Health Education Thames Valley and Wessex Post-CCST Programme in Orthodontics Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth St Mary’s Hospital, Isle of Wight Bristol Dental School Introduction This is a 2 year post-CCST training programme in Orthodontics. The post is linked with Bristol Dental Hospital to provide an opportunity for guided research and additional teaching experi- ence. Details of essential competencies and qualifications are detailed in the person specifica- tion. The programme is based in hospitals in the Wessex Deanery including: HOSPITAL LOCATION Queen Alexandra Hospital Portsmouth St Mary’s Hospital Isle of Wight University of Bristol Dental School Bristol The programme will use the curriculum for specialist training in orthodontic subjects published by the SAC in Orthodontics of the Joint Committee for Postgraduate Training in Dentistry in Sep- tember 2010. This programme has been approved by the Postgraduate Dean HETV&W For this post, clinical activity is based at the Queen Alexandra Hospital site in Cosham and at outreach clinics at St Mary’s Hospital in Newport, Isle of Wight. These clinics are fully equipped with modern surgeries and full radiographic facilities. Introduction Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust is a provider of Acute Health Services under contract to a range of Purchasers in the area of the Hampshire basin and Western South Downs. The catchment is in excess of 650,000 people. The area served by the Trust is on the Solent and English Channel and includes the City of Portsmouth and the Boroughs of Gosport, Fareham and Havant extend- ing from Warsash in the west to Emsworth on the Sussex border and its northern boundaries encompass Petersfield and Liss. With the exception of the rural north, it is an essentially urban - 1 - area having grown up around the Royal Naval establishments in Portsmouth and Gosport. It now provides a wide range of modern high-tech industry and the facilities associated with a commercial port and cross Channel ferry terminal. In recent years, the Trust has consolidated services from three hospitals (St Mary's Hospital (SMH) on Portsea Island, Royal Hospital Haslar (RHH) on the Gosport Peninsula) onto a single site at the Queen Alexandra Hospital (QAH) in Cosham. A major PFI funded build at the Queen Alexandra Hospital has been completed in order to accommodate the transfer of all acute speci- alities. Portsmouth is a thriving naval city, steeped in history, on the South Coast. It is ninety minutes from central London and has good transport links, including regular ferries to France and Spain. The major airports are easily accessible. It has some of the best water sport facilities in Europe and sandy beaches are within easy reach. Developments within the city itself and on the Gos- port side of the harbour suggest a vibrant future for the area. Inland from the hospital is the beautiful and relatively unspoilt countryside of rural Hampshire. Close by is the New Forest and the recently designated National Park of the South Downs. The area combines the advantages of city life with pleasant villages and seaside towns. There are a number of first rate schools both in the state and private sector and it is an excellent place to raise a family. The Maxillofacial Unit The specialties of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Surgery, Orthodontics and Restorative Den- tistry are managed as a single unit within the Head and Neck clinical service group. The General Manager and Chief of Service jointly manage the budget and are responsible for the day-to-day running of the department. The Clinical Director of the Maxillofacial unit is Mr Stephen Robin- son. The service also benefits for a dedicated Operational Manager, Michelle Hewlett. Regular joint clinics are held within the department including weekly Orthognathic Surgery and Head & Neck oncology clinics, Monthly Joint Restorative clinic, Facial Pain Clinic with the Anaes- thetic Department and Dentoalveolar Surgery Clinic. The Maxillofacial department is also responsible for a visited service to the Isle of Wight for or- thodontics & OFMS specialist clinics with day surgery operating lists in surgical dermatology, Head and Neck malignancy and dento-alveolar surgery. Wessex Deanery The Wessex Deanery covers a geographical area from Basingstoke in North Hampshire to Dor- chester in West Dorset and the Isle of Wight to the South. The Wessex Deanery serves a popula- tion of around 2.8 million people. HTVW provides training programmes within Dorset and South Wiltshire under a formal agreement with the South West Strategic Health Authority. The Wes- sex Deanery is responsible for the training of some 2,500 trainees. - 2 - Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust is a provider of Acute Health Services under contract to a range of Purchasers in the area of the Hampshire basin and Western South Downs. The Trust is the lead body for the local Research and Development Support Unit and has close links with the University of Portsmouth and its new School of Postgraduate Medicine for both education and research. University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust (UHBristol) Situated in the heart of Bristol, UH Bristol is a large city centre Teaching Trust employing over 7000 staff, with annual revenue of nearly £400 million and with a total of 1156 beds throughout the Trust. We are one of the largest employers in Bristol and provide a wide range of in-patient, out-patient and day-care services to the local population within Bristol, as well as being the big- gest specialist referral centre for the South West England. University of Bristol Dental Hospital Bristol Dental Hospital and School is a major specialist centre in the South West Region. The Dental Hospital has approximately 70,000 patient attendances per annum and has an excellent national and international reputation for patient care, scholarship and research. Academics - 3 - work in close association with NHS colleagues and share joint management procedures. The Dental Hospital site is adjacent to the Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI), a major tertiary referral centre, where all investigative, medical and surgical facilities are present within the complex. There is a designated Children’s Hospital within the Bristol Royal Infirmary complex. 2013 saw the centralisation of the Head and Neck services to UB Bristol. Within BDH, this included oral and maxilla facial surgery and orthodontics. The South West Cleft services transferred to the dental hospital in the summer 2014. The Maxillofacial Unit (Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth)) The specialties of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Surgery, Orthodontics and Restorative Den- tistry are managed as a single unit within the Head and Neck clinical service group. The other departments within the Head and Neck clinical service group are ENT, Ophthalmology, Audiology and Audio Vestibular Medicine. The Maxillofacial de- partment is also responsible for a visited service to the Isle of Wight where specialist clinics and day surgery operating lists in Surgical dermatology, Head and Neck malignancy and dentoalveo- lar surgery are carried out Regular joint clinics are held within the department including weekly Orthognathic clinics and Head & Neck oncology clinics, Monthly Joint Restorative / OMFS clinics, Joint Orthodontic/ Den- toalveolar clinics, Facial Pain Clinics with the Anaesthetic Department and Joint Cleft Lip and Palate Clinics. Queen Alexandra Hospital has an excellent Education Centre. The department has a range of appropriate outpatient facilities: Orthodontics
