Who Is The Next Latin American Idol? A WebQuest for 6th Grade Social Studies Designed by Deborah Wetherholt [email protected] Introduction | Task | Process | Evaluation | Conclusion | Credits Introduction You be the judge. We are about to select the next Latin American Idol and you will be one of our panel judges. You will learn all you can about our four final contestants and then carefully use that information to determine who you think should be the winner. Who will that great freedom fighter be? Toussaint L’Ouverture. Simon Boulivar. Miguel Hidalgo. Jose de San Martin. Who do you think has done the most to liberate Latin America? The Task Your task is to follow the process described below to gather information to convince the other judges that your choice for Latin American Idol is better than their choice. Information will be recorded on a teacher-made fact organizer. You will then prepare a presentation of your choice including why you chose that person. When all relevant information has been presented, after all the debating has been done, only then will the judges vote to select the next Latin American Idol. The Process To accomplish the task, you will need to gather information about each person and their impact on freedom in different areas of Latin American. 1. First you will explore the following web sites to gather information about each person. Record your findings on the teacher-made fact organizer provided for you. Toussaint L’Ouverture is a web site to learn about the slave who fought to free Haiti. Go to this site to learn about the “Night of Fire”. Learn about the “George Washington of South America”, Simon Bolivar . This freedom- fighter actually went to school in Europe. Learn how he returned to South America on this site. Miguel Hidalgo was a priest who fought to free Mexico. On this site you can learn how he went from a wealthy family to a poor priest. Jose de San Martin was known as “The Liberator” and was loved by his troops. This site will tell you how he gained the admiration of his troops. 2. Decide which person you feel deserves the title “Latin American Idol”. You must be able to explain why. 3. Prepare a 5 minute presentation to convince your fellow judges to agree with you. You may use any multimedia, acting, or a poster if you choose. You will debate your choice with the other judges, and will be graded using the following rubric. 4.
