AU that was necessary at the time of his death was to mount the photographs and complete the editorial work of pulling the book together for publication. The third volume contains additional data for many makes and models for which data on other specimens were given in Volume I. Also, much previously unavailable data on rifles is presented along with data for many handguns not before encountered . Photographs of many previously unphotographed handguns have been included as well as photographs of guns in partially disassembled condition giving a better view of their constructi on and operation. In PART I of Volume Ill , tables are prese nted on rifling characteristics of automatic pistols, revolvers and nonautomatic pistols and rifles. As an aid to identification, material has been organized into tables, arranged by caliber, number of grooves and directi on of twist. Since, as the author pointed out, the firearms examiner may often be concerned with arms of older vintage , there is an extensive discussion in PART II of less well known American made hand guns fr om the peri od 1850 to 19 10. In Section 1 o f PART III are found original pho tographs of automatic pistols, arranged by caliber.

  • International Military Cartridge Rifles and Bayonets
INTERNATIONAL MILITARY CARTRIDGE RIFLES AND BAYONETS The following table lists the most common international military rifles, their chambering, along with the most common bayonet types used with each. This list is not exhaustive, but is intended as a quick reference that covers the types most commonly encountered by today’s collectors. A Note Regarding Nomenclature: The blade configuration is listed, in parentheses, following the type. There is no precise dividing line between what blade length constitutes a knife bayonet vs. a sword bayonet. Blades 10-inches or shorter are typically considered knife bayonets. Blades over 12-inches are typically considered sword bayonets. Within the 10-12 inch range, terms are not consistently applied. For purposes of this chart, I have designated any blade over 12 inches as a sword bayonet. • The DIY STEN Gun
The DIY STEN Gun Practical Scrap Metal Small Arms Vol.3 By Professor Parabellum Plans on pages 11 to 18 Introduction The DIY STEN Gun is a simplified 1:1 copy of the British STEN MKIII submachine gun. The main differences however include the number of components having been greatly reduced and it's overall construction made even cruder. Using the simple techniques described, the need for a milling machine or lathe is eliminated making it ideal for production in the home environment with very limited tools. For obvious legal reasons, the demonstration example pictured was built as a non-firing display replica. It's dummy barrel consists of a hardened steel spike welded and pinned in place at the chamber end and a separate solid front portion protruding from the barrel shroud for display. It's bolt is also inert with no firing pin. This document is for academic study purposes only. (Disassembled: Back plug, recoil spring, bolt, magazine, sear and trigger displayed) (Non-functioning dummy barrel present on display model) Tools & construction techniques A few very basic and inexpensive power tools can be used to simulate machining actions usually reserved for a milling machine. Using a cheap angle grinder the average hobbyist has the ability to perform speedy removal of steel using a variety of cutting and grinding discs. Rather than tediously using a hacksaw to cut steel sheet, an angle grinder fitted with a 1mm slitting disc will accurately cut a straight line through steel of any thickness in mere seconds. Fitted with a 2mm disc it can be used to easily 'sculpt' thick steel into any shape in a fraction of the time it takes to manually use a hand file.

  • THE JACOB RIFLE and ITS EXPLODING PROJECTILE an Approach to Evaluating Historically Attributed Firearms and a Request for ASAC Help
THE JACOB RIFLE AND ITS EXPLODING PROJECTILE An Approach to Evaluating Historically Attributed Firearms and a Request for ASAC Help By Bob Carlson Figure 1: The Jacob rifle with bayonet, by Swinburn & Son. One of the most intriguing, unusual firearms, perhaps worthy of inclusion in Winant’s “Firearms Curiosa”, is the Jacob rifle! Be- sides having double 24-inch barrels, as well as a single barreled variant, it fired both solid and explosive bullets, designed to blow up mutinous Indian artillery caissons at long range, perhaps up to 1,400 yards (or as some feel, to the 2,000 yards to which its 5-inch- long ladder sight is graduated )! The appearance of a twenty-four- inch double barreled, deeply rifled firearm mounted with a huge bayonet with its 30-inch blade and Scottish-highland type cut-out basket guard, is bizarre and incongruous indeed (Figure 1). The “Perfected” Jacob Rifle The final design of this very unusual and innovative English rifle was completed by the quixotic General (then Major) John Ja- cob (Figure 2) in 1857, by the time of the Indian Mutiny to arm Figure 2. Engraving of Brig. General John Jacob by Thomas Lewis his special battalion of native Indian riflemen, the “Jacob Rifles” Atkinson, 1859 (Left). This marble bust resides at Taunton Shrine (eventually the 36th Jacob’s Horse). Englishman John Jacob, like Hall (right). The pedestal reads: Born at Somerset, January 11, 1812, Sir Joseph Whitworth, was renowned as a mathematician and en- he was dauntless, indefatigable, and unselfish, a born General, a gineer as well as a courageous soldier.
