nd celebration of video and electronic media.

The 22nd Annual VideoFest will be held at the Angelika Film Center Nov.5-8, 2009. It is the oldest and largest video festival in the nation and continues to ex- hibit a diverse range of works by regional, national and international video artists.

Since 1986 The Dallas Video Festival has specialized in fiercely independent, imaginative, unusual, provocative and sometimes description-defying electronic media. In fact, we're the oldest and the largest video festival in the nation. In our 22 year history, we've screened or hosted different programs ranging from imagina- tive 30-second television commercials to mesmerizing video art, compelling docu- mentaries, surrealistic animation, innovative digital features, intelligent, kid-friendly fare, thought-provoking panels and narrative shorts that surprise, inspire and enter- tain.

If your entry will push some buttons, we want you to send it in right away! There are no thematic or content restrictions. Categories include any style or genre — experimental, documentary, animation, music video, feature, multimedia. We are also accepting entries shot and finished in high definition video. Texas entries under 25 minutes are eligible for a special program called the Texas Show.

Additional festival rules and information can be located at www.videofest.org. Entry fees are $25 for members of the Video Association of Dallas, $40 for non-members, $20 for students (must provide copy of valid ID). E–mail [email protected] or call 214.428.8700 for more information. 32 Return to Index Page

What is Cooperative Arts News?

The Mission: The CAN organization was created for the purpose of helping cooperative member arts organizations build audiences by supporting each other. CAN will send notifications to list members with news of member organizations' upcoming events and other arts news of interest.

The Rules: 1. Since this is a "cooperative" of arts organizations supporting each other, member groups who would like to post notices, agree to "receive" notifications from other member groups in return. Individuals will have the option at any time to "opt-out" if they choose not to receive future notifications by e-mailing the list manager. 2. In order to preserve the integrity and quality of the postings to this list and to prevent any unwanted "Spamming," all notifications that member groups want to send through this notification list must come through the list manager. Groups simply send an e-mail notification to the list manager with a descriptive write-up and it will be sent. If there are multiple notifications that need to go out, they may be grouped together to reduce the number of e-mails that are sent to the list.

If at anytime, you would like to be removed from this e-mail list or if you are a new organization that would like to join, please e-mail the list manager and your request will be acted upon in a timely manner.

As always, thank-you for supporting the performing arts in the North Texas area!

Regards,

David Witherspoon List Manager [email protected]
