Autumn 2012 A Newsletter for the Families and Friends of the Monastery of Our Lady of the Rosary The Year of Faith Last year, our Holy Father, Benedict XVI announced that from October 11, 2012 to Novem- ber 24, 2013 the Church will celebrate a Year of Faith. This invitation by the Church to deepen the gift of Faith in our lives is tremendous gift of grace! Hopefully, there will be am- ple opportunities to avail yourself of initiatives in your parishes that will help deepen this theological virtue in your life. The Holy Father wrote in the letter initiating the Year of Faith that it “is a summons to an authentic and renewed conversion to the Lord, the one Savior of the world.” We really encourage you to read the whole letter Pope Benedict XVI wrote. It is a beautiful meditation on the gift of Faith that has been given to us by God! It is entitled Porta fidei , The Door of Faith. There is a special website devoted to the Year of Faith: www.annusfidei.va . You can find the Holy Father’s letter there along with many resources for your own personal growth, for use in parishes or special groups. The Church has great hopes for us as each one of us celebrates this Year of Grace. “In our days too faith is a gift to rediscover, to cultivate and to bear witness to” because the Lord “grants each one of us to live the beauty and joy of being Christians.” Sister Mary Peter of Jesus Crucified 1916—2012 On 1 April, Palm Sunday this year, our little Sr.

  • Noahidism Or B'nai Noah—Sons of Noah—Refers To, Arguably, a Family
Noahidism or B’nai Noah—sons of Noah—refers to, arguably, a family of watered–down versions of Orthodox Judaism. A majority of Orthodox Jews, and most members of the broad spectrum of Jewish movements overall, do not proselytize or, borrowing Christian terminology, “evangelize” or “witness.” In the U.S., an even larger number of Jews, as with this writer’s own family of orientation or origin, never affiliated with any Jewish movement. Noahidism may have given some groups of Orthodox Jews a method, arguably an excuse, to bypass the custom of nonconversion. Those Orthodox Jews are, in any event, simply breaking with convention, not with a scriptural ordinance. Although Noahidism is based ,MP3], Tạləmūḏ]תַּלְמּוד ,upon the Talmud (Hebrew “instruction”), not the Bible, the text itself does not explicitly call for a Noahidism per se. Numerous commandments supposedly mandated for the sons of Noah or heathen are considered within the context of a rabbinical conversation. Two only partially overlapping enumerations of seven “precepts” are provided. Furthermore, additional precepts, not incorporated into either list, are mentioned. The frequently referenced “seven laws of the sons of Noah” are, therefore, misleading and, indeed, arithmetically incorrect. By my count, precisely a dozen are specified. Although I, honestly, fail to understand why individuals would self–identify with a faith which labels them as “heathen,” that is their business, not mine. The translations will follow a series of quotations pertinent to this monotheistic and ,MP3], tạləmūḏiy]תַּלְמּודִ י ,talmudic (Hebrew “instructive”) new religious movement (NRM). Indeed, the first passage quoted below was excerpted from the translated source text for Noahidism: Our Rabbis taught: [Any man that curseth his God, shall bear his sin.

The New York State Education Department (NYSED) collects a tremendous amount of information on New York State (NYS) schools. For the purposes of this study, quantitative NYSED data on enrollment and English Language and Mathematics Regents Examination scores are analyzed. Fifteen high schools in Long Island, New York, have a minimum 80% minority rate. Most of the minority subgroups in the schools under analysis are Black or African American and Hispanic or Latin American. Four Long Island high schools were chosen because most of their minority students are Black or African American and Hispanic or Latin American and scored in the top 33% on their Common Core English Language Arts and Algebra Regents Examinations compared to the other 11 high-minority high schools.
