It consisted of the IJA's 35th Infantry Brigade and the 124th Infantry Regiment. It operated independently of the IJA 18th Division and saw action in several campaigns, including ghting on Borneo, the Philippines and Guadalcanal. On September 4 the the Kawaguchi Force plus the Aoba Detachment with three infantry battalions from the 2nd Division, had landed on Guadalcanal. On the night of the September 13 Kawaguchi's forces, involving the main force of the Kawaguchi Detachment (ve infantry battalions) and the remainder of the Ichiki Detachment (about 100 men), assaulted the U.S. Marine defenses around Henderson Field. A series of unsuccessful frontal attacks were undertaken by the Japanese forces over several hours while confusion gripped the ghting lines. A second eort was made later, during which part of the Detachment penetrated a corner of the aireld, but it was unable to hold on to its gains after American reserves were committed and a heavy bombardment was unleashed. Kawaguchi's forces were defeated with heavy losses and forced to retreat from the battleeld.

  • Chapter 6 - the Japanese Army's "Spirit-First Policy"
Chapter 6 - The Japanese Army's "Spirit-First Policy" "Repositioning" and "honorable deaths" In August 1942, US Marines landed on the islands of Guadalcanal and neighboring Tulagi with a force of 19,000 soldiers. The Battle of Guadalcanal was the Japanese Army's first defeat at the hands of the US military since the outbreak of the war. The Japanese garrison defending Tulagi was completely annihilated in one day's fighting. Meanwhile a Japanese Navy construction unit was building an airfield on Guadalcanal. The unit consisted of 2,200 men, but a majority of those were conscript laborers. Japan's Imperial General Headquarters hastily dispatched a naval landing party of 500 men strong plus army units 4,300 men strong, but the troop strength of the attacking American force had been badly underestimated and the Japanese were defeated. The Japanese Army's standard tactic of mass bayonet charges proved disastrous in the face of the US Marines' overwhelming advantage in firepower. Of the 916 Japanese soldiers who attacked the US military position, 777 were killed in action. Only 126 Japanese soldiers made it back to their bases alive, while the US Marines had lost 40 soldiers. In October, Imperial General Headquarters recognized the gravity of the situation and sent in the 2nd Division. The men of the 2nd Division traversed the island's unexplored jungles in order to make an all-out frontal assault on the American position, but the result was another devastating defeat. The 38th Division was also deployed to Guadalcanal, but seven of its eleven transport vessels were sunk before reaching the island.

Reloading Imperial Japanese Rifle Cartridges Part I – Reloading 6.5mm Japanese (Updated 13 September 2009) Shannon M. Zeigler Author’s Note: This is a special edition of my second revision of an article originally published in Banzai, The Japanese Militaria Collector’s Bulletin,2003 Issue 230, pp 127-30. The article is divided into two parts. Part I: Reloading the Japanese 6.5x50mm Semi-Rimmed (SR) Cartridge and Part II Reloading the 7.7x58mm Cartridge. Since my first article was published, the availability of less expensive factory ammunition offers greater cartridge choice and pricing to the casual shooter. A 20 round box of factory ammunition sells from $17.99 for P.C.I. to $38.59 for Norma (Table 1.). Reloading, however, offers the shooter per shot cost savings, custom loads, improved accuracy, and personal satisfaction1. The intent of this article is to present some of my reloading procedures for 6.5 x 50mm SR (semi-rimmed). Hereafter, referred to as the 6.5mm. I will briefly address the history of these cartridges and technical specifications, but will not cover the 161 grain round nose 6.5mm Type 30 cartridge. This article assumes the reader has a basic knowledge of reloading. There are numerous reloading manuals and websites that can address the more detailed aspects of reloading. I assume no liability and strongly encourage users to reference current reloading publications and practice all basic reloading safety. I feel safe using these methods but as I say, “your loads, your life, your choice”. The 6.5mm Japanese Cartridge (6.5 x 50mm Semi-Rimmed).
