Part 1 Literature Review Extract Many women experience a feeling of breast enlargement during the week prior to menstruation In women with natural menstrual cycles breast volume is smallest at mid- cycle when progesterone levels are at a minimum, volume then increases by up to 40% in the week before menstruation when progesterone levels are highest (Milligan et al., 1975, Hussain et al., 1999). This pattern of breast change for a normal cycle is illustrated in Figure 4 where breast volume is lowest (approximately 500ml) between days 9 to 17 and increases a peak (approximately 600ml) between days 21 and 25. The pattern of breast volume change is altered by the use of an oral contraceptive, breast volume is lowest at the end of menstruation and increases steadily until onset of menstruation. Milligan et al (1975) found 2 Copyright Progressive Sports Technologies Ltd 2015 breast volume increased for both oral contraceptive users and non users in the final week of their cycle, up to 100ml in non users and 66ml users. Oral contraceptive use can lead to increased breast size and was found by Jernstrom and Olsson (1997) to be a strong determinant of breast size. What becomes clear is that all of the subjects currently wear the same size bra yet their measurements vary significantly? Once the focus group was complete, the subjects were allowed to select their favourite product in any size in order for Progressive to purchase it as a gift. This was done as a test to see what size they felt they needed and so the subjects could “put their money where their mouth is” in terms of their design preferences. With the exception of subject 5, the remaining girls all ordered a similar size, with subject one happy with a 34DD but expressed her belief the E cup may fit even better (see Table 1). This exercise highlights the lack of continuity in measurement methods and Progressive’s belief is that a simple improvement in a fitting method could produce an improvement in sports bra functionality. It is important to reiterate that due to the disparity of size and shape of the subjects it is unlikely that each of the bras performs the same on each of the subjects. Progressive believes that it is important to design a sports bra that fits the client and not to try to fit the client into a highly limited number of pre defined sizes. What becomes apparent to the reader is that the intellectual property (IP) surrounding sports bras is varied and crowded, with similar patents appearing from time to time. The patents concern specific detailing (such as fasteners etc) in addition to more global concepts regarding garment make up. A number of examples of the patents identified follows. These are by no means exhaustive and may act to inspire new ideas or provide a reference for further patent searches but no more. As and when new ideas are created by the team it is expected that separate and focused patent searches and prior art searches be conducted. Much of the patent content described in this document has not been commercialised into recognisable or related product. However, some points to product currently in the market place. Some of the patents will remain in force while others will have lapsed or failed to reach granted status. The report does not provide this detail. If such detail is required specific searches must be performed. Searches have been perfromed using Google Patents, EspaceNet and the US Patent office platforms. Choosing the Perfect Bra for You Before buying a sport bra, ask yourself these questions: • What’s my regular bra size? • What’s my activity level? • Do I run/walk every day, do aerobics, take a yoga class three times a week – how active am I? • What styles do I like? You should select a bra that fits your size, activity level, and personal preferences. 2. Avoiding Chafing Chafing happens because of abrasion and moisture. When you wear a bra close to your body, after an extended time, the seams tend to run against your skin and cause abrasions. Rubbing seams combined with perspiration results in painful red marks in some very sensitive areas! You can avoid chafing by choosing seamless bras. Seamless refers to bras made using a new knitting technology that reduces or eliminates seams. The bras are made of fabrics that lift moisture away from your skin and allow it to evaporate. Selecting a bra that fits right is very important. If your bra is too loose or too tight, you’ll increase your chances of chafing. Body lubricants also reduce chafing by acting as a protective barrier between your bra and your tender skin. Use it on all chafe-prone areas before every run or walk. 3. Avoiding the Uni-Boob Look If you don’t like the one boob look you get from bras that support your breasts by means of compression, choose bras that feature molded cups, which help you maintain your shape without sacrificing support. The research method consists of a literature study based on relevant documentary records and a demonstrative analysis of graphic data collected from each reference. The features of women's under­ garments obtained from the study are as fallows: First, silhouette changes of outer garments appear to influence the type and style of a new undergarment. Second, technological development results in a new type of undergarments. Third, the development of new material appears to influence functions and design of undergarments. Fourth, social changes including the development of sports affects the changes of undergarments. As seen so far, the form or type, material, and color in undergarment diversify when fashion changes become varied and rapid. As shown before the 20th century, the importance of undergarment's type, farm, and function gradually reduces according to the changes of -women's mind due to their social participation, although it still plays a role in correcting the shape of an outer garment based on the outer silhouette. Bras give support to the breasts and prevent damage to their different components during daily activities. Previous studies have however merely focused on specific types of bras and/or shoulder straps but failed to provide specific guidelines on bra features and materials that can be used to improve the support different functions of bras. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the breast control performance of various types and designs of bra under the conditions of walking and running. Two younger women and 1 older woman (all with a bra size of 36C/80C) have participated in a wear trial to don a total of 12 different commercial bras with different design features, and a changeable bra in which 12 different variables are examined, including the materials, strap width and type of underwire. The 3D movement of the breasts in the various bra conditions during walking at a speed of 4 km/h and running at 6 km/h is recorded and then compared with the braless condition by using an 11-camera motion capture system. The percentage of change in the nipple displacement in the vertical direction relative to the clavicle displacement is used to quantify and compare the breast control performance of the bras.

Vertical breast displacement data were gathered by videotaping the first three running strides of six large busted active females recruited from local fitness centers. Multiple regression results found that the garment treatment significantly related to the breast displacement experienced by subjects during each test session [F (2,213) = 16.393; p< .0001]. Approximately 13% of the variability in breast displacement was predicted by garment, indicated by the Squared Multiple Correlation Coefficient. ANOVA results found significant subject, garment, and subject-by-garment effects. Subjects wearing garments A and B had a lower level of vertical breast displacement of .031” as compared to subjects wearing garment C with .045” of displacement.
